Lexus ES 2019 the luxury saloon of choice in 2019?

The Lexus ES is a full-sized Executive saloon that might get forgotten in a segment dominated by cars like the BMW 5 Series, the Mercedes E-Class or the Audi A6. Yet it doesn't deserve to be. It offers (non-Plug-in) petrol/electric power for less than you'd pay for a smoky diesel version of a Teutonic competitor. And much more equipment too. If you want to spoil yourself in this segment and luxury and low running costs take precedence over drive dynamics, the ES could be an appealing package.
Background
It was time to do something different. Lexus has never made much impact on the full-sized Executive segment through four generations of its GS saloon. It was rear-driven, just as the brand thought Mercedes E-Class, BMW 5 Series and Audi A6-segment buyers wanted. But it remained a minority, left-field choice. So the company's started again in this sector with this car, the ES. It's not a familiar nameplate in Europe but on the other side of the Atlantic, the ES (or 'Executive Saloon') model line dates back to 1989 and has amassed 2.3 million sales.
Cynics say the ES is simply a poshed-up version of Toyota's largest world market saloon, the Camry. It's front-driven, like that car, is built in the same American factory and shares quite a bit of the same engineering. Lexus, in response, points to the huge design differences between the two models. And to the fact that the development sharing that has taken place has allowed them to price the ES below German diesel rivals, yet offer more sophisticated petrol/electric hybrid technology and higher levels of equipment.
Driving Experience
So what's the ES experience like? Very quiet, is the answer at the wheel of the ES300h petrol/electric hybrid version, which is the only one on offer in our market. Silence when first you begin and push the starter button. Silence when you ease through slow-moving rush hour traffic, the engine cutting in only above 25mph, unless you've a particularly heavy right foot. Like most hybrids, the car can trickle along powered by the battery pack only (as it is from start-off) or more usually, with a combination of both battery and engine, something you can monitor via a graphic display in the centre of the dash.
Of course, you don't get the kind of pulling power that would be on offer from a rival four cylinder diesel model from rival models in this segment. This ES hybrid's 2.5-litre powerplant puts out 215bhp and only 221Nm of torque. Plus as usual with a Lexus Synergy Drive powertrain, you must have it mated to a belt-driven CVT auto gearbox that, when you need rapid power, tends to encourage engine flare but not a great deal of noticeable extra forward motion. Talking of that, 62mph from rest if you're really pushing on can be dealt with in 8.9s en route to 112mph. And there's a 'Drive Mode Select' system with 'Eco' and 'Sport' settings, depending on how you want to drive. The front driven layout doesn't have the bite of rear-driven German competitors at speed through the turns, but few likely Lexus buyers will care about that.
Design and Build
The looks of this car will be a major determining factor in making people want to try it. Quite a bit has been borrowed from the Lexus brand's top boardroom-level luxury saloon, the LS - and that's a good thing in our book. It gives this ES a car park presence that German rivals struggle to emulate. Under the skin, much might be shared with a humble Toyota Camry, but you'd never know it.
There's much to like inside too. This car is longer, wider and slightly lower than the previous GS model, plus it has the advantage of front wheel drive packaging. All of that combines to produce a noticeably more spacious cabin. This is particularly evident in the rear, where legroom is plentiful. As for head room, well even six-footers will have no problem, despite the siting of the (new, smaller) nickel-metal hydride battery pack under the back seat. Up front, it's just as nice as cabins always are in Lexus models, with beautiful fit and finish and an interesting dash design that's refreshingly different from the fascias served up by German rivals. The infotainment system's an improvement over the set-up's provided in other Lexus models and comes with either an 8.0-inch or a 12.3-inch screen, depending on spec.

This car does not have a belt-driven CVT. eCVT might sound similar but it is completely different - no belts. It uses a planetary gearset to provide the continuously variable gearing. As this is such a fundamental feature of the Toyota/Lexus hybrid system, it does cast a shadow over the rest of your review.

Lexus spent more time designing their seats than Alfa did with their entire Guilia... I know you can't compare this to any Alfa, I've owned Alfa's before and still think that anyone remotely interested in driving should experience the brand for themselves, but it does highlight the different approach you get from the opposite ends of the reliability spectrum.

_Alpha:_ Great dynamics at the expense of "boring" details like consistent quality control (and therefore, reliability). _Lexus:_ Incredible attention to detail in all stages of production (hence the nigh-on legendary reliability) at the expense of truly exciting dynamics. These days even rivalling Alpha for striking exterior looks (and handily beating it in interior looks, in my opinion).

