2003-2009 Lexus GX470: front brake pads
I change my brake pads every 20-30K miles. This is a pretty easy DIY project and a great way to save some money. I chose to go with OEM pads but pick what you’re comfortable with.
Tools:
• Breaker bar
• Torque wrench
• 17 MM hex socket
• 21 MM hex socket
• Lug nut key locks (if applicable)
• Needle nose pliers
• Anti-seize grease
• Racket
• Gloves
• Jack stand
• Jack

Your wife might be pissed that you borrowed her Lululemon yoga pants to make this video. Just kidding… it’s actually quite genius. Probably the most comfortable way to do the “crouching mechanic hidden brake pad” position. Jokes aside… really awesome video! Super informative with great angles. Thanks!

OMG, You don't need to remove the long bolt (17's), those are there to hold the two sides of the caliper. Neither the ones on the back.

if changing pads only, no need to take any caliper bolts off.... if u do not have a quad spreader, u can use channel locks or flat head screwdriver prying on old pad one side at a time and leave the old pad in when doing one side at at a time so pistons on opposite side dont move or pop out Good info on vid but several uneeded steps

Great video! This is the first time I have changed out my brake pads and rotors alone. Had someone looking over my shoulder last time. After I had my oil changed and tires rotated, the mechanic wanted to charge me $400 each for front and back brakes! I laughed at him and told him I did my own last time and know what it costs and the time it takes. They think because I am a woman, they can take advantage. So I got the parts, took a deep breath and dived in. My question is the torque specs from Lexus for the caliper bolts are 83 ftlb , but you did 20 ftlb. Please explain why the difference?

Nicely done and good job! It’s a pretty easy DIY and a great way to save money. As for the torque spec, absolutely follow your Lexus torque values/manual. Don’t forget to subscribe to the channel.

@@dr.jerilynvogelsang3922 Turn the steering wheel so you have more leverage. Make sure to use a breaker bar or a pipe on the end of your wrench or ratchet and that the nut is seated properly so you don’t round the fastener. Turn right to tighten and left to loosen.

@@512TXSDIY I understand that. Mine has 124K and I don't know what the previous owner did in terms of 100K maintenance (fluids, etc). I am going to do transmission fluid and the transfer case fluid (thanks for your video), and replacing brake caliper. Nothing crazy, but I have a few questions about transmission fluid change.

@512TXSDIY
@512TXSDIY 3 года назад
@@dr.jerilynvogelsang3922 Did you replace the washer on the drain and fill area? If not, make sure it’s replaced every time when doing transfer case fluids and torqued to spec to avoid leaks. Also, examine the whole unit to check for leaks. JB Weld is a great bandaid fix but if the unit has an actual crack, the transfer case will need to be replaced. Check eBay as well for used TC if needed. If someone knows if this part is interchangeable with 4Runners, please share/advise.

I picked up a GX470 last week and have been doing all the DIY stuff I can (engineoil/diff fluids, transfer case, etc) and your videos have been great! I noticed towards the end of the video when you turned the key to the on position there was a sort of whirring sound from the front left just like mine. Do you know what electronic or part makes this noise? Thanks!

@@512TXSDIY I've purchased a new set of OEM shocks. Still debating DIY the front shocks. Lexus didn't do us any favors with that "absorber control actuator."

Shalmaneser Shocks are not too bad to do. If you enjoy working on cars, I say give it a shot. When I converted my rear air ride to coils, it was about an hour each side with standard automotive tools. The front is a little harder but not by much.

@@512TXSDIY The rear struts are conventional, even I could do them. The front is... There's a pair of hex bolts that fasten the actuator. The inner one doesn't have clearance for a socket. It might have clearance for a ratcheting wrench with a chopped hex wrench. I'll get back to you on that.
