these are the attacks and runic attacks in God of War 2018 and God of War Ragnarok 2022 the ones that aren't in both games im just showing so you can see the difference #godofwarragnarok #godofwar #kratos

I'd say, the axe felt and sounded heavy in 2018. From recalling the axe, feeling your controller vibrate as Kratos palms it, to the heavy sound it makes when it arrives in Kratos' hand, it feels heavy. Even when it spins on its own when you hold R1, you can hear how heavy it sounds. In Ragnarok, it sounds and feels light. It doesn't feel like that heavy duty axe in 2018. I preferred the 2018 axe sounds and graphics. The ice was bright blue, distinct from the environment. The ice from the axe in Ragnarok seems to follow a warmer tone, which sometimes doesn't contrast with the environment, rather it blends in and one can seldom tell that he's deployed some ice attack.
I thought I was crazy but this makes sense to me now. When I first started playing ragnarok I thought something felt different about the axe. It just feels like a cheap little toy, feeling the weight as you swing it around played a large part in why the axe felt so good to play with in 2018. This might seem little or an insignificant part of game design but it really does impact gameplay and how much fun it is.
I played ragnarok then went back to play 2018. I had a problem fighting enemies on 2018 cause i got use to ragnarok not blocking enemies with effects. But when i replay 2018, the view is getting blocked by too much effects
@@matthewnoud6938 Plus the sound effects are (way) worse, some attacks lack the same impact also due to lack of camera shake. The blades are especially bad in this case. 2018 all the way.
Some of these moves are now belong to the Spear. God of War 2018 was more raw power. Ragnarok focus on utility and versatile which mean you can go crazier with different combos this time.
@@jiren6346 They made it so that runic attacks deal less damage so that fights could be more balanced instead of spamming runic attacks. Still feels like a bad decision cuz it takes away from the hack and slash gameplay all the other games had.
The recall sound is different too. It becomes more and more metallic as you upgrade the axe in GoW 2018. At the beginning it's more like a "Shhpop" and "Shhkunk" at the end giving to the axe the impression that is way heavier.
for a story-related reason, i think it’s because of fimbulwinter. mimir mentioned that it makes everything weaker and can even change things’ properties and powers.
@@madeofcastiron it’s definitely not a story design choice. It would be an embarrassing decision to make the combat feel less impactful and weighty to loosely drive home the fact that thimbulwinter is here
@@ShikiRyougi05 in a game about God's and giants and magic, cool sfx is "too crazy for you" of everything about these games... thats where you draw the line... no ur coping and making an excuse for the devs so that you can pretend that ragnarok wasn't disappointing on almost every godamn level when compared to GOW 2,3, and 4.
i think it's worth mentioning that the Returning Whirlwind no longer is activated with L2-R1, and is now activated with L1(shield)-R1, along with Returning Storm. IMO this is a horrible decision since now you can accidentally fire off runics when doing fast combos with Rw or Rs. If they moved the input to L1 because they wanted to replace it with something else id get it. But it just seems like needless change that's just another backstep from 2018. i defiantly wouldn't say they work the exact same.
Totally agree with you. I found it to be the most annoying change. Like you said, it was unnecessary and punishes our muscle memory from the previous game, and just makes accidental runic attack activation.
Also, returning storm is the same mechanically, but returning whirlwind has a second followup if you press R1 again. So it's not the same, it's improved in that way
1:06 I really prefer ragnaröks here despite less effects. The reason is because in 2018 it literally looks like water, meanwhile in ragnarök it actually looks like ice
If Fimbulwinter really drains all magic, then why are concentrated pockets of magic running around as Wraiths and Elementals trying to kill us? Just something I felt was weird
The magic is draining out of everywhere and manifests as these things. Freya talks about how the magic leaking from the gods (same reason Kratos’ weapons decay) has to go somewhere.
@@eaglefangkaratedojo7473 Thanks. I platinum the game a few weeks ago but I think we all know theres no way in hell I remembered every detail or convo. WE NEED THAT NEW GAME PLUS BROTHER
In terms of combat, I liked GoW 2018 more than Ragnarok. Especially when it comes to hand-to-hand combat, the lack of a skill tree for it in Ragnarok is disappointing. You have the Lunda Armor set that focuses on hand-to-hand combat yet there's barely any moves for it.
You don’t have the spear in 2018, 2018 is the reduced version of ragnarok when it comes to combat and let’s not forget the addition of verticality as well the charges you can do to all 3 weapons.
@@smarty1268 @Smarty sure but there aren't any long combos anymore, you have no need to change from one weapon to another unless the enemy has an elemental barrier. Bare-handed combat complemented axe combat so well. As for the spear, it is just another weapon that does the same job as the axe or even worse in many cases.
Yeah that's the one thing that sucks about the combat in this game, you have to equip a specific shield and use certain button inputs to make bare handed look somewhat good and enjoyable. Really hope they add more to the combat for ng+
Effects and moves feels like improvement because you aren't blinded by the frost particle effect anymore, but the sound effect change make the axe feels really light and weak. The same problem with blade of chaos, there is no "OOMPH!!!" behind this supposedly heavy attacks.
