Preserved former Provincial 16, Leyland National HOR 416L, cold start on a cold, wet, miserable 19th January 2022.
Greta Thunberg would love the exhaust fumes from the cold Leyland 510 engine. It's a shame you can't get scratch and sniff screens.
Ethel has awarded this 4 Stars out of 5 for clag.

@@slavishadThe 510 engine is a high compression engine 17:1 so to maximise fuel efficiency back then the compression was high. The lower compression ratio the quieter and less vibration but more fuel burnt though turbo can lessen this. Modern diesels have lower compression and a more complete firing order due to common rail technology making them more refined in sound.

That poor 510 knocking her guts out like a tart in the back of a Ford Zephyr, and cook your breakfast on the starter motor. Like any self respecting 510 Mk1 National to blot out the sun and wake the dead with that whining metallic clatter. Wow 7AM Stroud depot January 1978 stressed out hard pressed mechanics work their fingers to the bone coaxing life into a mixed stud of 680 RE,s and 510 Mk 1 Nationals in order to shift the school kids to Archway, Marling, and Maidenhill, the fog of oily grey exhaust fumes must be seen to be believed, those poor bloody birds unwittingly gassed and drop off their twigs.

I wonder what makes those Leyland engines so much worse to start from cold then similar engines of the same age. I'm no expect but my guess is it is in the fuel pump design, that shifts the timing at start rpm's too late hence making it start "less easy". Mechanical fuel pump are designed to perform to certain standard with "operating rpms" between low idle and high idle, so the start performance at 100-150rpm is more or less a coincidence, and much related to the basic mechanical design and pump cam profile. I guess it was good enough for the Leyland engineers back then to accept it.... (give me a break and don't start with no glow plugs, compression to start, bla bla bla...)
@tommyboy3227
@tommyboy3227 Год назад
What's the technical reason that these Nationals are so difficult (and smokey) to start?
@cornishadz
@cornishadz Год назад
No glowplugs fitted so relying on compression heat to start up. White is unburnt diesel
@CreRay
@CreRay Год назад
@@cornishadz That doesn't explain why Leyland engines struggle much more then other engines of the same age seam to do. Take a Scania engine from the same age, with mechanical fuel pump. At around 0 degrees those fire up just by looking at the starter button!

@ethelsshakybusvideos
@ethelsshakybusvideos Год назад
It is indeed LN5 (JIL 2795) which was originally Southern Vectis 876 (XDL 800L). It was converted to a mobile cafe by a previous owner. The Volvo engine has now been removed and a Leyland 510 engine will be fitted. It is in the restoration queue and will have a thorough strip down and rebuild, complete with bus interior. No idea about timescales. It is believed to be the earliest surviving short (10.3m) National.

70s but pennine didn't come to west Yorkshire in those days. we only had tilling red keighley / nbc poppy red west Yorkshire buses apart from the Halifax green and orange from Hebden Bridge every hour and the occasional Lincoln green nbc hired in for cover towards the end of the lodekka era. Pennine serviced skipton North yorks and the surrounding area towards Lancashire. The national was our first modern power steered, semi boxed bus. I thought it was the REs but apparently they didn't have power steering though they did have SCG semi boxes. Although the lwb mk1 national was instantly recognisable due to the clatter, I preferred the more civilised swb mk2 that keighley moved to.

@LeylandFiveTen
@LeylandFiveTen Год назад
In my defence this particular vehicle had a rather significant infestation of diesel bug and a non-functioning cold start (Nationals have CAV thermostarts that in most cases don't work, it's disconnected on this one). The air throttle isn't the most reactive of things on a 510 and as soon as it caught on all six cylinders I backed off, although you can't back off all the way or it'll cut out. Whilst I take the point and agree that it's not good to 'rev the nuts' off a cold engine that reached about half revs for little more than a second before I got it to settle down at a fast idle. Doesn't take long for it to idle with no throttle. It's been out on a few long trips this year and the diesel bug has been worked out of it, things can only get better.

That is similar to the Chase Bus Services vehicles (similar engine too by the sound of it; Leyland 510) that I used to see around Cannock (I heard these rev at the bus station (especially on cold days; the drivers revved the hell out of them after starting) there and boy were they LOUD! Have you seen those Borismasters, bloody awful, designed by a cretin, tell me more about those noisy Leyland Limpalongs Gardner 6LX with 4-speed Leyland Hydra-Cyclic Autobox. As We in Stroud had the basic Limpalongs with the attractive Charles Roe Bodywork, Gardner 6LXB , twirling a 5 speed Dual Mode Hydracyclic. Good hill climbers, but Stroud Depot blew many Hydracylics on steep hilly routes like the 92 to Forest Green, because in Auto Mode 1st gear or crawler is not available ,then drivers were taught to use the hold function marked 1 before climbing a steep hill. Some drove the Limpalongs in semi-auto mode, those old Limpalongs can pull, nothing beats a Gardner 6LX Hydracylic toggled in 1st for climbing steep hills.
