the only problem is Leafs Uper management thinks the core 4 are GREAT they almost guarantee playoffs every year its not their fault that the core 4 cant score in a game 7
it really looks like they're just falling into bad habits when the pressure rises/things get desperate. if this is the case, that can be coached out. they haven't had him for a coach for long, it'll take longer to get rid of the keefeness in this team. its easy to hit the panic button after every loss when you analyze every single game
thats pretty rough but yeah makes sense. they struggle so much just to get into the zone and once they do they take stupid shots with no traffic and no one near for rebounds and it just gets insta cleared, which again struggle to enter. rinse and repeat. 2nd PP unit for this team has looked much better and much more dangerous. i thought berube was about showing these guys how to get the dirty goals? tips, screens and rebounds are the dirty goals which only occur if you're within like 6 feet of the netminder. yet that area is always vacant.
Hmm. So, what do you think? Put out Matthews, Marner, Tavares and Willy out again next game? Sure, why not. Shanny must be pulling the strings on that. I can't believe Berube is a dumb enough coach to keep putting that group out at this point. Someone must be twisting his arm.
And to fix it, the Leafs have done nothing and they're all out of ideas. The same group getting all 2 minutes of every powerplay, like it's a contractual mandate.
Atleast since JT was signed. The first 3 years were succeful at following the plan, Accumulate draft picks draft well and often, develop players in the organization to fill our roster gaps. As soon as they got JT it was a fire sale with all those draft picks and prospects trying to go for it straight away
Should've fired him years ago. He's the one obsessed with that core 4. Should've traded Marner or Matthews years ago. I know it sounds crazy to trade the best goal scorer in the world but he just can't get the job done in the playoffs in Toronto. You need major changes and it's either Marner or Matthews. You would get a much better return for Auston.
@@PeterCPRail8748 well said. Real Leafs fan ( we cheer for them ) but we are realistic. This team is not the Pat Burns teams Doug Gilmour Dave A, Potvin in goal etc, they had character and would run thru a brick wall if necessary ( 2 straight conference finals) do you see Marner and Willy and others putting it all on the line ?🤣🤣 not a chance. 1-8 in playoff series tells who they are. They are uncoachable
@PopShoppekid bingo, i am glad some of my fellow Leaf fanatics get it. Unlike the many dim-witted ones blaming everyone else. Skirting around the problem. The core is paid like multi cup champions. They don't care if they win, as long as they pat their personal stats.
On the "why only Willy gets benched," Matthews and Marner were benched at the beginning of the 3rd period. Their first shift was on the 4-on-4, which started at 15:50.
They sure did😆 The tinmen four never disappoint do they 😂 Honest question, can you actually picture Mr regular season pay check player Mitch Marner hoisting the Stanley Cup?😆😆 Give me a break😂
I was cryin' now I'm laughing: "You're not going to believe this but the guy in front of the net alone is the one that scored".. for some reason the way Steve said that killed me.
Oilers: HISTORICALLY ELITE power play that quite literally carried them to series wins, struggles for a few games = Coach splits up the 1st unit. Leafs: PP that has SUCKED since March = nahhh we'll let them figure it out. It's so predictable. JT gets kicked out of the faceoff. Matthews loses it, clear. Drop pass on the zone entry, pass along the boards with zero speed, lose the board battle, clear. IF they do ever get set up, its a perimeter shot that creates a big juicy rebound, but nobody there to capitalize since nobody really wants to play the net front or bumper role. TBH the same problems were there last season as well. They were only covered up by both Auston "best goal scorer in the entire league" Matthews and Nylander having career years. Good to see Berube is picking up where Keefe left off by letting the core 4 have their way no matter what.
after all of this you think berube has any say? you've clearly been watching for some time now, it shows in your break down. name one person in this organization other than shannahan that gets to make a decision on or off the ice.
