Marc We absolutely loved this. When Micheal was so dominant people were just fed up and wanted another result. Lewis is the same. When he eventually retires people will then look back and say. He certainly deserves more respect than he is afforded. It make me wonder when people always say he wins bcoz of a good car...and everyone conveniently forgets his drive, determination and attention to detail. He's a great champ this guy

People who say that are really only revealing things about themselves. There is nothing more pathetic than trying to take away from someone else's success.
That race was the first GP2 race I ever got to see. By halfway through it, I actually called out to my husband that I was watching a future F1 champ. The only other one I've said that about, since being married over 30 years ago, was Max at Spa. Hubby's not in the slightest bit interested, but I still tell him :)
Turkey 2006 was so epic. The racecraft and natural feel, the yellow helmet. RU-vid came out in 2005, so I remember back then the early racing highlights were the best. No videography and dramatic music, just highlights and engine noise. I remember when Lewis's epic Turkey race highlights were put up and people were just in awe. That was a strong field and that early spin would have dampened the confidence of most. Lewis took risks that race that could have detrimentally affected his championship run...but he still was calculated and ballsy enough to go for the gusto.
@@AS-cw9no I'm not saying you're wrong but he also has a very calm demeanor, no shouting no crying, no toxic ego that is associated with "men caring". Does part of that come from being the only black guy in the room and having to be better then everyone else to get half the credit maybe. Maybe it's just his way.
I thoroughly enjoyed this insight into Lewis's start in F1. He had the right attitude from day 1. His Dad taught him well, He has a remarkable character. He wasn't perfect, made some mistakes but who doesn't. Mistakes are expected in life, its how you turn them around/or rise above them that matters. People tend to use those to judge him, but who made us Judge and jury over anyone's life. He has shown time and time again how to rise after those really bad days. #yetstillirise and he's continuing to make history as he does. I am thoroughly enjoying watching. Love you Lewis!
Great book! Really well written and holds your attention all the way through. I've heard reports that Lewis still to this day spends a lot of time in the garage and factory and is as curious as he was back then, asking questions of every mechanic. I believe he's the hardest working driver on the grid.

Lewis's performance that day is....still 1 of the most impressive things I've seen in racing. Ever. Perhaps the most impressive by a driver who didn't win the race.
I don’t care what other people say, but I kno Lewis is the best sportsman in the uk. 6 times World champion... confident, passionate, dedicated ,a positive mental attitude and the will to do better. Can you imagine what the England football squad could achieve if they had Lewis’s attitude

