The reason I love watching Steve, he's very thorough on explanation and I agree maatta needed at least a tripping call. I kinda want to see a leafs-pens series this year
josh morley I'd rather see the Pens and Knights play for the cup, that would be a series to remeber for various reasons. The Leafs aren't ready for a cup in my opinion.
Steve, you're the whole reason I'm a Leafs fan. I just started following hockey in January of this year, and I found your channel, and never looked back. Keep it up :D
No need to overthink this. At home, Pittsburgh got the matchups they wanted. And their guys outplayed our guys, line for line. Notice how on a bunch of their goals the guy who puts the puck in the net is *entirely* uncovered? That's a reminder that defensively, the Leafs still are not great. We can often cover that up with a lot of possession, or just a lot of goals. But that was the case not last night. The Pens kept the puck and they moved it around well, and the Leafs were chasing them around our zone like chickens with their heads cut off. It wasn't even that they outworked us. They outplayed us. You want to beat the champions? You have to learn how to defend ... better.
Had a feeling we'd lose this one. When the broadcast showed the Pens bench going nuts after their first goal as if they'd just won it in OT, I thought, "crap, they look motivated tonight".
i'm a pens fan and can say maatta should have got a penalty, but i saw some people ripping on maatta calling him dirty but maatta is the opposite. he plays a passive game and rarely throws a hit, which is kind of frustrating sometimes because he isn't a small guy at 6'2. but maatta has taken his share of dirty hits, not to mention cancer. don't judge a player on one play guys (that clearly wasn't intentional). but all in all it should have been a penalty, not sure what the refs were looking at.
Great Game, I hope Hyman is okay. Glad you addressed the "Maatta did it on purpose" crowd. He obviously felt remorse about it, he looked shellshocked even standing there watching Hyman on the ice. That being said, OF COURSE it should've been a penalty. That one was cut and dry. All this aside, it was a great game, with a strong showing from both sides. I look forward to possibly coming up against the Leafs during the Penguins run to a Threepeat.
Relentless is a good way of saying it. To get to the next level, the Leafs have to learn how to maintain concentration for 60 minutes and be relentless. They'll get the hang of it.
I agree that there should've been a penalty on the Maatta. I hope that Hyman is alright and doesn't have a injury that could be long term. Also Malkin went into the boards after he lost a edge on the ice. He left the ice after the game was over before he did the hand shake line or any of that.
when i saw hyman take off into the boards, i was instantly thinking NO!!! how can the leafs compensate him? pick up grabner for everybody again? lol (though i'd love that being an austrian leafs fan...) but Grabs is not that puck-battle-machine. Hope so much Hyman is fine! you just can't replace him, with what he's doing for his line. and they have no cap-space to hire an overpaid jerk like kesler or lucic.
Is it just me or does Hyman get held/slashed/tripped all the time and the refs never call it? This is a prime example for some reason it seems like the refs think he just trips on his own or something. The dude deserves a lot more calls.
Leo's stick did indeed break. I saw it on the Pens feed. The blade snapped against the ice and then flopped back loosely into place after the shot attempt.
Kadri's line might have been on the ice for a few, but the defence on the ice at the time was the soft part. Gardiner, when he has a bad game the Leafs lose and this was a dilly for him. Reilly, on the other hand looked back to himself with some nice rushes. Matthews couldn't hit the net, couple rushes should have shot Leafs are trying to milk that cross crease tip in now.
Dude, just gotta say...found you (looks at clock) yesterday, and been binging the heck out of you for hours now. Mad respect for your ability to not allow fandom to overrule wisdom. And your excitement when things are going the Leaf's way is just awesome to watch. Sorry not sorry for the game. Yeah, Pens fan here (Since 87, no, not Crosby, the year). The Kessel trade stuff is how I found you. I'm sure as heck going to be following you moving forward. Best of luck to you and Toronto, at least, as long as it doesn't negatively impact Pittsburgh. #WalesNotCursed
As a Penguins fan who isn’t old enough to see Lemieux play without back pain/ owning part of the of the team, but remembers the post Jagr pre-Crosby years those people really annoy me too. I relish every second Crosby, Malkin, and now Kessel (thanks btw) are on the ice. We’re ridiculously spoiled, I’m fully aware. We think Mark Madden’s a joke too. Love the podcast + the LFRs
Steve I'm a big fan. I don't like the Leafs, because I think they're a joke. I'm from Pittsburgh and yes living here is pretty awesome. But you know hockey and I appreciate your enthusiasm. There are so many no talent shills sorrounding and analyzing hockey, Pittsburgh being home to many, but your not one of them. You're clever and funny and I enjoy your videos. I can imagine your pain and frustration with sports, but it's not an accurate depiction, I've been to a Super Bowl win, and the Penguins have won The Stanley Cup twice on my birthday, and most recently only minutes before. I know I'm spoiled. We all are in Pittsburgh. My brother was at Lemieux's comeback game. My wife took a very casual selfie with the Cup at her restaurant last year. It's just how it is here. I'm not trying to rub salt in the wound. I'm a fan just like you, but in 35 years I've watched 7 titles be won, however many deep runs, conference/division titles and hall of fame careers, so in that way we are very different. Still I definitely think you're doing a great job and hope the best for you, your fans, and you're channel. Let's Go Pens!