I cant be the only one that felt that the Axe felt a lot stronger in 2018 than it does in ragnarok i dont know if it is because 2018 had more ice and particle effects while using it
All the effects for both the Axe and Blades seems heavier in 2018 yeah, they are more swift now, kinda indicating that Kratos has mastered them and oh, Fimbulwinter drains magic lol
That's just an excuse for the watering down of the strength and power that Kratos displayed in the GoW2018. I feel faster in the sequal for sure, but at times I really do feel like the heavy attacks and runic are less powerful, which detracts from the immersion. When I slam my axe on the ground in 2018, it's like an iceburg coming from the ground, whereas Ragnarok looks like a bunch of weak snow crysals, and it doesn't have a powerful AOE look to it.
I wouldn’t say ragnarok’s effects are worse than 2018’s. It’s personal preference really. Ragnarok has more emphasis on the actual element the weapons are using. Yeah the attacks in 2018 felt bigger and more powerful, but thats bc they were all just huge over the top streams and particles that were colored to resemble ice or fire.
ye but some like the rage of sparta is definitely better looks wise but for weapons it's is simply different since the charge up for the blades of chaos sends shockwaves this time
Man, I really miss my Glaive Storm in Ragnarök! Ngl as much as I love this game, it kinda sucks having 4 less Runic options for both the axe and the blades compared to 2018
Am I the only one who likes the lessen particles from attacks? Like I like to see the weapon in action whilst having a decent amount of contrail, too much effects kinda looks too plastic-y in ways, plus the attacks actually looks accurate to the elements that the weapons are portraying. I actually prefer ragnarok's combat overall, I love 2018's combat but I think this is a massive improvement from 2018.
The running R2 and the L2+R2 in 2018 i miss so much.. Shit was epic, now its severely toned down and someone mentioned the ice isn't as sharp either.. Like the color of it isn't noticeable like it was before
yeah but the the the grinding storm attack was OP. if you want to sorta do the grinding storm attack in ragnarok, you should do that switch stances attack
@@aleemizcool3654 facts, this is my least favorite change about this game. There were a lot of badass executions to be done when the enemies health was low enough and it gave more variety than just the stun bar kills
@@aleemizcool3654 My biggest gripe as well, other than too many Atreus missions haha. They also took away the changing stance moves from the blades which I always liked to use. Instead of changing this they should have added on top of it.
@@Kostas_Dikefalaios they changed the blades stance moves because they saw a RU-vid speed run of sigrun where the blades stance did 90% of the damage in like just 30 ish seconds. Something along those lines if I recall.
I think a lot of the comments are trying to say there is more impact and crunch in 2018 than in Ragnarok, which is definitely true. I don't have a huge problem with it, but I did notice that throughout my playthrough.
In GOW Ragnarok you don't feel the weight of the weapons. Leviathan axe felt like a toy. Also you can't directly call axe when using blades when hit 🔺 instead of calling axe it whips the blade. God of war 2018 gameplay was more fluid and fast.
The noise and visual effects of the 2018 axe is better. The sound of the "cracking" of the ice after the slam and the glow of the axe itself, in Ragnarok are lacking punch and feedback. Still pretty good though.
I like that they use less effects in GOW:R. Those effects sometimes blocks the view in GOW 2018. I expect to more easily see the enemies in front on Kratos in Ragnarok.
what is up with this weird justification here and in the comments, they used less effects cause there are more things on screen , stop simping like children unless you are on
I think that Ragnarök's moves and effects streamline the look of the game. And instead of blue glow effect for the axe, it's more actual ice and frost.
I think they toned down the effects a bit too much but I think what bothers me is the sound effects for the more powerful moves Wish they were a bit heavier I think they toned down the visual effects to make the game not as visually confusing to look at
Ngl, I fought the dlc statements, but there are a lot of things that feel too similar with a few upgrades I guess but even things like cinematic/powerful looking attacks are toned down, it really feels they added a few features but didn’t overhaul anything really
I think the reason for having less effects (visual/sound) is because the amount of things the game already have. Because having all the realms and much more items make the game massive. So, if they have the same visuals and sound. The game wouldn't be on ps4, GOW Ragnarok would have been the most demanding performing game on the console. The ps4 would overheat horribly
Now that I think about it, they should've went a similar direction to how Ghost of Tsushima handled wind effects and allowed a toggle between minimal and maximum particles, because some people like lots of flashy particles (like me) and others like the slimmed down look. Or even the sfx, which in my opinion was meatier in 2018 Everything is both an upgrade and a downgrade. Like for example, I love Skaldi's edge because the original precision throw lockon kinda felt like a waste of time when I could just combo throws AND get a headshot combo going, but in a runic attack with sick ass slo mo it feels much cleaner and usable mid combat. But taking out the original executioner feels downright wrong, like I want to CLEAVE people, there's already enough cutting going on. And leviathan's wake was just the sickest at sniping.
