Lexus vs BMW reliability used to be an easy comparison. Lexus easily ran away with the win whenever we compared BMW and Lexus when it came to how reliable their cars were. However, in 2024 Lexus reliability and BMW reliability are much closer. Come see how!

The comments show people did not listen to the video: - He did not say BMWs are more reliable than Lexus. Only that Lexus is now having issues because they are forced to use smaller, turbo charged engines. BMW went through this process and have better engines and engine support systems now. - Yes, there are still recalls on BMWs. Many of the recalls people are pointing to are from BMWs from the same years and engines that are described as being very unreliable in the video. Saying the a water pump recall on a N55 platform disproves this video when he literally points out how bad the plastic water pumps on BMWs were shows you were too busy writing comments to listen. - He in no way is telling you to buy a BMW over a Lexus. If you still want a Lexus, by all means get one. He is just pointing out that you should be cautious about the Lexus you are purchasing and do your homework. Just like you should be very cautious before buying a used BMW. Don't assume that just because Lexus has great reliability means these new turbo charged engines will be without any issues.

He says that 'in 2024 Lexus reliability and BMW reliability are much closer' but the figures show you are more than 38% more likely to have a failure with a BMW than with a Lexus He says of BMW 'clearly they're much better than the average' quoting figures which indicate they are actually only 1% better. For reference Lexus are 28.5% better than average.

This is kind of what he says in the last 20 seconds of the video. Average failures 186 per 100,000 with BMW 184 and Lexus 133. So BMW are above average (though not 'clearly they're much better than the average' as he says) and are a long way behind Lexus. Yep, I was suckered in by the video title.

I’ve heard from someone with the naturally aspirated BMW having about 280K miles on it, manual 3, I think V6, and a friend with a 5 series manual, I think a V6 (late 90s), had about the same mileage before he bought a Tesla and sold the car. A person in my golf league has a 2005-2008ish I think V8 5 series, auto, over 180K miles. The late 90s BMW my buddy took to a lower cost BMW specialist business for maintenance and also did some things himself, the golf league guy knows cars a bit, and the other guy with the 3 knows cars to some degree. My uncle has had a fleet of BMWs building up for decades, he changes the oil on the cars and does some self maintenance. Never heard about major problems. I hear others with these cars though and a lot of complaints. Generally a Toyota or Honda is a good route if you don’t want to fuss with cars. I had a Pilot with 300K miles on it, ran exceptionally well, mostly just computer recommended oil change intervals.

Reliable cars are those that have old but proven technology. Here, a great example is Toyota/Lexus or Nissan, Mazda, Kia, Hyundai etc. You can't expect advanced cars like BMW or Audi to be just as reliable. You can't expect it from anyone anyway cars like Ferrari or Porsche etc. Some are aimed at people who pay attention to costs, and others at people who pay attention to above-average engine parameters and performance in corners. The target group of customers is different. Both groups are great but for different cleints. That's simple.

It's so funny, in a time when we are at peak power, gas mileage and reliability for NA motors, we are now forced to go to smaller boosted engines. History will not forgive us for this. But my last one died at just 83k miles. And they couldn;'t even say exactly WHAT was wrong with it. They went from good engineers to good businessmen. Selling overpriced bs designed to fall apart and need lots of repairs. Real shame. Japanese are far far better cars but don;t stir the soul in the way some German, British, Italian cars do... for me.

BMW can be reliable you just have to know which model and year you're dealing with I have a 09 328i which was one of BMW best years it had the N52 Engine Naturally aspirated inline 6 which was bulletproof I think what hurt a lot of car manufacturers with reliability is when they started adding turbos to everything which makes more moving parts and can make engines run hotter so you had a uptick of cars just breaking down or having something wrong with it all the time case in point I had a VW 08 Passat with a 2.0 turbo and those cars had a ton of problems leading to engine failure.

I got 2017 340 xDrive, tuned, at 98k miles with no major issues. Only issue is a strut boot rupture. Car drives like a bat out of hell. Lexus, is nice, but honestly its not even comparable. BMWs are fine so long as you take care of them, especially with this B58. Change the oil early. Brake flush. Coolant Flush. Do your brakes. Filters. Get regular diagnostics. I did the fuel injectors at 80k as preventative. If you want a boring car that you never have to touch, do that. But if you want something truly awesome and aren't afraid to spend a little and get your hands dirty....BMW is perfect. Handles better than a Subaru WRX, Accelerates faster than a Corvette C7 generation, and gets better fuel economy than a Civic Si. All while having 4 doors, AWD, and the latest tech.

It's a long video with a lot of information, so let me break it down for you: Lexus is the most reliable luxury brand now and ten years ago. Ten years ago, BMWs were terrible. Now, BMWs are much better than they were 10 years ago, but inspite of the decline in Lexus quality, Lexus is still more reliable by a more modest amount. Also, somehow, this is the government's fault. I have a hunch that the cost of repair, maintenance, and depreciation will still make the BMW cost of ownership more than I want to spend.

I’m on my third hybrid from Toyota (and only because I lease). Just before Toyota was dragged to the US court system issues with Hyundai and Kia. At that time I was driving a Kia hybrid but the lawsuit claim did not get near the fuel economy that the window sticker suggested and I tested it for four weeks in a row and got exactly what the window sticker suggested so I know that the US big three are not afraid to play dirty. Many Lexus owner who switch to bmw is due to how dull Lexus are to drive. If reliability is the only benchmark Germans have no chance of sale, but they outsell Lexus globally. Most people who own these cars don’t own them 10 plus years. They want to feel that thrill of performance and Germans know that, those are choices they have made. 3 series has lost some of its thrill because they went more close to nice ride and reliability got CR badge but lost enthusiasts as well. My buddy has 07 3 series close to 200k miles water pump replaced after 100k miles basis maintenance. I owned 3 series till 100k miles with no issues. Never any issues with many leased bmws and Audis. They keep breaking down none stop.

You can thank unrealistic government emissions targets for forcing Lexus to go to smaller turbocharged engines. I understand that Lexus has taken some hits recently but I’m sure that they’ll get it right soon. Furthermore the problem with BMW’s is that their parts are so expensive as is their service. I currently own two Lexus vehicles and they’re both fantastic, I would recommend buying a used Lexus car with the older engines and keep it for a number of years then Lexus will have it right.

Just traded my 22 RX 350 for a new 24 RX 350. I absolutely love it. It was time for the update. Actually more spirited driving with the higher end torque. I’ll bet on Lexus as much I love the X5

This is the way for the government to regulate us to EVs only. Not going to happen😂. Go back to gas only!

I’ve seen so many Lexus cars new and old models go for over 300k miles. BMW will barely do 80k with the check engine light popping on. To say the least just compare the X5 4.4 vs the sequoia, after 100k miles the bmw depreciated well over half the price because the suv is so unreliable. It’s not even worth paying a penny for it. Toyota sequoia on the other hand loses only a couple thousand and yet people are surprised on why the car is so expensive after 100k miles. It’s one of the best SUVs ever made reliability and value wise. 🤷‍♂️

The new , 2017+ engines from BMW, are among the most reliable in the world - the B58, an I6, is particularly great !!

The Lexus ES300h is an amazingly efficient luxury sedan. It is super-quiet, smooth as silk, and has a 550+ mile range. It averages 42+ mpg, which is superior to the ES350. Both are very reliable.

If you care about reliability get the Lexus but if you lease get the BMW since you get more for your money. The X7 is so much better than any lexus.
