Letting the Bad Habits Back In After RNY/Gastric Bypass Weight Loss Surgery

Nicole is Losing It

All it took was getting in the mindset of "treating myself" during a 3-week vacation to derail 18 months of good habit building after my gastric bypass surgery. It's a slippery slope! I'm sharing this all with you in the hopes that it will serve as motivation for others to avoid my missteps, as well as motivation for ME to get back on track.

As a binge eater, don’t make yourself feel guilty because it just leads to more binging. When I break a binge cycle, I make one rule for myself and then I can slowly walk it back. For now, my goal is to track before I put something in my mouth. I’m not telling myself no yet, I’m just going to track. Then I can get a good image of what I’m consuming and make an informed choice instead of a choice from my feelings. I can’t tell you how much I really appreciate you sharing this.

Hi Nicole. We haven't heard anything since this video but I hope you are doing well. I'm a new subscriber but I have been browsing every one of your videos. Lots of honest info and experiences. Thank you for that. I had my RNY July 1st 2024. I have been worried about you after this post so please update. We are only human and still must live life. So keep your head up.

Dear Nicole, the binging part is what you should address first. What is your last thought before you reach out to binge? Maybe, the thought of being away for 1 year scares you? Deep down inside it might be more than you think you can handle? Food for peple like us, very often is an escape mechanism. I don´t drink coffee or alcahol. For me, there is only food when I want to escape an situation. We all know, there is no escape. Feel your feelings, acknowledge them and get through them. And most importantly: Be kind to yourself. You can always get back on track. Getting back on track is just one thought away. Committ to it. Wishing you all the best.

You need to give yourself a little grace. You are embarking on an adventure you've dreamed of for years, but it's one thing to dream about it, a whole other thing to actually see it happening. It's scary to do everything you are doing! It's also much easier to maintain habits when you're in a stable environment than it is to do when you can't control what's around you and you're in unfamiliar places. You can do this. Instead of shaming yourself, turn it around and look at it as a challenge. You've overcome so much already. You just now have to figure out how to merge all your good habits with your new world. Don't worry about what's happening next week or next month, worry about the next hour. If you focus on what you need to do right now, today, the sliding backwards and regain won't be an issue. I know they sell protein in Vegas, go find some!

Hey there! We are both 18 months post-op and I have so enjoyed watching you journey as my own unfolded. I am a traveller too- I have been to 12 countries since my surgery. I am always so glad to get home back to my routine and where I feel in control. I get it. Thanks so much for sharing this.

This is where I am 10 months in….its scary! I had a surgery on my foot and stopped exercising. Also starting to eat junk again! 😂😂😂 Lost 85 lbs and recently gained a few back. I feel out of control but this video helps. I think that being out of a routine makes you prone to fall back into bad habits. Reaching out to the Bariatric team and accepting accountability are steps in the right direction. Holding onto the shame just makes it worse. I’ll follow your example and do the same thing. Will both be on track soon!!!

Thank you for being vulnerable and sharing this. I am about 6 months out from RNY and have struggled to resist binging and falling into bad habits. I traveled to Australia for 2 weeks and went completely off the rails so I can absolutely relate to making poor choices eating when traveling. I think what helped me get back on track was asking myself what part of the trip I will remember most in 10 years and the food did not make the list. So I know it’s not worth it to throw away all my progress for a fleeting dopamine rush. I also try to think before I eat something out of the norm “does this help me be happier in my life or not”. Good luck, you can do it!

I wonder how you have been caring for your mental health? If you aren’t seeing a therapist I would highly recommend it. It’s taken me several years of trust building with my therapist but she is helping me to get to the bottom of why I binge. Now I’m able to stop and sit with cravings and not kick myself whenever I slip. Sending you lots of love and grace.

don't worry. its fine. you'll get back to your healthy life in no time. one trick that works for me if I crave sweets: I get out of the house and walk. just walk. if its late I walk at home, sometime with weights. you can go to the hotel gym or walk up and down the hotel corridor if it doesn't feel safe walking outside in the middle of the night. just walk. you know all the right choices and you'll be back on track in an instant. wish you a great time, wherever you are right now. 🌟

This is so valuable for you to share! I felt like I was starting to fall back into my old habits slowly but surely and I’m really truly very worried. I’m only a few months out! For me, my trigger point was caffeine and it’s made me crave carbs and sugars. I’m so happy that I’m not alone. ❤

Nicole, you’re an amazing person. Gaining the weight back and becoming unhealthy is a real fear of mine. Every time I seem to slip, I have to remind myself why I had the surgery in the first place. Good for you for being so vulnerable. That’s really hard. Admitting that you’re struggling is the first step towards improvement though! What if you started doing mini food vlogs for each city you go to? Research the local hot spots (Yelp is great for that) and by looking at their menus ahead of time you can game plan going in. Then your content creation is driving the good habits? I can see the episodes being called something like “The Bariatric Traveller: Vegas!” It would also really be helpful for those of us who are also travel bugs because we’d know where to go! Hang in there, no one is perfect, and give yourself some grace. You’ve overcome these habits before, you can do it again. ❤