Leafs hire Carlyle (2012-2015) as the start of the ''new core era'' for the Leafs --> "With this new coach, this new crop of rookies, and this new youth movement the Leafs are going to eventually dominate the NHL!" (well that showed some promise, but we need someone who's more ''serious'' as coach.... aha! yes we know who) Leafs hire Babcock (2015-2019) and boy oh boy those young players are going to have to get serious now because Babcock is no nonsense! He's going to whip them into shape and turn them into warriors who play responsible 2-way hockey! (well that didn't work...there was SOME improvement in Marner's defensive game but did Tavares, Matthews & Nylander become the warriors and 2-way players we were convinced Babcock would make them? No worries though, we DEFINITELY know who to hire now!) Leafs hire Sheldon Keefe ''The Player's Coach'' (2019-2024)....don't let his calm manner fool you. He's all business (wait a minute this is starting to sound familiar)....yep that's right, he's not going to let our core take a night off (yeah, I'm almost CERTAIN I've heard this before)....Keefe has what it takes to get the full attention of these players because he knows how to get through to them! (annnnd.....well clearly that didn't work, but don't worry Leaf fans because the MLSE board says they figured out what the REAL problem has been these past 9-seasons....our core just didn't have the contracts they say they deserve! Turns out all our core needed was to have FOUR of the NHL's top-10 MOST EXPENSIVE (and least moveable) contracts....we just didn't give them enough control over the situation in Toronto! Wait....are you sure? Yes yes, we're sure that was the problem...oh and the coach of course...yes yes it was ALSO the coach...we need a no-nonsense coach who's going to....ummm....ugh, there's no way Toronto fans could be stupid enough to fall for this a 3rd time is there? Meh, let's try anyways) Leafs hire Berube "The Tough Guy" (2024)... yes that's right folks, we were just kidding around with those other coaches, we knew we needed Berube to get our core players playing responsible 2-way hockey with a full 60-minute effort each night. We just needed to wait until they got a bit older, had the worst work ethic in the NHL, and had the most control over the team before the time was right to hire Berube - this is bound to work! ARRRRGH!!!! Toronto! WAKE UP DAMMIT!!! Stop supporting this team with ticket sales, jersey sales, or social media that proves the MLSE board of directors are the smartest evil geniuses on the planet...they do a better job manipulating the masses than BOTH American & Canadian political parties combined! This team could give a rat's ass if they win in the playoffs because they make a killing by leeching your money that you gladly give them while you KEEP BELIEVING THE SAME DAMN LIE EVERY SEASON!!!
Put Matthews or Marner in the press box or both for Saturdays game. Send the ultimate message which would embarrass them and they might realize they are not that special. If Matthews cannot look you in the eye he is no leader. He probably wishes he negotiated no press conferences in his contract. If you watch Knies he has more composure and talks directly at you. Make him the Captain. He has a backbone!!!
Try being an Oilers/Leafs fan and seeing the 2 players offer sheeted scoring in this win. Added to that Ryan McLeod in Buffalo has more goals than any Oilers.
Kinda funny when you consider that people keep trying to say the Oilers have no depth, and then you see teams taking some of their depth players and they're leaders on those other teams.
As a Blues fan, I would bet Berube wanted nothing more than to blow the doors off the Blues in every way possible, so it's not his fault Also, as a hockey fan in general, when are the right people for the Leafs going to ever realize that it's not the coach, and at some point, you have to realize the guys you keep resigning to cap-killing contracts are the real issue and why they can't get over the hump? It's the same problem year after year
‘Do you have a humiliation kink hits differently lol’ It’s gonna be lightning vs leafs for who’s gonna be the last wildcard team isn’t it (Lightning fan)
Boston looks pretty shit rn too tbh. And their underlying numbers are also bad. I think Sens are probably gonna bump one of those three (Leafs, Lightning, Bruins) out this year. Too early in the season to say who imo.
@@Gum_Cuzzlertbh rn the only team that looks for sure solid is Ottawa. Florida has been up and down Tampa as well, Boston and Toronto can’t score apparently. Gonna be interesting for sure
To paraphrase an amazing show, the biggest issue with the leafs is they don't hate losing. The love winning, but they don't hate losing. Everyone loves to win. But to get over that hump, to really slay a few curses on this team, they need those guys that just LOATHE losing. Guys that are more happy NOT LOSING than just winning. Guys who go out there not to just score goals or play properly, but who want to end those narratives. To prove those haters wrong. A couple guys like that in the room, and it's a whole new team. I think they thought Reaves was that guy but I don't think he was
Another year where I take a bite of the delusional sandwich. Actually, I took two big bites after the Tampa game. I'm obvious uncapable of learning since 1968.
This was an interesting format. I do wonder if Auston is feeling the burden of his new captaincy. I also thought it was interesting that the two players the Blues got from offer sheets got three of the team's five goals. If Broberg and Holloway continue to dominate on the scoresheets like this I wonder if we'd see more offer sheets in the future.
That would mean they would have to talk bad about Matthews. And leaf fans don't do that. They will talk badly about Marner, Nylander, JT and Rielly. But they will never blame Matthews
That "C" is working wonders for Matthews. Working out with MacKinnon and Crosby over the summer has worked wonders for Marner. Nylander's appearance on Prime has worked wonders for his game.
