In this video I show you how I made a simple DIY JIG or guide for letter punches that allow stamping uniform and adjustable spacing between letters out of some metal scrap
The end result is quite good from what I was expecting!
The support works thanks to "2 needle sights": the mobile sight is used to give the pitch to the punch and therefore the distance between the letters/numbers, the second fixed sight is used to align the base of the punches when punching on a large surface (in which there is obviously a line where to punch)
I admire the punching of mechanical and non-mechanical pieces, it allows you to identify a detail but also place it in history, for example when the piece contains a construction date and not just a code.
At a time when lasers, CNC milling machines and automatic punching machines are the norm in many companies, I decided to build a simple manual punching stand.
However, it is also able to punch a round detail with moderate precision thanks to the V-shaped support which is rotated for the occasion, such as a rod or a simple steel bar, thus making the support useful for punching a plate on a flat surface or a round bar.
Hope you enjoy the video,
Alberto.
