The mind is an extremely complex system! How can we ever hope to understand something so irreducibly complex? Vision neuroscientist David Marr had a big idea - we can understand complex systems like the mind by analyzing it at three distinct levels!
0:00 - Complex systems
4:16 - David Marr and the levels of analysis
13:33 - Computational level
15:29 - Algorithmic level
17:53 - Implementational level
18:51 - Relationship between levels
21:51 - Example: cash register
24:45 - Trade-offs
28:22 - Wrapping up
29:28 - Key concepts

Insane this video has the view count it does. I looked thinking it was in the millions. This is so professionally done, and excellently scripted I'm shocked tbh. Hope this channel gets the viewship it deserves one day

Agreed! But The problem isn’t necessarily the RU-vid algorithm, but rather the relatively small population size of the prospective audience. Aside from a few curious autodidacts out there, the potential audience is limited to a small portion of upper class undergraduates enrolled in a cognitive psychology course that actually care enough to supplement class lectures and textbook readings. 4.5 k views is actually pretty impressive considering!

You are doing much better job than cognitive science lecturers at my university in Poland. Thank you very much for your brilliant work!

Great explanation. Simplified whilst retaining the essence. Thank you. I somewhat see the link between David Marr’s idea of explaining complex system to Anderson’s ACT-R model which attempts to connect the structure of the brain and the function of the mind via cognitive architecture (level of abstraction). Hope my view is accurate.

Yes, ACT-R is a great example of an attempt to bridge the gaps between these levels!

How is it possible to produce complex behavior using only limited representation? How does this relate to Marr’s level of representation and algorithm?
