Hey Steve, Extended chords have always slightly confused me. From the theory I've read the 9th doesn't necessarily have to be from the second octave. The fact that there is a 7th included is what turns the 2nd into a 9th. An add9 chord however has no 7th so the 2nd from the second octave is identified as 9. How practical it would be to play a 2nd from the first octave on guitar I'm not sure unless we were to play in some kind of open tuning as the root and second would normally be on the same string. As I say it confuses me. I guess it would be entirely different on a keyboard. What would be your take on it? BTW a bit of constructive critism if it's ok? I'd record the audio separately. The camera audio isn't great, it's more work editing but the results are worth the effort. Only saying 'cos I've faced the same issues and I reckon you'll get more viewers if the sound quality is better. Enjoying the videos and will keep watching. Music theory fascinates me :)

I have an external cam mic, but a Rebel t6 doesn't take them... in any fashion. So, yeah, I need to capture audio differently. Also need better lighting. On to the theory. My understanding has always been that if the 2nd is on the same octave, it is a sus2 chord. However, in the case of what we are discussing, we have a 3rd, 7th, and a 9th. And the way the typical chord shapes are laid out, you don't have the 5th. It is implied, the 1, 3, 7, and 9 are present, therefore setting it up in a way the 9th isn't on the same octave. I may do a companion video to help clear it up shortly, as there are 2 other 9th chords to discuss. Thanks for watching, and thanks for the feedback!

@@SteveReaves Yeah its an odd one that affects string players more than other musicians I think. On a keyboard you could play root, 2nd and 3rd all from the same octave. That isn't really possible on guitar in standard tuning. I thought it would only be a sus2 if the 2nd has replaced the 3rd though, rather than it being from the same octave. It hurts my head. :D On the gear front. Check out a couple of vids on my channel and if you like what you see / hear, I'd be happy to to help you out with a bit of guidance and maybe even sort out a wee colab at some point if you like.
