LETS GO TO A FUNERAL! Devin Townsend Project "Funeral" 

To give some context to this song, it was written when Devin was a teenager. It's about Jesse, who was the brother of one Devin's closest friends. Jesse was stabbed to death because his attackers, a group of kids, wanted the hat he was wearing. Jesse's family asked Devin to speak at his funeral and this song came out of that experience. He still sometimes struggles to perform this song- during the Ocean Machine livestream in 2021, Devin got choked up and had to step away from the mic for a minute. The line "and I'm left behind with nothing but words" gets me every damn time. If you feel like really getting gut-punched by this song, listen to one of the acoustic covers Devin has done of it. Just Devin, his guitar, and a boatload of Feels.

This song is amazing, and it means so much to Dev - he broke down singing it on stage before, it's very personal to him - if you look up his Pandemic version of "Ocean Machine in its entirety" you see him almost break down too. It was a live stream and I remember everyone in the chat trying to comfort Dev, Cooper the emotional support dog came to the rescue and we all love him for it. He also has an acoustic version of this, very pulled back and awesome in its own right.

I loved this, and I seem to love all his music. Just a great blend of peaceful and rocking out. His voice and signing style just hits you were you live.

Funeral is both beautiful and has an anger to it that fits. The wall of sound Devin creates is something to behold, often simple but overwhelming, it drives the feelings of the song forwards. Devin is very very special he has both power and fragility in his performances that means they are no longer songs but experience, they hit all of your emotions sometimes all at once. Love Devin. It is indeed a rabbit hole. This trilogy tells an awful lot about Devin. And it was written when he was a very young man. Since then, he has explored many genres. From atmospheric to the most extreme metal. Just epic.

All 3 songs are very personal to Devin (whole Ocean Machine album is personal for him). This song was written after unnecessary death of his school mate (friend) - he was stabbed in robbery attack. He sing with passion at beginning because death of young human isn't thing that should happen and soft later because (as you said) funeral is personal thing. This song is emotional rollercoster. Thank you for your reaction. It was great, as always.

You can't react to a Devin song without an appreciative comment from me. Super cool that so many people know the story behind this and the trilogy. Devin posted a 2+ hour long interview he did with Steve Vai this morning. A Sex and Religion reunion would be bucket list stuff for the ages...

2/3 of the Holy trinity done. Bastard has the fattest riff and Dev painting a picture with his voice. The high, sustained notes will knock your socks off His diaphram breath control is amazing. When he puts his arms out to his side and pulls them back , pushing more air and staying on pitch much longer. My next Patreon request will be more modern Dev. Too many sides of his genre to count.

Yes I agree, when Devin sings like that he almost puts you in a spell. That soft side is so good, then he will hit you with a primal scream lol. I did not know the background of this song, nor that they were a trio. i did know that i liked all 3 and listened to them together. Musically Bastard is my favorite, but all 3 are great. I'll have to dig more into the lyrics when i have the chance. ❤ and ✌️

I noticed the same thing with the last Devin song you did, it also had the same beat through the whole song while everything else kept changing. Very effective and kinda puts you in a trance.
