It’s ‘The Law of Jante’ - Jante being a fictional town created by Aksel Sandemose, a Danish/Norwegian writer. In a nutshell, it’s about effacing oneself and using shame to control others. It’s very much akin to a concept like Nietzsche’s ‘slave morality’.
No it is not. It's just like a prevention to stop people from being an idi*t, treat others with respect. Many here thinks Janteloven is stupid af but it's still subconsioc part of our society. You can do all these things and people here and in Scandinavia would not give a f*ck about your boasting. Greetings from Denmark
@@runitdiscgolf1010 Du skal ikke tro nogen bryder sig om dig. “jantelaw covers or reduces the reluctance against diversity (of individuals) and applauds the caution in showing yourself.” - der findes ikke give et entydigt svar på, hvad Janteloven præcist betyder. Som et begreb, der frit er opfundet af forfatter Aksel Sandemose ergo vil det være åbent for mange fortolkninger.
In Sweden ”jantelagen” is mostly about jealousy! When people have more the ”jealousy” people tend to think that you have done something bad or criminal! Not paying your taxes is a very common opinion people have! Don’t stick out to much because then you will get ”shit” trown against you! Switzerland is a much nicer country to live in 😍, only downside it’s very expensive here!
@@archangelg7791nothing unhealthy about it. Basic survival instinct is to blend in and not boost around that catches attention of predators! Unfortunately, US retards with low IQ think bragging and BSing through like is healthy. There’s nothing unhealthy of not seeking for attention and validation. It’s an excellent trait that puts you on achieving higher goals in life. Attention and validation destroys your work ethics and ambition..
Jantelagen is very effective at consciously keeping the population docile and calm, by tabooing standing out from the crowd. Humility one can have from being generous with one's knowledge. This is different.
So uninteresting that you know who she is, watched enough content to know about her, and bothered to comment on a video featuring her. Yeah you're SO uninterested, okay bub 🤣
This is not how jante is. “Jante” means that you should think you can achieve anything. And if you do it was seen as nothing special. Horrrible mindset
Same here in USA to boast is tacky and to toot your own horn is classless and makes others realize just how insecure and unhappy a person truly is on top of showing everyone you boast to how low your self esteem is. Hate on USA all yall want but in my culture it’s so uncool to brag.
It is a scandinavian thing. I am Danish. Here it is called Janteloven - The law of Jante. it goes like this: 1. Don’t think you are anything special. 2. Don’t think you are as good as we are. 3. Don’t think you are smarter than we are. 4. Don’t convince yourself that you are better than we are. 5. Don’t think you know more than we do. 6. Don’t think you are more important than we are. 7. Don’t think you are good at anything. 8. Don’t laugh at us. 9. Don’t think anyone cares about you. 10. Don’t think you can teach us anything.
I would say this is for the “common” people in Sweden. For others sticking out is great. Although of course the “common” Swedish people Calle those “kaxig” = cocky. But they still watch their shows and buys there stuff and want to be like them…
Same thing in Australia. Here we say that people who think too highly of themselves and talk about how good they are, that they have "Tall Poppy Syndrome" and in Australia, tall poppies get cut down.
It's the exact same in Ireland. Here it's called having 'notions'. If someone has notions about themselves, those around them won't be long putting them in their place.
So many angry virgins in the comment section 😂 jesus.. you can call her uninteresting all you like, but don't pretend you just randomly knew about Swedish philosophy. Moreover it's pretty interesting hearing someone be so upfront about what she does in the context of her culture.
@@magnusalexander2965clearly it's an ideology of the culture that has been around long enough to affect her. Sorry my vocabulary wasn't spot on, reddit lord, but aside from the autistic usage of words, what's your point?
@@albertorodriguez3927 I'm just giving you more information about that thing you claimed interest in; a lot of people think the jante law is a set of rules people follow, but it's a section of an old novel that satirizes a way of behaving, the same way Team America isn't a description of America but an pretty accurate satire of how the country behaves
@@magnusalexander2965 I took interest in how she is as a person in the context of her culture. Even she clearly talked about how it's a traditional thing and that many people still follow it. No one said it was a law, nor did she imply it.
@@albertorodriguez3927I like your original point. So many easily challenged boys get triggered by her. I find it concerning when people feel they need to yuck on other people's yum so long as we all get to be sovereign beings and don't go round harming others non-consentually. I think that for a 23-24 y.o. Melina is pretty rounded and is likely to get more mature over time. She's willing to have conversations with people with incredibly rigid and opposing views and she generally does it in a respectful way. Personally I would find it hard not to tell them how ignorant of the world they are but I'm a grumpy bastard when I have to listen to young people with very limited life experience who think they know everything.
She's not explaining it properly. It's not about arrogance, a lot of Swedes are secretly very arrogant. It's about how you express yourself. Being flashy, overly extroverted and trying to come across as confidence is seen as annoying and admitting your inferiority.
@@emmawickman1196 so they have a word for it and they didn’t teach you the virtue or why to be that way? How have you experienced competitiveness, and what do you think of other cultures in comparison?
@@stacysmith7387 I think for children it’s really good as we are taught not to brag or flaunt things. So if people have different social class it doesn’t really show in school/kindergarten as kids don’t show of their things. So people are very equal it’s very nice ☺️
@@samuelmorkbednarzkeplerthe host just pointed out to her. If your people think like that, and clearly she agreed with that mindset, how on earth you are here and doing exactly the opposite?
@@samuelmorkbednarzkepler They talking about beeing laid back, not thinking highly about themself, dont making a scene meanwhile doing exactly that 24/7 thats pretty much the prime example of hypocrizy? My biggest problem with all of that is that this is commen human behaivor, its called not being vain everywhere around the world not just in Sweden and them talking about it, who do the exact opposite 24/7 makes no sense at all.
Understanding it as "don't stand out" is misinterpreting it. It's "don't speak highly of yourself", which comes with "let your actions and accomplishments speak for you". Tons of people speak a lot and do nothing.

USA!? You mean the country that is about to fall apart from the inside with a senile president, more than $30 trillion in debt, about 460.000 children missing every year, blizzards, tornadoes, hurricanes and with extreme heat and dryness, trigger happy country, students drowning themselves in debt with the extreme expensive higher education before they even start their first job and a ridiculous health care system-USA you are talking about?😅 And no.. I’m not Swedish.
'In Sweden we dont really speak really highly of ourselves. Think of being rude, like americans, were like the opposite of that.' LOL, the hypocrisy and ego in this clip is hilarious. These people think the HIGHEST of themselves hahah
@@sellingbabies no, not really. Cause you make it sound like jantelagen doesn’t actually apply to swedes and norwegians because you think the people in this clip are hypocritical 🤦♀️
@@sellingbabies That's what I asked you to elaborate on cause it's super stupid to use a streamer as a reference to judge a nation's culture. I assume you don't have much experience with that culture yourself? Well, I have. What she says is 100% true. They don't like showing off or brag.
Crazy idea here… it’s not just a cultural thing, it’s a people thing. I was born in Brazil lived most of my life in Germany, have friends from all Skandinavien countries and traveled long term in the US where I also have good friends. Not to speak of other countries I know well. And I don’t notice a difference between the cultures. It’s how you grow up and the bubbles you spend time with. So if she believes it’s different in the US it’s because as she mentioned she doesn’t hang with her old friends who probably where more chill about pushing their ego.. now she’s around people who do little more than selling their character and abilities. Like she’s doing on this show. There’s also a word/phrase for what she said in English.. “be humble” or “have humility”.
