I once coached a team in minor hockey that lost a game 1-0 without allowing a legitimate shot on net! The obvious was a penalty shot was called as a result of one of my players losing his stick while checking a players stick when he was right beside him. The referees deemed he "threw" his stick!!! How he did that when he was right beside him...I will never know! Besides that our players were tripped including one from behind on a break away, cross-checked, slashed, and hooked.. but the homer referees would not call a penalty! And the funny thing is the referees thought it was a fair result! Funny that's the same as this Leaf game!
I started following hockey a few weeks ago thanks to my friend who's a major Habs fan. She hates the Leafs of course, but she told me to watch your videos because they were the best, and she was right. They're not only extremely funny and heartfelt, but as a total newbie to the sport, I also find them very instructive. Now if I want to remember what the crease is, I know it's "That blue area in front of the goal where Petr Mrazek isn't". Many thanks to you Steve Dangle, all the way from France.
Glad to see someone getting into hockey. If you’re ever confused about penalties, just know we have the most inconsistent officiating in all of sports.
Welcome to the sport! Let me say, most of us try to be pretty welcoming, and certainly have no problem explaining the game to new fans. If you want some places to go, Steve is a good start, but check out The Hockey Guy too
@@sqwurd4610 thanks for the rec and the welcome! My friend is being super patient in explaining everything, but stuff like the trade system and waivers is still confusing. I hope the Hockey Guy can help :)
When Kallgren, a backup goalie in the AHL looks more comfortable and calm in the net then Mrazek, that’s when you know there’s an issue. Makes me wonder who they’re gonna start against Buffalo.
Every goalie looks like a world beater until shooters write the book on him. It's what allowed Matt Murray to win two Stanley Cups before collapsing in an injury-riddled mess.
Hey Steve, I’m 64. I’d trade you for 34 ANY DAY. 29 Isn’t even a memory anymore. And, loved your interview with the refs. The brick wall was a nice touch.
Steve's finally catching on how the NHL doesn't call many penalties against opposing teams that play the Leafs. The Leafs draw very few penalties compared to the NHL's favorite team Colorado!
I’m a goalie coach for kids. I’ve had brand new, first day in the equipment goalies with better positioning than Mrazek had on those goals. Simply put, this isn’t good enough.
The first two goals were some of the worst goals I’ve seen this year, and yet somehow not even the worst goal allowed in the NHL tonight. My god Nedjelkovic.
Lost in all of that commotion with Matthews was that the official WAS THE LINESMAN!!! (Had to check the replay vid and yes, refs still have the armbands)
All we have needed in the past 4 weeks is a goalie that can perform at an .880 save percentage clip... that's it - we're not asking for the world here... and they'd be sitting in first place right now... IN THE NHL. Lately we have been seeing 1 out of every 5-7 shots go in. Last night, before he got pulled, Mzarek let in 1 shot out of every 3. I say give the net to the kid.
I'm curious to see how the game against the Stars goes. Their shooting is either hot or cold, with nothing between. They could take advantage of every little error or make either guy look like a Vezina candidate. Which Stars team will show up?
I will say Steve i almost feel your pain with the non-call in overtime. The oilers had a similar situation against the caps when ovi had an infraction with about a min left which led to the caps tying it. The referees should be taught how to ref a game again, have their eyesight checked, and the league should review non-calls that lead to game tying or game winning goals, and if the league deems it sufficient the ref should be suspended and take a course again, this cant happen in a league of this prestige.
Very similar situation to the Oilers game. Reminds me of Vegas and Montreal in the playoffs. I find it hard to believe that there isn't a bias towards American teams in officiating.
This has been the book on Mrazek for years, in both Detroit and Carolina - very talented. Great athlete. Has no clue where his net is. Look at the Bergeron OT winner in Game 1 in the bubble. Dude is just way off his angle. Bergeron doesn’t need to pick a corner. He just needs to hit the far side because Mrazek is only taking half the net away. It’s not a new problem.
I was there live tonight the refs were terrible and didn’t call shit the fans booing the refs all game was awesome I’ll be back there on the 23rd hope the refs aren’t blind then
Got to be brutal being a Leafs fan at any time. But last night was hilarious ! Loved the comment about the second Coyotes goals trickling in like " a wet fart " LOL
It never fails.. Every time Leafs have a Golden chance to score in OT and don't, 99/100 the other team goes the other way and scores. It's so predictable.