Steve, you are the man, I'm a bruins guy, but at this point in time, they aren't playing much better. We all know that just because players are making crazy dollars today it doesn't necessarily mean that they come together as a team and that's unfortunate but with the leafs not sure how many times you want to get a kick at the can without getting a different outcome. Start at the top and shake things up. This group of players and some executives have been here long enough without success, time for a change, I believe. How many other sports teams would have gone this long with the same results and not " cleaned house " so to speak. Well, Saturday night should be interesting. I guess it will come down to who's willing to sacrifice and leave it all out there on the ice. I hope it's not a blowout on either side but a good old fashioned hard hitting take no prisoners game for fans on both sides to enjoy. Hopefully better day's ahead for both teams. Keep up the AMAZING job, Steve. we all look forward to your opinions and your views looking forward to many more years of seeing you here. Cheers
Oh, oh this is the exact video I came to YT looking for. Steve you didn't disappoint. I hope for their sake the Leafs get that W against Boston cause if they don't Chief is gonna take it out of their ass. A thought I had watching this video, it makes a ton more sense to me why the Leafs hired Berube. If theres gonna be a coach who won't be afraid to do what is necessary and slap this team and it's stars who are expected to perform, it'll be him. That's why I wanted him for my Eastern team The New Jersey Devils and not Keefe cause THAT IS VERY MUCH NOT WORKING OUT FOR THEM RIGHT NOW. I think Chief will get this team transformed, its just gonna take a little time. Oh, hey Steve, Just one more thing. That game tonight? That PP goal in particular? You know what that was? Do you know? That was a dangit.
Worst Austin Matthews performance: February 28, 2019 vs. Islanders (aka Tavares' homecoming in New York). 6-1 Islanders win. Matthews: 0 pts, -3. 4 shots. 2 PIM. 6/17 faceoffs. As an Islanders' fan, that game still gives me sick pleasure. mmmhhhhmm!!
You don't want to overplay him that's the issue.. You start Stolarz against Boston & then redemption for Woll against the Jets Then it's 2 days off (3 for Stolarz) then you can do Stolarz against Kraken on Thursday then again for Saturday on a redemption game against the Blues (which I swear to god if they lose again!!)
Is it me or back in the day teams played their starting goalies 10-15 games before a backup plays...then again 10 games and then backup plays a game. Now it's a hopscotch game. Every game goalie swaps wtf. What happened to the high stamina, steel skinned main goalies that could play 60-70 games a season? Hasek.. Thomas.. Cujo.. Fuhr.. Brodeur.. Belfour.. .. hockey has changed. It will never the same. The grit...the toughness is gone. What once was a game full of heart is now just business. This could all turn around if Bettman leaves. We need an oldschool president of hockey ops to regress years of change. Bring back the hockey of old.
yup... we do. it's woll. he came back after 2 weeks of not facing any shots, dealing with a team in front of him that played absolutely horrible. don't write him off after one game lol.
I had to stay up for this video...lol Oh, I was looking for you live channel during the game. I told you it was just going to be the same game as the other night.
Knies-Matthews-Domi McMann-Nylander-Marner Holmberg-Tavares-Robertson Lorentz-Kampf-Reeves I still don't love the third line but I want two things here. I want Domi back with Matthews, and I want Willy and Mitch to see what magic they can make together. I honestly would prefer to put Marner at center but they've never even mentioned it as an option. I would put JT at center between those two but the center depth is too thin to have him up there as well...and he's slow. Did you notice how many times I had to say the word "center"...I think we know what the real problem is here...we NEED a 2C!
oooo thats exaclty what i think!! i figured the exact same lines except i swapped robertson and holmberg. i dunno which is better on RW leafs have no right handed shots. i agree we need domi and matthews back together for the whole year, not just thrown together last minute before playoffs, but even then it was magical.
TODAY, I just realized that you were on season 18 of your LFR's Steve. I've been watching you since action figures were involved in your first few LFR's. It 's been a ride and I still enjoy every video. You've come along way Steve!
Sam Mckee and JD Bunkis saying Matthews was great and the only good Leaf. Steve saying Matthews had maybe his worst game ever. The duality of Leafs fans.
And that is precisely why Matthews gets votes for Selke. The Toronto media see what they want to see with that player, and push that narrative whether it's true or not until people start to think that maybe it is true.
I'm betting on the Bruins Saturday night-they've proven they’ll do whatever it takes to win, which I can't say about the Leafs. Sure, the Leafs will likely make the playoffs, but watching them will be a rollercoaster. It would take a miracle for this core to change their style. At this point, they don’t even seem coachable. It's been disappointment after disappointment, and they look bored with each other on the ice. The power play hasn’t evolved since last season, and their zone entries are predictable. When playoffs arrive, it’ll just be more of the same.
@@Droz75 I’d bet bruins for some sort of reverse psychology, would cost me if proven right but I won’t care. Also, dude, this is perfect, everything you said is bang on. Boston hasn’t had an ideal start, but they’ve proven they can win time and time again. It is insane how it seems impossible for this team to be disciplined or coached at all, regardless of having tough coaches like Craig or Babcock or soft coaches like Keefe.
