Keith Richards in the 1970's was his inspiration for that character, and his good friend for many years. Heard they don't speak much anymore but Depp basically became Keith after he played Jack Sparrow (who was essentially just Keith Richards in the 70's with the way he walked, talked, acted, etc - which depp admitted is where he got the inspiration for the character) Him living with Hunter (keith's good friend as well) may have had something to do with the drug intake as well. Keith has been sober except for weed since 2006, he's been off Heroin since 1977 (minus a couple short relapses here and there). Stopped Coke in '06 when he fell out of the tree in Fiji and had to have brain surgery and was told it would kill him if he snorted anything ever again. Stopped drinking daily in 2018. Depp however started around the time the Pirates films came about and hasn't stopped lol. Some interviews he looks to be on heroin, and others; coke. Which Amber Heard claimed and provided pictures of in court about a month ago.
Many Actors & others don't watch their work on the Movie sets! Somewhat, I don't blame them! It would be like trying to improve an already proven style! Why watch your work, then ruin it trying to better the act! Seriously!

What kind of man he is? Did you see the video of him storming around hitting everything in his kitchen? No matter what she did, his behaviour was abusive too. Every time he is asked what might be in a video he looks guilty and scared of what they might show him doing. This is not an innocent, sweet, adorable man, as many people are suggesting here. And yes he is arrogant to deny everything when there is evidence of his behaviour, and thing he can get away with it. He bought an island so that like many other rich men, he would not be prosecuted for what he does there.

JD once explained why he doesn't know what's going on for these interviews. He doesn't watch his movies specifically because if he sees his performance and hates something he'll subconsciously change it in the next performance and given he's been so successful it's best he never do that. Being we are all our own worst critics and the fans/audience are the ones he believes opinions truly matter. They like how he does things so he didn't want to change them.

Johnny is a very sensitive man. He has a little boy charm and is very funny and entertaining. Letterman loved having Depp on his show and did often. Overuse of drugs never made people's lives better. Johnny is well spoken when he needs to be. He is intelligent about some things and mad poor choices with other things. I hope he can straighten out his life and make better choices. He is so talented.

And you can tell because in the later interview clips, Dave asks the question and you can tell he’s already primed to laugh at the answer he knows he’s gonna get. And it is damn funny, each time.

Sure none of us are perfect, sure he has battled drug and alcohol so have thousands of people all over the world. A jury of their "peers" because let's be honest they can't really have a jury of thier actual peers, said they didn't believe her. And there are literally hours worth of recordings out there of them interacting together that weren't submittal in court because the person on the recording has passed or maybe because of the laws where the recording took place who knows. Many of those people including JD had no idea they were being recorded. My original statement still stands. I still believe he is brilliant and fantastic. I'm not alone and I wouldn't care if I was.
