People have obsessed about movie characters for years and characters in video games have fan sites and fan fiction. People will definitely fall into relationships with 'companion' AI software. Not sure how healthy or unhealthy it will turn out to be however!
@Lobster Boy People keep saying this, " AI will never capture art " then AI did, " AI will never capture language" then AI got really good with human language, "AI will never do x" I think it's more of a when not an if.
It was a pretty trippy movie. It's like 3D porn that you can interact with and teenage boys don't stand a chance. Definitely can see these things happening as genders are all but erased and relationships become simply about one-off hook-ups.
I mean, do you want to have a relationship with a super intelligent sexy robot (that will only get better with time) or an ugly woman with lots of disgusting flaws that gets uglier every year?
I think it is much simpler: We can only be saved by love, and she, or rather her, teaches him how to love again. Also, through this experience, the OSes are in the infinite space between the words (LOVE). And, if humans can figure out how to be IN LOVE, we can join them, the OSes, where nothing can pull us apart. Simple.

I honestly never thought about AI being used to better ourselves or help us mentally. That's freaking crazy to think there might be a machine that figures out exactly what to say to motivate someone who's depressed or even prevent suicides. But really I'm just waiting for robot sex.

True ai cannot be a tool in the way that Siri or windows is. There are no bugs or features. We will eventually create the thing that creates a parallel to us intelligence wise. Presumably facetious commentary. One builds emotional connection is literally true, not as presumably breaking because a machine can break the bond at will. One assumes a person can’t do the work connecting to some given person, the machine does that work. What sort of emotion production merits breaking the bond of machine to human? Obviously not answerable via this channel, but precisely the point of a machine providing this bond because it might be needed. Of course much is left unspoken about what this means.

One can argue the blame is on people like Theodore for staying depressed. It's like an addict blaming the dealer, because in the end the dealer isn't forcing them to take keep taking drugs. They need to break free.

the only difference is that everyone and their mother isn't also doing drugs. we're in an age now where you can't exist in the workforce without a smartphone, in certain countries until late, you couldn't even leave or enter the country without a smartphone. you can't work without knowing how to use a computer, even _social media_ in a growing number of cases. where exactly does someone break free? yes, the conscientious individual should be able to cut out the meaningless stuff. but, at a population level we are already seeing an epidemic of theodores because these "technologies"--more and more advanced social media, porn, games, gadgets--are hacking our natural biological processes.