I was 6 whenever the GP2 series was on as a highlights programme for ITV, Although the name Lewis Hamilton sounded familiar, I wasn't able to follow the races properly or to put it like this watch the highlights of the race and not have a clue what's going on behind the action of the event. But as soon as I watched video clips about him of when he was so superior to the other competitors Like the F3 Euro Series in 2005, when he absolutely obliterated the whole competition to win 15 out of 20 races to clinch the title and withstand the challenge of Nelson Piquet Jr. to win the GP2 Series a year later really signifies what a prodigy he was going to become to British motorsport. Like Turkey 2006, to come out almost from the doldrums of being plum last to pip Adam Caroll to finish 2nd in the support race justified a true making of the champion of a man from stevenage who would be crowned the future king of formula 1 not to be the first black driver to do so but in the history of grand prix motor racing that will cement him with the all time greats of F1 and previous stars before him like Tazio Nuvolari, Rudolf Caracciola, Bernd Rosemeyer, Richard 'Dick' Seaman, Achille Varzi and many more. I really learned and understood the fact of his shyness behaviour in a way that he is a guy that wants to keep a low profile but at a same time by getting stuck in into all sorts of physical activities by unlocking his mental strength and ability by utilising that behind the wheel of a race car. Elvis, Once again, your story still inspires of wanting to get involved in formula 1 even today and I couldn't help by saying thank you for sharing this wonderful and inspiring story because your in depth about your personal experience, knowhow and insight made me delve more into the chapter and indulge into the incredible man that is the one and only: Lewis Hamilton. Having mentioned about his dominance in his second year in F3, one of the rounds that he won twice was the Monaco Grand Prix F3 race and remains the only driver of this century to this day to have done that and the last to do so (when the series was a 2 race round at that time), That'll give you some knowledge that he managed to do it in F3 before going on to do it in the GP2 Feature race and again in F1 3 times with McLaren (2008) and Mercedes (2016, 2019).
Hey matey, I appreciate your insight into Lewis' character. I feel very frustrated with all the trolls who have been nowhere close to the paddock. How strange when the history book, divers, mechanics, and any other person involve in F1 believe that he's among the greatest but some dudes out there thinks it's just all a scam, that this shit is all made up. We have a bunch of absolute super stars on the grid and let's just be happy to be part of this lifetime instead of comparing apples with oranges.
That is a great insight into the mind of a young Lewis Hamilton. I remember when he first signed and raced for McLaren. I think he finished 3rd in his first race ? which was incredible. Seeing a young black dude in F1 was very unusual...and still is unfortunately. That is what initially made me want him to succeed. Little did i know just how good he was, and still is. "There were fights internally over who was gonna have which driver, and they weren't fighting for Lewis" Marc talks about this in his book. He describes how they all wanted to work on Alonso's car because of the obvious fact that he was a proven world champion while Hamilton was a relative nobody at that time but Alonso fanboys have been lying about this for years. They all love to claim that Alonso joined a team that only supported Hamilton but it's just a load of BS. Alonso had the whole team wanting to work with him and then started lying to the Spanish media about McLaren only supporting Hamilton because he couldn't handle getting beat.
Correct ,but as also pointed out lewis was no angel. and so was not totally innocent as people think ..Strangely the same scenario happened at Merc when Niko was there ..There is a PR lewis And the one we do not see behind the scenes
Alonso fans have a problem because they can’t accept that Lewis was too damn fast. One wonders what would have happened if he’d raced on Michelins though.
Great content I like that you made this because lewis gets alot of hate about having the best car. But if you follow his career from the beginning you will realised he was only going to become a multiple world champion he has dominated from childhood.

Agreed. He’s in the best car and people say anyone could win the WDC in it. Maybe so but could they win five of the last six and more than likely this years title as well? I doubt it.
put max in a mercedes and see if lewis still wins every race, hes good AND he has no one racing against him, the car is 1 second faster and bottas is just mercedes yes man
asasasasa the fact that Mercedes is has been willing to give him multiple year contracts at probably a huge cost despite the prevalence of talent on the grid (such as Max) that they could easily snap up is a testament to the value he brings to Mercedes - it's not an argument against him. OK put Max in a Mercedes and then what? If Lewis could draw level with a double world champion as rookie, what makes anyone think he won't be able to handle Max now that he has 6 titles?

Yes he beat Rosberg, Button, Fernando but it doesn't mean he is better or worse than Max , and enough of assuming that he beat all those guys and he will run over Max, easily like it's walk in park. Fernando and Lewis , had same points so I wouldn't consider he totally beat Fernando. It's a draw.
The post picture with you & Ham. What does it say?? I’m, a huge, huge admirer of Lewis & what he’s been able to not only achieve but more importantly, what he’s been able to wring out what’s available to him time & time again.
Lewis is a Legend and he IS the greatest driver of all time. He’s got a great car but he’s the one who’s helped develop it with Mercedes. He’s the one telling the mechanics and designers what’s needed. Giving the team the feedback, telling them what’s going on on the track. Without Lewis the team would not be able to make the changes that have been proved to work. I know a driver is only as good as the car but the car is also only as good as the driver. Both car and driver have to work in sync and Lewis is the master at this. Mercedes would not have the car that they have today without Lewis at the wheel. I remember there was a story about Senna where he told his McLaren mechanics that there was a strange noise coming from the engine of his car. They checked and checked but couldn’t find anything wrong. Senna didn’t accept their findings and insisted they check again. He was right. It was a faulty cam shaft that if not replaced would have failed during the race. Driver and car as one. Lewis takes this to another level.
Spot on, with the car development. I said the same to myself about Damon Hill with that Williams that Mansel won with, because of Damon’s input, not taking anything away from Lewis, just another driver not respected.
For all his qualities, he was an impetuous little bugger during those early years and that almost certainly cost him the opportunity to have another title at McLaren IMO. That aside, I loved his tenacity and sheer talent from the first race that I saw him in action, which is why I've been a support ever since (besides him being a fellow Brit, of course)! 🙂
People constantly seem to look for a reason to criticise and find fault with Hamilton and it's a real shame. The guys a once-in-a-generation talent and it'll be a long time before we see the likes of him again. I think that of the current drivers on the grid Verstappen is as close to the raw driving talent that Hamilton has but whether he has the same mental fortitude and desire remains to be seen.
This was one of the most fascinating talks I've ever watched. I seem to get more impressed with Lewis Hamilton as the years go on. He is the greatest, such a phenomenon and an inspiration.
Can't imagine how it must feel to be part of the team that started the career of what is almost certainly going to be the most successful F1 driver ever. Mclaren spent years trying to take down Michael Schumacher in his prime now I guess they will sort of have succeeded many years later in beating his records