I'm gonna agree and say this wasn't my fave. Great for the few who got picked to get an interesting participation-shout-out ... but it wasn't good for the video itself.
Malkins line was just dominant. Too much speed with Rust and Haggy. Good test for your Leafs, Steve! I’ll say this again.. a 7 game series needs to happen!
Pittsburgh feed.zoomed in on the stick breaking. It snaps Bob goes".oh it breaks right there" then the tape pulls it like a rubber band straight again. Bob then says "and its magical back together"
Most terrifying moment of the game: when they mentioned Hunwick is on the trade block. Let’s all pray Babs doesn’t hear that and fight to reunite hunlak.
JVR must have had a shot of speed because he actually looked threatening on some forechecking. Bozak again makes me wonder where is his game most nights if this is what he can do. Brown too, whacked in a sweet goal be nice to get more of them and he played excellent all night. Kappy was quiet. Komarov was himself, oh please, he's had his chances, not even a lucky deflection lately.
The Kadri line had a rough game, but the D had it even worse. They could not do anything against the forecheck, consistently getting pinned in and turning the puck over. Hainsey/Rielly has been looking pretty ordinary over the last little while, they seem to get mixed up a fair bit against the tough teams. In terms of Kapanen vs Leo, I think Leo replaced Hyman cause he's a LW, if Nylander went down I think Kapanen would have moved up. Brown is also a RW.
I'm guessing moving your feet in the offensive zone more often results in pentalies big forechecks and turnovers especially. I don't know how leafs always play but that's how pens got 200 in 60 games...but if you look we get called just as much because of whole ice aggression
Jeff Veillette said it best. When you’re playing a dump and chase style for a large part of the season your not playing with the puck to take penalties as much as other teams are.
As a die hard pens fan ... I really hope we meet in the playoffs ... I would still cheer for my fuck.... pens but IF we loose ... the only team I can accept are the leafs. Keep up the good work.
The pens just understand themselves. The performance by the Leafs was impressive considering they barely understand themselves. It was haunting after the game remembering all the missed one timer shots, bad bounces.
this was a very good and close game to me honest. Leafs could have won 5 - 3 as well, they came close a lot of times to score more goals. A playoff with those 2 teams would be an entertaining show for sure!
Brian Elston for sure they are Batman and his little cronies have had it out For leafs since day one he hates any and all Canadian teams and the Leafs the most and his penguins are his Golden Goose that laid the egg and they can't do anything wrong but if you push Sid the wrong way it's a 10-minute game misconduct cuz he's nothing but a crybaby dirty rat
"Off the glass and out, without icing it" Sure, if you are going to give it away, at least make it in a place where they can't score. The defence looked bad last night, guys missing assignments in front of the net on a couple of those goals. And the whole team looked lost in their own zone many times. The past is gone, another game today, flush a reload.
He whiffed it. He was never scoring that goal no matter the state of his stick. I don't know if his stick broke on that shot, but I don't think it matters too much.
speedy That's what happens when you have a goalie you can rely on and trust, he can make the stops so the forwards cheat a bit making for a more aggressive breakout.
1st goal against. Put Kadri between two offensive wingers and see what happens when the puck turns over. Marner can't get back in time. The LW is no-where to be seen. And Kadri stops hustling because he knows there's nothing he can do to help the 3-on-2, and is waiting to respond. Everyone wanted Kadri with offensive wingers and they got it. Well Kadri, welcome to Bozak's World. That offense beats a team when they're down, but the fact is, Kadri is now a minus player in four of his last six games. Defensive player provides no drama, but it wins consistently. Fans wonder why Babcock likes players like Hyman, Komarov, Brown, etc. Well odd-man rushes will kill any goalie. Eliminate stuff like that and you can win the Cup with Osgood.
Everywhere I look on forums and youtube etc it seems like people are mentioning TANEV TANEV TANEV! Can we PLEASE STOP WITH THE TANEV TO LEAFS SHIT?!?! I DON'T WANT HIM HERE and especially not at the price that he'd cost and ESPECIALLY since he's so injury prone. I don't want that guy on the Leafs and the Nucks can keep him. If you're going to make a trade, make it for someone better or else just stand pat on the defense and bring up Holl and give him a shot. I know it probably won't happen unless there's alot of injuries again, but I wish the Leafs would give him a run of games and see if he can't handle it before we waste assets on a defenseman that we may not need in the next year or two. People seem to think we need to make a run for the cup NOW when I think of this year as another development year where going all in isn't necessary. I think next season or the one after when hopefully Liljegren and maybe a couple other prospects make the team is when we'll perhaps be ready to compete for the cup for real. This year if the Leafs win a round or two then I'll be happy that we've improved on last season.
Anyone else get pissed off how the refs basically let Crosby call a huddle before every faceoff after the Pens iced it in the last bit of the third period?