Thanks for making this video. This is on my mind 24/7 too. I am four months post op and I have been exploring many keto sweets and I am scared to go back to old habits. Eating fast is another one for me. And sometimes I get sick of planing meals and think why can’t I be a normal person who can eat and drink whenever they want. But …. Need to remind ourselves we are here because we wanted to change so hang in there please. Watch your older videos look at your old pictures and remember how good it felt being on this new journey. Nicole, the most important part of you is that you are a knowledgeing & admitting this habit. It certainly is easy to fall back into. Now, you need to write what you were feeling & thinking at the time you were purchasing these habits. Why? Remember, we are not perfect. Now, you can move forward knowing that you can correct it. Maybe you could form a habit of taking a walk every time you think you need an old habit. I hope this makes sense. I find you to be inspirational. I just had a gastric bypass last week. You have answered many questions I have thought about & I appreciate you being honest.

It’s not a fail, it’s an opportunity to reevaluate the why’s and the how’s and make a plan. Thank you, thank you for making this series!!! I appreciate your insight, Nicole. I started following you to learn more because a) my 72 year old sister was going to have this surgery and b) my niece really should consider this surgery. Your discussions on nutrition and care post-surgery have been very helpful. Sadly, my sister died 5 months after her surgery. She was NOT following protocol. She was not mentally prepared for the journey. She continued with her old habits. We are heartbroken, but not surprised. No autopsy was performed. Was it her lack of proper care post-surgery? Her heart? Her extreme blood-sugar drops after surgery? We will never know.

It sounds like you do really need some support from your bariatric team, you told youtube your story now just tell them what you told us or send them the video. I can understand the fear, I was a binge eater as well and mine has stopped also and I would feel bad if it started again, but your mind is probably saying "I am taking these trips, this year off," and that means F schedules and I'm having fun with everything - eating too...no boundaries! I can understand that. I am only 4 mos post op and my birthday is coming up this month and I want to eat pizza and cake and have a good ol' diet Mountain Dew, which was the soda I preferred before - all of that. Would love it! But my life has changed now and I won't be taking more than a bite of things people around me will be enjoying fully on my birthday! It stinks I know. I would love to turn loose! You wish you could let go and have fun with food while you are having fun with your trip. (like most people do) I would too. But our lives have changed. I actually feel like It's more of a chore to eat now than fun to eat like it used to be, I don't always enjoy it really anymore like I used to, but that's my opinion. But I'm loving the result and my life now. So I hope things will go well and you can get back on a schedule with your food and have fun in other ways. There's still a lot of fun to be had right?

I have an obesity dr and after my surgery on Jan. 8 2024, it took only 12 wks for binging to rear its ugly head! I went back on the meds for BED (Naltrexone & Wellbutrin in canada) and it keeps me sane! I recognize the pain of being out of control! Use your team - BED is a symptom - get treatment instead of the cycle of judging yourself- trying harder. I hope you post an update again soon. Day by day!

You have been so helpful to me so I hope this comes off as encouraging. Habits are context dependent. You are now in a context where your old habits are familiar, and your new habits probably feel out of place. They’re like the new kids at school and don’t know how they fit in. This year of travel can be good practice for your lifelong good habits as you find ways for these new habits to fit in contexts that are new to them. You can do this!

Thank you for sharing and being so honest and real, I love your videos! I can relate to binge eating since it is something I struggle with. Picture me at the drive through ordering enough food for a family of 3 plus a kids meal so that the employee would hopefully assume I was grabbing food for the family that I do not have and save me some embarrassment about the food being just for me...I try to just not buy snacks at the grocery store so I don't have them at home to tempt me, but it realistically turns into me running to the gas station and paying double the amount for less than if I had bought it at the grocery store. This video helped me want to kick things back into gear, realizing I'm not treating myself well! Excited to see the rest of your travels and adventure (:

I would throw all the junk food away and jump right into a healthy routine again, especially if you are dumping all the time. Don't be mad or disappointed in yourself over the choices you made over the past few weeks...it happens, especially when you are away from home traveling and not in your normal routine. Today is a new day! :)

Hi Nicole, I've been watching your journey, and so impressed and proud of your progress, and still proud in your honesty and vulnerability. It's so hard to eat well when you're not in your own space. But you can do it - I like the tracking idea. Can you track food quickly, even just a text/whatsapp to yourself, or something easy like that? Good luck! You can do this! Please give us an update when you feel ready - it's so heartwarming to see you fulfilling a lifelong dream!

