The rules state that it's the action not the consequence that determines the penalty. 10 seconds was an appropriate penalty. Unlike Max's brake check on Lewis. Which the rules state there should be severe repercussions in the next race and points on the driver's licence. Max got the two points but faced no repercussions that either affected his finishing position in Jeddah or starting position at YM. Just like after Monza Max was able to concurrently serve the 3 grid penalty and the engine penalty. So RBR were able to get a completely new engine and all the other bits and bobs and the grid penalty from Monza was eaten up. The FIA let that one slide. Red Bull were already behind so they said fuck it and pitted in hopes some bullshit would happen. So when bullshit happened, suddenly Verstappen is on brand new softs while Hamilton is on old hards. Of course Mercedes don't want to race at such a massive disadvantage in tires, the onboards alone show how much slower they were because of that. So the question is...why did Masi make a decision (that was not within the rules) that he knew would virtually guarantee the guy who had no chance of winning before the safety car, would in fact win?

No matter who you are a fan of, in all my 40 years of watching F1 this was possibly the most brutal way for someone to lose (apart from Hill and Schumacher) Max and Redbull had nothing to lose hence the stop, which meant Hamilton was a sitting duck. Masi wanted a race to the finish which I understand, but it was totally one sided. He handed the WDC to Max on a plate. It should have been a red flag, given Lewis the opportunity to even things up and then hard racing to the end. Both of them deserved the title, but unfortunately that title was heavily favoured in one direction by Masi. Nobody should be blaming Max or Redbull for the farce at the end, this is on the FIA

You can see, Mercedes already expected Max will be behind him and the marker will be released and that's the end of lap 55 where the track is just cleared. Nothing has been decided at that time yet, they totally bet on the race will end under the safety car but the marshalls clean the track very fast I must say. So If the steward handled the situation right, they should've released backmarkers right at the start of lap 56. It will cost about 1.5 laps for them to catch up and that will be at the end of lap 57 so we still can race in the last lap. People even say backmarkers didn't even need to catch up, they just need to be at a safe distance. All the controversy could be avoided with the correct choice by the stewards, Mercedes will still be mad but they can't say anything because they already expected it. In the end, it was bad luck for Lewis but he handled it like the champ he is.

The real question is, why did Masi delay the unlaping? When all of the teams were expecting it? My opinion is that he didn't want the title to be decided by a safety car. So he tried to keep a buffer of cars between Lewis and Max. But then he realised how utterly against protocol this would have been. That means that unless all of the cars have completely unlapped themselves in a quarter of a lap, that being the "end of lap 56", as per your own argument. which is impossible since the cars are driving SLOWER due to the safety car, then the backmarkers would still be unlapping themselves during lap 57. Massive praise for Bono for being so calm and collected throughout. I get the feeling that Lewis may well have won had Mercedes opted for the same aggressive strategy as Red Bull and the lapped cars between Lewis and Max being told to unlap themselves. I genuinely don't think Masi made the call maliciously to disadvantage Mercedes - finishing the race under the safety car would have been a tragic end to an epic season and at least we got the race, and championship, decided on track. However, both Wolff and Horner are as bad as each other trying to sway the decision of race direction in their favour and it's sad that this clouded Masi's judgement, who should have been able to be strong willed enough to make race calls on his own. Abu Dhabi wasn't the first time this had happened but I really hope it is the last. Had it not been a championship-deciding race it would have doubtlessly finished under the safety car. The best solution in my opinion would have been to red flag the race, that way everyone gets free choice of tyre, and we would have had an insane 3 lap scrap for the win with both cars on fresh softs with Hamilton leading. Or the lapped cars should have been sent to drive through the pit lane and the racing could have got underway perhaps a lap earlier, giving two laps of racing with the same advantage to Red Bull on tyres, but that's what happens when you take a gamble. And anyone who blames Latifi is a moron.