What I feel most lacking is that they removed the combo throwing move. Where if you hit the enemy in the head with light throw and time the return at the right time Kratos automatically throw it and you can do that until the enemy dies. It was so much satisfying. I felt like they lessen the effectiveness of the Axe thrown. Maybe to make the spear feel more attractive, having less overlap between the two. Also I expected a better integration of weapons. They should have built a combination of buttons to rapid cycle between weapons similar to God of War 3. This game requires your thumbs at the analog stick the entire time so you can be always on the move and controlling the camera, at least at higher difficulties. Taking your left thumb from the stick to switch weapon is really bad when you are surrounded by enemies. Especially because you can't obviously switch weapons mid a animation, it's have to finalize. So I need to send still for a moment until the switch is possible, remove my fingers from movement and into the digital directional. It would be more efficient if there was a shortcut, I don't know like L1+ O (I don't think this do anything) that made Kratos cycles to the next weapon already doing a attack to stanger a enemy. The other changes I'm fine with, like I prefer the more bombastic effects of the first game but I realize that one of the criticism over it was the combat was hard to read at a time. They focused so much in make it cinematic with minimalist hud that it affected playability. Most of the changes made were obviously to raise the spatial sense and readability of the combat and enemies and for the most part they succeeded. Let see what changes and balances they bring with new game plus.
For the throw combo you can use the fast frost awaken from an axe throw. Don’t get me wrong, it’s not as smooth by any means but when you can do is throw the axe, recall it and just keep holding triangle. When he catches it it will immediately go into frost awaken, then aim and hit r1. If you do it smoothly enough it’s very similar to the last game but it’s not as fast.
The stance change moves have 2 added differences that are cool that not many know about. If you hold the light attack button on the second attack the axe spins around kratos one more time. Also if you mix and match light and heavy attacks in gow 2018 you get a combo of 3 attacks. In ragnorok you can mix and match 5. Only found that out recently. That was awesome
Well they did me that the winter makes all magic and things weaker through drainage. So maybe it was toned down for that reason. Even tho I do agree its kinda a dumb decision to lessen Kratos even further
Yeah, it think the armor looked better in 2018 because 2018 really emphasized environmental reflections (which I miss), and it showed itself on the armor sets.
I feel like they did a few things better in 4 than 5, and I don’t like that they removed a few things and replaced some with less cool attacks and stuff.
Is it just me or does the effects of GOWR looks kinda worse and underwhelming than the GOW 2018, the Oomphing power💥 2018 delivers is just gone in Ragnarok 🙁 Still a great and masterpiece of a game but I just wished they retained the Oomph power effects but oh well 😔
in moveset & runic 1.skaodi's edge from hunter killer 2.vengeful sickle from tyr revenge in frost awaken mode 1.frost beach from fury of the ice troll 2.frozen ascent from thiazi talon 3.frozen lance from leviathan's wake 4.precision frost burst from frozen spike
2018 was so much better for combat(imo). still love ragnarok but really felt like a downgrade for the combat and armor/enchantment/talisman/skills system
Armor in ragnarok is way better, all bonuses are really usefull, bot usseles proc chance to something like in 2018, enchatments also done better in ragnarok, you don't need spend time and choose couple of goods from hundreds of usseles. Skills uogradeing with the usage also done great. I just don't inderstand one thing, why they cut barehanded combat, they even can give to player all barehanded moves from the start, and thats be fine, instead they just leave 4 atacks in barehanded mod....
I liked the old GOW games better because of the impact of the gameplay & sound design. Not to mention the camera was much better when it showed everything on the battlefield rather than having to 360 turn all the time. But that’s just a preference. The new games aren’t bad but aren’t as good. I’ll always remember GOW for its Greek Mythology games. It’s like comparing masterpieces vs knock offs that tried hard.
I gota say tho, the Axe sounds beefier in 2018 than ragnarok. Or was it because you were testing at the Spark of The World? I mean, different places has different filters with audio
man the fx is SOOO MUCH BETTER in 2018. If they reduce it for plot reasons (Kratos have more control of his rage), I say nah... gameplay is gameplay. Edit: or because of Fimbulwinter too apparently
One thing i liked about 2018 is that the effects only became more after you upgraded the axe and blades a certain time I think it especially looked nice while fighting enemies in the wildwoods near kratos house because the lighting there gave the Axe’s FX that really beautiful ice blue. Also i 100% agree with the other comments, that the heaviness are impact of 2018 combat misses in Ragnarok.
Actually nah. They toned down the effect in Ragnarok because it's too distracting or too overly saturated. That's why it seems more "thin" sometimes I couldn't even see the enemies because of all the particles. They essentially cleaned it up in the 2nd game
@@gman8796 they dont have to make the axe sounds lighter though. it is one thing to do it to the blades, they're meant that way, but the axe really sounds lighter than in 2018, which is weird cause it's supposed to be Mjolnir's good counterpart.
I just want to correct the glaive storm is the runic attack called leviathans roar in god of war 5. Storm of fimbulwinter is different and not similar to any runic attack in god of war 2018
Ragnarok is beautiful, but the 2018 version is more mysterious. In general, the previous part is much more beautiful in terms of story and drama. An example of this is Kratos' attempt to hide his past from his son and everyone, chasing Boulder and his return to his past to save his son, "the scene of the blades of chaos" and much, much more that remains in terms of story. And the plot is nicer.