Hi Nicole, you have come so far and you have so much self awareness that you are not even close to down fall. It's been 3 weeks of vacation, now get back on it as best you can. But remember to be kind to yourself and don't punish yourself mentally. It will be tough without routine but you got this! Can't wait for your next video, I'm sure you will be smashing it, and will provide us with your tips for staying on track whilst travelling 😊

One thing you have to understand. Thin people go on holiday and put on weight as well. You haven’t done anything wrong letting yourself have a break. The only difference is that they recognise that they’ve put on weight and make the effort to lose it again. You’ve already recognised this, so your mindset to food and weight is already a lot better than it was before. Don’t feel guilty, you’ve enjoyed yourself. Just draw a line and get back to normal with your fitness and nutrition

I’ll be one year post op next month and I’m already slipping back into old habits it’s horrible and makes me so scared. I’m disappointed in myself and glad I’m not the only one. I never got over eating fast though even in the early months of surgery I ate quickly it’s a really hard habit to break

Although I agree with everyone that you are on a trip of a life time that most cant or arent brave enough to go on, so in that regard I think you give yourself some Grace and say you had your fun and now get back down to some sort of organized assemblance of eating healthy. You DO have to realize, though, that you are now in maintenance and not in a weight loss journey, so you are naturally going to eat more of everything. I do understand that you are eating too much sugar and carbs and you will have to cut back on those but I dont think you always have to say "no" if you can do it without dumping. Now, as far as the binging goes. You kind of just skimmed right over that and I believe that the binge eating and the disordered eating is probably your biggest issue. Its mental first and physical second. You are a nurse so you know you need therapy for it. Its like an infection. You will never get better without the medicine; And you will never overcome binge eating (and its causes) until you medically and physically have it treated. The great news is that you can now set up therapy appointments online and attend via online appointment. Would you believe that in the 14 months since my RNY I have only been seen in person at my weight loss clinic (except for the actually surgery) one time ??? Ive had dietician apts every 3 months, I had some PT apt, all of my presurgical apts (there were a lot and it took 19 months I think to get it all done) 3 physiological apts and 4 Doctor apts. So in this day and age you have absolutely NO reason or excuse not to set up an appointment with a good eating disorder clinic psychologist. Good luck to you Nicole and enjoy your trip! Stay in touch with us though, please!!!

You can regain control! Maybe try to regain 10% of control everyday for 10 days? Go 0 to 100% on track overnight is too extreme for me. I need to do it slowly but surely. I feel for you and I hope you can continue to make videos about your experience, so people can know they are not alone. I had gastric sleeve 6 months ago and I’m now at a healthy BMI but I still wanna lose weight… I’m going back to ED… restricting type. I contacted an organization that will help me to not go right into anorexia. I hope you can reaching help, online or by phone. I’m sorry, my English is not good, im a French Canadian, but if you need to vent , I am here for you ❤

Hey Nicole Please don't get down on yourself. People that have always been skinny indulge on vacations/cruises especially. But your routine is gone that you had for the first year and a half. You need to map out your new plans. Maybe try my fitness pal so you make yourself accountable. Have a protein shake to get your protein up and set your calorie limit. If you start getting over the limit, you are done. Also drinking your calories you know is the worst. I know our bodies try very hard to Tell us when we are screwing up. I'm 3 weeks out from getting my gallbladder removed and have gained 4 pounds (when I was only 2 pounds from my 1st goal) I actually didn't know why we weren't supposed to drink with our meals and I do have a sip with food all the time because I like a refreshed mouth. I've also never fully cut sugar out. So I 💯 can relate to your mental battle but as long as it's in small quantities you might be ok. But you're better off without it. You are correct when you say it's not treating yourself. It's more of a punishment. You can do it!! Don't get down but come up with a new routine the other one is back home. Xo

Nicole, do you think you may be bingeing because you are lonely? Are you traveling alone? You were doing so well after surgery, and now I'm becoming so worried about you. Remember, you can change your plan to travel for a year if it isn't working for you.

It takes a lot of courage to take a year off and pursue your passions! You are out of your pattern, so eating and preparing meals can become more difficult! Allow yourself some grace and self compassion, you’ve got this! How are the vitamin patches working for you?

Hello Nicole, I have been in Overeaters Anonymous for a few years now. I did have RNY surgery Dec 18th 2023 as another tool. I am still attending meetings and have a sponsor and sponsees as I need this program. I am a compulsive eater. That's why I was so heavy. This program might help you as well. But you will need to try for yourself. One of the keys is beginning today. And only staying abstinent for today. I know you can do this but I can not do it on my own. maybe you might need some help too.

All right this is like an alcoholic or a drug addict that they're addicts. If they're addicts you don't have the choice of eating or drinking or doing what you're addicted to because you will spiral out of control so some people can do it because they can do it there's no problems with that doing it if they have controller is not a problem for them but for addicts or people that have no control on their intake or how much they eat Yes you have to stop that immediately and not do it again.

Work on finding some people to support you in person. When you need it, therapy is a good thing. Most of us have food issues that need to be dealt with. Use your team for sure. Also, a vacation is only a few days. It’s what we do most of the time that determines how we do long term. Obesity is a lifelong effort. Know that most gain 5-20 lbs back and it does NOT mean that you will gain it all back. I am 18 years out post op RNY.

You're feeling like crap because you're eating crap food. If you could find quality nutrition, you'd start to feel better. Having said that, I fully understand the downward spiral of junk food. It's a battle, but acknowledging it is a start, and you've done that. You could keep a food journal for a while and that should help focus. Sigh, I'll probably experience this battle at some point in my journey as well.