I disagree with you about the SC. LH dominated the whole race and every little details of this race (except Masi's one). Max on the other hand was nowhere close to LH masterclass, he had no chance to win this race, and was lost far behind. Fnishing under the SC would of been logical because LH shown he was the champion, he mastered the race as he should have done, he was the best out there. The question is why giving Max such an advantage? Why deciding to erase a driver work and his team's effort like that? Reporters said LH was crying after the race, but fans need to remember that LH is fighting for equal rights, social justice, and the promotion of opportunities for all in the world; of course it hurts when own discipline let you down and promote injustice decision. This something LH had to fight against since he is a child. In conclusion, Totto's reaction says it all, Masi "It is not right, it is not the right decision."

The whole controversy is being blown out of proportion by the (British) media. It is very clear from this full radio coms HAM and Merc knew they were in serious trouble the second the SC was called. FIA messed up twice, first by not allowing cars to un-lap themselves and wasting 4 laps and then randomly only allowing some cars to do it and not others. Shambolic and not up to the standards expected from a sport like F1, but had they bot wasted at least 1-2 laps doing nothing, Max would've still been right behind Lewis on the last lap with new tyres.

Well done for telling everyone you know nothing about strategy, without actually saying you know nothing about strategy. Merc calculated their strategy based on the regs. They knew that either there were going to be cars between Hamilton and Max, or that by the time the accident was cleared there was no time for the unlapped cars to unlap themselves and the safety car to do one more lap as per the regulations. If they pitted, then they would have come out behind Max and the backmarkers, and as per the regulations of the sport, they would have either finished the race behind Max and the safety car, gifting the title away, or they would have put Lewis in a position where he had to get passed several back markers and Max, again effectively handing the title to Max. What they couldn't account for is a race director making up and bending rules on the fly which would put them at a massive disadvantage, and give a ridiculously huge advantage to Red Bull and Max, all in the name of entertainment and to the detriment of the sport. Merc strategy was entirely correct, and they literally could not do anything different to give themselves a greater chance of winning a race they dominated. Which is why people are so annoyed at this, if Merc did everything right in the race and were comfortably leading the race, which they obviously did, then the race director making and breaking rules on the fly to lose them the race on the final lap is quite literally a fix. Intentional or not, a fix is a fix. How anyone can accept what happened as being fair and just, even if their favourite driver won, is insane. What we've effectively seen is a race be fixed for a dramatic showdown, which left one driver who had been dominating the race at a serious disadvantage. That isn't sport, which makes a mockery of the fact that F1 is meant to be the pinnacle of motor sport.
@luckyboy4766

@armbando1299
@armbando1299 2 года назад
Either way it wouldnt have been fair. Verstappen would have been behind Hamilton with fresher tires if he didnt pit. Would have punished Red Bull for being proactive if they didnt let lapped cars around. But it was unfair on Mercedes because they obviously took into consideration that the lapped cars would have to rejoin the pack before the start of the race. So they based their decisions on this. They should have cleared debris quicker. Or red flagged the race but this would have given Merc an advantage as Hamilton could have got fresh tires and kept track position. The safety car system needs an overhaul. It is not a fair system that a backmarker crash can effect the outcome of a race. Bunching the pack, deleting strategies, people pitting for free tyres ect. Not fair racing

Not a gamble the reality .... pit for tyres be behind verstappen and watch race end under safety car max in front....or don't pit for tyres have max behind after pitting on fresh rubber have some bulshit rules shenanigans where max can preassure lewis from safety car line with no risk to himself because P3 is still a few cars back. There is normally a risk reward to trying to overtake after safety car restart It's possible you can lose a place trying to gain one if field is compressed like it should have been. Max would have gone for it for sure but maybe carlos would have as well we will never know as the rule wasn't fully applied because if it had Lewis would have finished race first behind safety card not an exciting end to WC in masi's and his bosses eyes. @@hotshotjansson They state quite clearly that the SC shall pit the lap following when lapped cars are allowed to un-lap themselves, not on the same lap. My point is there have been a lot of situations where the rules are inadequate so a decision has to be made up, which is why we hear so many calls to Masi by team managers. The actions of race director & stewards should be predictable because they should just be enforcing the rules. If they have to make decisions not properly covered then the rules are not good enough & need to be revised. The time to revise them is between seasons.
