Electric motor of our Lewmar windlass stopped working when we first used it. I decided to take apart both motor and gearbox. And it was necessary!
TECHNICAL INFO: F1 and F2 are directional plusses, A is going to center winding and connected to F1 or F2, depending on the direction of the windlass, and NEG is ground/negative.

I learned at a young age how to fix boats. I moved out from home after graduating High school. My new land Lord had a sinking 101 antique ship. He get me and my roomate down on this sinking ship and tells is what to do and we did it. We were waiding in water and now that I'm older I'm sure it wasn't long befor we were going down. So we took out the bilge pumps and cleaned the gunk from the electric side of the Motors and had them working in minutes. It was a definet learning experience in my lifetime. Now I have 6 Boats and learned how to maintain them the right way.

I'm in a somewhat same situation as you. My Sprint Atlantic "A" windlass(obsolete?) motor(not original) was toast as I lowered the anchor. Removed the motor and contemplating to DIY or send for professional fix. You gave me the confident of DIY as you said you're amateur and then went ahead and dismantle and assemble the motor back. The fact that your motor still faulty was very likely due to internal failure like the coil open circuit. Thank you.

Yeah, the first and only time we used it, it stopped working and I smelled electric burn, so it really must be toast. And about DIY - when you just start working on it, often it's way more simple then you were afraid for, huh? 🙂And when something is toast anyway, it actually doesn't matter anymore, haha! But that (and the lack of a large bank account :D ) makes me want to try everything myself. And when you disassamble something, and put it back together again (hopefully), you know how it works, which can be very handy when you are on your own at sea.

I dismantled my Windlass motor (Lemac model 65579-053) and found at least 2 of the magnets shattered to pieces!🤦‍♂I'll have to bring it to the professional. Hopefully they can stick in new magnets. 🤞

I'm in the process of doing similar to my Lewmar Concept 1 winch, very similar to yours . perhaps newer. The thru-deck bolts are frozen to the gearbox case so am struggling to get it out yet. You have shown me some things to be aware of when I finally get it to a bench to take apart . In my case the the gear box has the problem, Thanks for the video.

You're welcome 😊 I am still struggling with that thing! Got to get it out again to remove the electromotor. Took me more than an hour! Motor is toast and even in the Lewmar factory they don't know anything about that 4 pole motor anymore 🙄😅

@@DoubleUThings Although Lewmar is a British company everything on my winch is metric and the gearbox has Bonficlioli on the casting, sound Italian so perhaps the electric motor is from Italy. My motor is also a 4 pole. Hope something works out.

Bravo very good and detailed job. I have a semilar like yous (Plastimo) and what i have notice from your video is that , the code VF 47 ( on the gear piece) is exacly the same like in PLASTIMO 1000w windlass. so thanks to your video i made a service to mine and works PERFECTLY !!! Thnk you !

Nice work on the video. I just removed my windless, motor works on mine, but not enough power. I think I need to grease the gearbox. It seems very dry. I wouldn't have thought to try it but now watching your video I will attempt it, though finding the seals may take some time. I have 32 year old simpson-lawrence anchorman Power 700.
@DoubleUThings
@DoubleUThings Год назад
Thanx! Finding the new seals was actually not the problem. I just ordered them via the internet, when we were back in the Netherlands for a short time. Ours is the same age. And that not enough power thingy - ours the same. All that old stuff is not good enough for the heavier anchors we use nowadays, I think.

@@DoubleUThings I found something that might help you. From the Video the electrical connection were the two outside lugs, but this diagram shows outside and center D1 goes to switch ( or your positive ) and A2 is the battery gnd. D2 is not connected. Worth trying

How many rotor carbon brushes were there? I was expecting to see at least 2 but only saw one. Most dc motors are at least two pole motors and they require one carbon commutator brush per pole. Was there a brush assembly mechanism on the opposite side of the motor case? Very good video

Thanx! But it's still not working, haha! Next job. I probably need to find a new (and stronger) electromotor.
@andyx7687
@andyx7687 2 года назад
@@DoubleUThings I am sure it worked when it was new. You do not need a stronger motor. Maybe you can find a motor shop which can repair your motor, or find a new one, but first make sure the motor is getting power. There must some relays somewhere which send power to the motor. check them out.
@DoubleUThings
@DoubleUThings Год назад
@@andyx7687 Sorry, I didn't see your reaction. Relays are fine. I checked all that. Motor is probably burned, because it smelled like that :-)

Maybe should have tested it before replacing the whole thing, and get hold of a sheet of gasket paper so you can make your own gaskets, some times , not all, extra clearances that gaskets make, can be a determining factor, bets of luck with it, Al

I totally agree, Al 😬😂 I hope I'll learn from my mistakes one day. And i thought i had paper gasket, as you can hear in the video, but we are often at places you can't get anything else than groceries. And thanx!

De winch had zeker onderhoud nodig ,heb je een voltmeter aan boord om een en ander na te meten? Heb eens naar elektrische schema's gekeken van een winch en de meesten hebben nog ergens een zekering ,zou het dat kunnen zijn? Geweldige video in elk geval!
@DoubleUThings
@DoubleUThings 3 года назад

@DoubleUThings
@DoubleUThings Год назад
Haha, I give you and me not much chance 🙂 I am still trying to get a new motor for this one, but even the manufacturer doesn't know anymore it ever existed! They know about the V700, but not about models before that. It is possible to repair your gear, though. If a welder welds up the "teeth" (make them bigger), and have somebody with a lathe and enough technical knowledge make the teeth as new, you are good to go. But I don't know how expensive that will be. Depends on which part of the world you are in. The poorer the country, the more people will be able to repair, instead of replace :-)

yeah new content from the dutch neighbors 14:49 Not totally wrong but it is not the best idea to push a screwdriver between 2 sealing surfaces because you damage the sealing surfaces^^ next time for example try to hold it 5cm over your table and carefully give the main shaft a few with the hammer maybe with a piece of wood between shaft and hammer to avoid damages on the shaft Edit: against the rust you can use phosphoric acid just brush it on the surface and let it work Works as a rust converter Grüße aus Deutschland

Haha! Yes, it was about time, huh? I have tried to upload this one already for 3 weeks, but no decent enough internet. I finished the next one an hour ago. About the screwdriver 😁 It was not the best idea indeed, but i purposely used a "rounded" one. It doesn't have any sharp edges. And it has a soft character, haha! Thanx for the phosphoric acid tip, although i wouldn't know where to get that. Freundliche Grüßen zurück von die Nachbarn in Malta.

@@DoubleUThings maybe Malta have a Growshop? haha PH minus bloom from Canna for the special "Flowers" ... is 59% phosphoric acid Otherwise maybe on ebay or ask at the hardware store but wear gloves and take care of your clothes The acid bleaches out the color Grüße nach Malta

A test you could have done before installing the motor back is as follows: with the help of a car battery and jumper cables, yoou could have easily tested the motor. at the end it must be very simple. The negative cable is the common, then you have two studs for the two spinning directions, to be connected to the positive. Unless you messed up with the contacts of the carbons inside the motor.
@DoubleUThings
@DoubleUThings Год назад
Yep, you are right. The thing is that this particular motor has 4 cables. I know what the negatives and the two spinning direction cables are, but I don't know what the fourth one should do. I already asked a Lewmar dealer, but they had to send the question to Lewmar itself. Still no answer. Nowadays there are probably just three cable motors... So i didn't dare to test it, because I was afraid to ruin it.