Marc, your storytelling is phenomenal! I noticed Lewis from his first F1 race and was thoroughly impressed. For a while Fernando probably felt slighted to be compared to a rookie, but in hindsight it actually showed his ability.

Always thought Lewis has a incredible concentration level, instilled by his dad Anthony at a young age -ref. Watch his blue-peter appearance, driving a remote controlled car and my comeback for the people who say he's in the fastest car is 'how come his teammates aren't world champs? Rosberg got lucky and got out!

@@peterh9238 Not only in F2. Also in other race classes. His first F1 races were impressive and all of a sudden it started to go down. I can't believe that Alonso alone was to blame for this. There must have been other factors playing. One can not suddenly unlearn how to drive....

At the time I thought he was being reckless and doing it for the money. It turned out as the best driver move anyone has ever made. McLaren haven't won a race since then.

Sure McLaren haven't won....but the 2 podiums they've had since have come directly from Lewis punting off Albon to clear way for Sainz/Norris to finish P3....Still helping McLaren all these years later lol
He reminded me of another brilliant driver back in the mid-late 70’s, sadly didn’t have the luck and his father didn’t have the money when he went from kart to formula ford. Parents sold their house to get him a chance but that fell through. He went on to be a world beater in weight lifting..Lewis Gee from Southampton

I actually have a degree in Automotive Service Technologies, unfortunately I no longer pursue a job in a public automotive shop mechanics setting but I have always dreamt in wonderment what it might be like to be apart of an F1 crew like you once were. As I recall, he almost won the championship in his first year. Just that slide into the gravel in China prevented him from doing so. I was horrified when it happened. So close to his 7th championship. Perhaps the cleanest racer in history?
That race in Istanbul was one of the very, very few GP2 races i watched live.. And what a race it was, it was truly astounding how fast Lewis was compared to anyone else. It is notable however that he was taking a LOT of risks, he flipped the coin several times and had all of those flips turn up in his favor. Regardless of "luck", it was absolutely not luck that made that performance look just.. astounding. I dropped what i was doing too, i was locked on that screen. And i really, really didn't care about GP2 back then.
This series of stories from treehouse is fascinating. 🙂 As a Finn though I must say 20 people in 15 person sauna is normal thing. 😁 You just sit every second one a bit back and every second one a bit more front and problem solved. Of course you can always use the lower benches too but with that amount of people it's not yet needed 😄
As a white person who was born and brought up in South Africa I was very pleased with Lewis got the drive. I thought that it was long overdue that a person with African heritage became a driver. I still am a fan of him.
You are right Marc, F1 drivers appear to have an unusual talent, but only a few have this drive to perfection, that few people can sustain. Niki Lauda definitely displayed this characteristic also. Thanks for the read!

Hi, I literally just bought your book "The Mechanic" online because of this video. I knew my next book would probably be F1 related, but I never though it would be a book focusing on the mechanics. However for an insider's perspective of F1, I'd think there'd be no better insight than from your point of view. Looking forward to the read!