Lexus cars sold in Oz all look pretty like Toyota Camrys sold in Australia. No longer are Toyota Avalons (I once owned one) sold here. (cheap as chips but very reliable) Almost all taxis are Camrys.
@lxhotboy1
@lxhotboy1 5 лет назад
Exactly! The ES DOES NOT share with the Camry. The Avalon, a much bigger car, and the ES are built on the same frame. I wish people would stop saying thing like it is an upgraded Camry because it is a totally different car.
@jimv1983
@jimv1983 5 лет назад
It does share a little with the Camry but yes it really is more closely related to the Avalon. My best guess for the mistake is that up until the 6th generation it was based on the Camry. The 6th gen and 7th gen(current) are closer to the Avalon.
@gregsullivan7408
@gregsullivan7408 5 лет назад
Additional points: - The ES is actually more closely related to the Toyota *Avalon* - both are a bit longer than the Camry - The Avalon *does* have folding seats - I'd rather Lexus ditched those stupid struts and gave us the folding seats! - The fact that the battery is under the rear seat actually reduces rear head room by 0.4", relative to the petrol versions As a chauffeur, I think it is a big shame about the lack of rear head room, and the small boot. The Audi A6 would make a better limo IMHO.
@jimv1983
@jimv1983 5 лет назад
Where else would you put the batteries? Under the rear seat is much better than in the trunk. I've driven both the Avalon and the ES and the ES certainly drives better. If the support brace in the back has anything to do with it then it's totally worth not having fold down seats.
@gregsullivan7408
@gregsullivan7408 5 лет назад
@@jimv1983 of course it's better than putting it in the boot, but it's still a shame that it robs head room. We don't even get the petrol versions here in Australia any more, so I don't even have the *option* of spending more on fuel for a bit more rear comfort. Why can't they just make the whole car a bit larger. 😃 Re drivability - I couldn't care less - I spend 99% of the time in Sydney's bumper to bumper traffic. Ditch the braces Lexus.
@jimv1983
@jimv1983 5 лет назад
@@gregsullivan7408 my last car was a 2011 Camry hybrid. It didn't have folding seats because the battery was in the trunk. I had that car for 8 years and only missed having folding seats once or twice so my ES not having folding seats doesn't matter at all to me. The better ride is more important to me. Even if they made the car bigger the hybrid would still have less headroom in the back. Unless you mean only making the hybrid bigger in which case that makes production costs much higher since they'd have to make two different frames for the same model. That's too bad that you don't have the option of the gas only version. I've never really understood Toyota/Lexus decision process on what options to have in which places. Before I decided to step up to a Lexus I was looking at a 2018 Camry. For some dumb reason Toyota decided to only have the built in navigation option on the V6 model which I didn't want. For the ES version in other countries outside the USA Lexus offers power folding mirrors and rear heated/cooled seats but for some stupid reason the USA only gets manual folding mirrors (which I don't really care about) and no heated/cooled seats in the rear which I'd really like. Also, what does "putting it in the boot" mean?
@gregsullivan7408
@gregsullivan7408 5 лет назад
@@jimv1983 In Australia, we refer to the trunk as the boot - that's what we call it - the boot. Regarding making the whole car bigger, I suggested that as a way of keeping the current shape/proportions. The main thing I want is more rear head room. Yes, of course it will always have *less* head room than the gas versions, but all I want is *enough* head room. The ES simply doesn't have a lot of head room to begin with IMHO - even the gas version. Regarding the folding seats, I wouldn't use it that often either, but it would be handy. If the boot/trunk was really big, I actually wouldn't care so much about the folding seats, but it's not all that impressive. I'm currently in the Aussie built Holden Caprice, which simply has OODLES of leg, head, shoulder, AND boot space. It doesn't have folding seats, but it doesn't need them. It is a very large sedan, but unfortunately it's out of production now, and that's why I'm on the lookout for a replacement that doesn't cost the earth. The large Euro limos are extremely expensive - 4 to 5 times the cost of the Caprice. Even if I could afford the Lexus LS, it still doesn't have a boot that is as good as the Caprice. We clearly have different priorities, and that's fine of course. Btw, if you like drivability, you'd LOVE the Caprice - RWD, with a 6.2L LS3 V8. 🤣

@bonzobanana1
@bonzobanana1 5 лет назад
@@rayaanshaikh5830 I think you have a point there a quick look at the current pricing and the difference has reduced from what I've seen in previous years and also I believe Toyota's have improved with a mechanical launch gear in the CVT to massively improve long term reliability and feel. It is a worry though when you take a CVT car outside warranty and can be faced with a huge £3,000-5,000 replacement charge. Not such a big issue with Toyota as you get 5 years warranty but I think Lexus is only 3 years here. I remember reading on a forum where someone had bought a car with a CVT s/hand and it failed shortly after purchase and the repair bill was devastating. My house is on a hill too which are notorious for giving CVT bands a hard life especially when the roads are icey and there is no grip but not such a big deal with a physical launch gear. Saying that I'm unsure which Toyota and Lexus models have CVT's with launch gears and which are fully banded and much weaker and likely to fail after a few years. I wouldn't consider a car without a launch gear CVT.