Hot Take: Petr Mrazek isn't a bad goalie, it's the players in front of him that do not support him one bit. The Leafs suffer from "every man to himself"-syndrome. Mrazek didn't have these qualities in him when he was playing for the Canes.
Steve, just so you know. The linesman can’t call penalties, unless it’s too many men on the ice. So even though it was definitely a penalty, it’s not fair to yell at the official who was right next to the play because he literally can’t make that call.
As bad as that last call was, the Leafs should just be grateful for the point. A team that lets in four goals on twelve shots shouldn't expect to see overtime.
Im not one of the cool kids. So while the world wants to talk about 1)Refs 2)The OT back alleyway assault 3)Goalies Im like defence ? Anybody, anybody ? Bueller, Bueller Happy Birthday for Saturday Steve. Its fun listening to the kiddies rant about old age. Im 50 on Wednesday... didnt that sneak up in a hurry
Ik the refs cost the game for the leafs but make no mistake, the refs cost us the game in the last 10 seconds (granted those 10 secs were rly important). Mrazek costed us the game from the start
I'm pretty sure most people would love to have Rielly in their top four. See, the thing about Rielly is that he isn't goalie who is four feet from the puck and his own net. Rielly is an offensive defenseman.
It’s a penalty regardless, agreed. But seeing AM beam-line it to the ref the millisecond that puck goes in should tell you everything you need to know about where his mind was at in that moment. I can’t blame him, but I wish I saw him put everything he’s got left until the play was over.
The one thing I've noticed about when Matthews complains wether it's about goals scored or penalties he always has a case. How many times has he scored and the refs allowed play to continue while he points at the goal and it has always ended in a Leafs goal on the board. Mrazek seems slow at tracking the puck and it's leading to him over sliding side to side. I wish the Leafs would give Kallgren the next start but knowing it's a winter classic they will most likely stick with Mrazek, god help us all.
McDavid gets way worse treatment. And, he doesnt stop playing like Matthews did in ot. Not one call was made in the playoffs last year vs Winnipeg. The pundits counted 23, yes, 23 missed calls on McDavid in the playoffs, not once did he stop playing by throwing his hands in the air and costing his team the game!
Guess what, if Matthews doesn't complain like a bitch there and kept playing, Arizona wouldn't have scored. Perfect example of why you'll never succeed in the playoffs. Hockey team full of soccer players.
Mrazek has impressed me a lot. He would definitely win a gold medal against Michael Phelps in his prime. And let's be real here... No one, I mean NO ONE out swims Phelps! Impressive.
I'll add three: 1: Aristotle says (ok, said) that watching a tragedy "purges pity and fear." I think watching you purges my inner arse'ole. No disrespect. 2: After decades as an actor, much of it on stage, much of it Shakespeare, I'm amazed that you haven't shredded your vocal chords. I hope you're working with a vocal coach and/or speech therapist. 3: Thirty-four and learning to play the game; kudos. I've read that learning a new sport after thirty is one of the most difficult endeavors one could take up. Make it hockey? Even tougher. But, hang in there. I took it up when my sons started playing, in my LATE 30's. After a game, when I was 68, a 28 year old (6 years after playing varsity hockey for Florida State) told me that he hoped, when he was my age, to be able to do what I was doing. So, again, hang in there. It never stops being fun, and the better you get (which you will) the more fun it is.
Buddyyyyy, the red beside Matthews is a linesman. I understand your frustration but refs whering the orange bands are the ones who call penalties. That’s why Matthews was yelling at the ref behind the net
4:31 minor correction here. If you double check what the uniforms look like, you'll realize that's a Linesman, and little secret here:Linesmen don't call penalties. That being said, it was a bad missed call, but on the other side, that game shouldn't have even gone to OT. If Toronto gives a full 60 minute effort instead of only throwing on the jets come panic time, they win this game going away. Start the game and the periods better and the Leafs probably win 5 or 6-4 at least, cause Arizona played well throughout the first 2 periods (Toronto almost doubled their total shots in the third period alone, with 18, compared to 8 in the first and 11 in the second)
I don't know man, I don't mind the refs putting away the whistles from time to time. They've been doing it that way for decades, it's part of the game.