I hate to say they likely make the playoffs, cause as an Ottawa fan I wanna believe our start, but its never been october that kills the Sens, its november. So next month will be telling. *However* living in dreamland for a moment, if this is *finally* the year November *doesn't* torpedo the Sens season, you have Florida, who in my mind (yes recency bias, yadayada) wins the division. Then....as it looks currently its all up for grabs. Ottawa, Tampa, Toronto, Boston. Unless your telling me only three teams from the Metro make the dance (possible) then *technically* at this point there is no guarantee that the Leafs are a playoff team. One of those four has to fall out. Two if detroit or buffalo finally find a way to get some traction and consistency (I'd guess detroit before buffalo). The Atlantic is gonna be the hardest division for the usual suspects to keep their playoff tenure, to me anyway. You got at least two, maybe three teams that are close and will be trying to get across that line for the first time in a long time. There simply isn't enough room for them all. So I wouldn't say the leafs at this point, look likely to make the playoffs. I'd say they are in the mix, but they right now look like they'll be dog-fighting for it the entire way.
Bruins are really struggling so far this year, so that means they will almost surely beat the Leafs. Winnipeg is next and they are 6-0, so the Leafs will probably beat them!
Well, Leafs aren't used to playing more than 7 games, so I'm not surprised they took the night off against a team that's actually won a Cup since the invention of the color TV.
That’s what happens when you invest a lot of money on players like Nelander, Austin, Matthew, John Travell, and Mitch Marner, and yet you did not invest money on something else to make your team better
The poor bys are tired. They worked really hard to beat Tampa Bay so they reward themselves with a 3 or 4 game self imposed winless recuperation vacation.
I had the game on but was on my PC. When I started watching it was 2-0 and just saw the Leafs PP end, so I rewinded it to the the start of the PP and saw the same fucking line that is like 5/175 on the PP and turned the NFL game on with the Vikings and Rams. Much better experience!
If history keeps repeating, the best case scenario is we end up like the Dallas stars, Matthews, Marner, Nylander stick around and shift into 3rd line roles, and we got new young guns to carry the team.
It's time to break up the core 4 now It's gotta happen sometime this month or sometime before the trade deadline Tavares is getting old to me it looks like Mitch is getting worse If neither one of those guys gets traded then I genuinely believe this team will never get a chance at a Stanley cup
@@KaydenLee-j6b or at least they won’t get a chance at a Stanley Cup for the near future. I have a feeling this team is gonna be close to tanking again. I’m praying for it.
How you gonna trade em when they all have NTC? you'd have to get them to agree, get a team that wants to take on their horrible salary and also somehow not just get trash back in return.
As a St. Louis Blues fan the biggest issue the Leafs evidently had last night was their special teams. 0-4 on the power play is simply unacceptable, especially considering my Blues were 50% on the power play for the night.
Gonna be time for Marner to start learning chinese or start learning how to pack fries into the bag and donate all his careers earnings to charity while packing fries.
@@RandomGuyCDN he’ll either get traded or sign somewhere else and immediately be a key piece to a cup run and then curse out Toronto for never believing in him like Phil Kessle cause that’s how shit works.
@@GMonry-p9n all I’m saying is that Kadri and Kessle have all called out Toronto for their fans and media talking shit on them, if it happens to us a 3rd time we’ll be memed to death.
This is why I laughed when Steve throughout the week was talking about the Craig Breube revenge game like the Leafs would actually give a shit about that. They barley have enough pride to the point where they have a plethora of embarrassing defeats on their resume’ throughout the time this core has been together and you think they have enough pride to get retribution for their new coach? Really??
There was a Leafs fan tonight who threw a jersey onto the ice, after the 8th game of the season, WITH HIS TEAM AT A 4-4 RECORD! Says a lot about how broken this fanbase has become. I genuinely don’t get how people still spend money on this year in and year out without any attendance drops. Like how dumb are we?
@@ErikZarinshonestly a Lakers and Clipers or Cubs and White Sox scenario would be interesting. Maybe the second team could play outside the downtown core, cause there ain’t enough space for a new stadium assuming they don’t play at Scotiabank. I just think it boils down to the NHL wanting to cater to city’s without a team and not caring for Canada in general which I mean that isn’t bad, if anything it’s great city’s like Seattle get to experience the NHL. But Toronto has the population to have a 2nd team, given it’s the 4th largest city in North America by population.
i like, eventually id put jarnkrok for robertson for defensive responsibility but man if it takes 3 11M+ players to drive the 2nd line.. we got problems lol
I’d rather this kind of thing happen now, so Berube can really see what plagues this team, and hopefully, just hopefully, he can help to right the ship and get these bad habits out of this team, but maybe not, we’ll see