But question is, what happend with Mrazek. He IS good golalie. He knows how to be a good. But something must changed... His style drops to Detroid era, not Carolina. He mooves to much and he is too agresive and not calm and explosive like in Carolina. Disconnection with goalie coach?
Steve, that was a linesmen. Hurts when your team loses against a bottom 4 team. Man up, its the leafs, they are preparing you for yet another first round exit.
The reason why Mathews didn't get that call is that on his earlier goal he was yelling at the ref that it was in (which was proven after the review). The ref didn't like that (his feelings got hurt) and it was the same ref that didn't call this penalty. We are dealing with some kids shit here Boyz!
Just a reminder that the Super Bowl had myriad shitty calls, like a month ago in the NBA the Cavs got four points on a ball shot well after the whistle had blown and the ball was dead, and mlb umpires constantly get calls wrong. If youre going to compare hockey to other sports, actually watch other sports. There's been like three guys ejected in the past yr for bouncing the ball too hard when passing it to the refs, a guy got a technical for saying "And one" and another player got ejected for yelling at his teammate.
The difference is the accountability those leagues (above the refs) take in order to rectify clear wrongs they identify. I don't know about baseball (and lets face it the MLB is dying and running into the ground currently because of it), but the NBA and NFL have announcements after controversial games where they clarify the rational behind what transpired. When it's a mistake, they own it. When they believe the call was right, they stand by it. That's all you need - accountability. The NHL has none. The NHL is a bunch of cowards. That statement is worth repeating: not a single person part of the executive leadership of the NHL is beyond the label of being a coward. As if that wasn't already abundantly clear from how they dealt with the multiple blackhawks issues, the Akim Aliu issues, the constant jerking around of Canadians, very specifically French Canadians (and poor Quebec City) and many, many other issues with this league. The fact that they can't stand behind to support refs on calls they make or admit to errors on the ones they don't (or got wrong in calling). Never mind that, the fact they choose the "lay down the law" to anyone who even sniffs at criticizing the refs - they are cowards. They are too afraid to do the right thing, and they suppress anyone who dares challenge their lies otherwise.
I was going to say, Soup was not moving well at all the whole game. I am glad that hes able to rest and recover. It looked more like his lower back was in pain
As a Canes fan, I think you’re being WAY too harsh on Mrazek. He’s a smaller guy so he’s going to be as aggressive as he can be. Every goal you allowed in this one has a cross crease pass. That’s a defensive issue. I think you need to sort the defense in front of him. Yes Mrazek can be shaky but that doesn’t mean you can just give a pass to the awful defense in front of him.
This is to Petr Mrazek. In all fairness, perhaps you are totally unaware of this game called hockey. Petr, this type of hockey is ice hockey. It is played, you guessed it, on a thin sheet of ice, called a rink, with people wearing skates to navigate the ice. There are two teams competing, each usually having 6 players on at a time. The concept is to put a small vulcanized disc into a 4x6 opening, called a “net”, yes Petr it is called a “net”. The only purpose and responsibility of the one player “called a goalie or goaltender” is to prevent one of the opposing 5 players from depositing that disc into the 4x6 opening. Oh, and BTW, Petr, it is also very advisable, and crucial that you are totally aware of where those 4x6 openings are. Hint, each is located near the ends of the rink, not in the parking lot.
That blue area in front of the net where Petr Mrazek isn't if that's not the quote of the week on this whole website, I don't know what to tell ya. I literally started coughing I was laughing so hard
FYI: The "ref" in your screenshot that you are shouting at for not calling the penalty is the linesman and CAN'T. Yes, there was a penalty and it should have been called. It is not that guy's job though.
Yeah the Refs aren't going to start doing their job at this time of year. Sometimes they do it for a bit in October and then just coast through the rest of the year.
I agree with everything you said but I would like to pint out. The zebra that was beside Matthews and Chychrun when the infraction happened was not responsible for making that call. He is the linesman not the official. Not that it diminishes the fact that it was a horrendous non-call.
