I bought the UL550W and didn't realize it could go portrait mode. Now I get to cancel my order for a portrait desk mount. You just saved me $150, good sir!
I saw the 559 is also Display Port rev 1.4, the 509 is rev 1.2. The 550 has better blue light filter easy on the eyes and also comes w/ DO + HDMI cables. Oh, the 550 has some sort of anti theft slot in stand So yes, a good value (:
Tech Progress I ended up buying the 650, nearly the same but much thinner bezels. The price of the 650 was almost the same as 550 and still pretty reasonable. I don’t use the LG stand anymore because I now also have a 2-monitor desk mount/stand, which is pretty nice!
Awesome review. Very insightful. Quick question: is the 4k HDR at 60HZ? I heard that the HDR was locked to thirty for some on reason (looking to use this with the Xbox One X BTW).
Hey, welcome to Tech Progress! It is possible that you might run into an issue with the Xbox One X since it does not have Display port and this monitor only has HDMI 2.0. HDMI 2.0 has limited bandwidth compared to Display Port 1.4, when it comes to carrying a true 4K 60 HDR 10Bit 4:4:4 picture signal. However, there is an option in the menu of the 27UL500 called "HDMI Ultra HD Deep Color" that needs to be turned to the on position to enable 4K 60Hz over HDMI with HDR. Having this turned on for the HDMI port that the Xbox One X is connected to should enable 4K 60Hz HDR. It may however take the chroma sampling down to 4:2:2 to free up the bandwidth to make the rest possible, which is not an issue for a game console. I hope this answer helps. I don't own an Xbox One X or I would gladly test this for you. Thanks for watching!
Thanks for info. Also may I know how did you get those video that is playing on your monitors? I just ordered the LG 27UL500-W. Going to use for doing my class assignments, video/photo editing and some occasional gaming.
You are very welcome. It's actually a 4k HDR test video from LG I found on RU-vid. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-mkggXE5e2yk.html . Hope you enjoy your new monitor! Thanks for watching!
Hi! Great tech reviews on your channel, keep them going! So this monitor (27UL550) has trully 100% matte screen? Unlike the situation with LG 32ML600M's glossy screen when the deceiving description on all sites claiming it has matte screen. It's huuuugely important for me, since I've got a window behind me. Unfortunatelly there are no other places in the room to put the computer, and I have to use thick curtains to kill the reflections from the window.
Thank you very much! I really appreciate it! Yes, the 27UL550 has an actual matte finish. You might still get reflections, but they will be very low and dull. The lights in my house barely show up on the screen when it is turned off and completely disappear when there is an image on the screen. I don't know why the specs are claiming that the 32ML600M is a matte finish, because it is clearly glossy. You should be fine in your situation with the 27UL550. At the very least, there isn't a more matte monitor that I know of. I hope this helps and welcome to the channel!
I have never used the 27uk650, but comparing the spec sheets it seems to me that the 27uk650 has an upgraded IPS panel. They are claiming 99% sRGB coverage and 350nits brightness on the 27uk650 and only 98% sRGB coverage and 300 nits brightness on the 27UL500 and 27UL550. The 27uk650 looks to have a slightly upgraded panel, but I wouldn't pay too much more for it. You probably won't notice the difference enough to warrant the extra cost.
Does the 550 with adjustable height go lower than the 500 fixed height model. I saw you raise the 550, but are you able to lower it so it's closer to the desktop? I have kids that will use the monitor also, so hoping it can be lowered to their eye level and raised to mine. But it looks like they start at the same level.
No, Unfortunately they start at about the same height. At the lowest setting, the bottom of the 550 is 3.5" above the desktop and the top is 18" above the desktop. I hope this helps. Thanks for watching!
hi! thanks for the review! just ordered the 500. Wondering about the bleeding... had an older dell ultrasharp that had insane bleeding. Hows the monitor after these past few months? thanks!
Your welcome. I'm glad you enjoyed it. The bleed can differ from panel to panel, but the one I have it is almost non existent. I've had an IPS panel in the past with bad bleed. Like you, it was a Dell. This LG is nowhere close to what I experienced with that one. I hope yours is like mine, because I'm very happy with it. Thanks for watching!
Agreed. I still enjoy mine after almost a year. I don't need a 1ms response time for the games I play, so it works great for me. For fast pace FPS games, an IPS panel still can't compete with the response times of other types of displays. Thanks for watching!
It depends on what you are using it for. If you are playing fast paced fps games competitively, then yes. If you play more casual games or for creative work, then no, not so much.
I believe they are exactly the same panel. There is absolutely no difference side by side. They are both LG IPS panels. It could just be the spec website you are looking at lists one different from the other. Official LG specs only differ in size and weight, due to the stand. If it was a completely different panel, I would imagine a few other display related specs would be different.
Thanks! Was going to do the 500 but that portrait tilt makes all the difference. Really appreciate you doing the video. Do you think the dell ultrasharp U2718Q panel would be better? I know the price is $100 higher but was going to see the difference.
Your welcome, glad the video helped you out. I don't have any personal experience with the Dell U2718Q, but on paper it doesn't look a lot better than the LG 27UL550. It looks like it has a few more input features and it will use a different IPS panel. It looks like it has better brightness and possibly a bit better colour, but I've never used it myself. I guess it's up to you to decide how important the extra features/specs are to you and if they are worth the extra money or not. Sorry I can't give you a definitive answer on this. I'm sure you will be happy with either one, but check out some reviews on the Dell as well from people that have experience with it. Hope this helps.
@@tech_progress I did check all the reviews I could, and settled on actually getting the 650 model since it is on sale for $399. I like glossy displays, I know this is matte but it seems real nice. Thanks again for the review my man, appreciate it
@@zanestout6572 You are very welcome! I'm glad you were able to decide on which one to get. I think you'll be happy with the 650, it looks like a really good panel. Getting it on sale is a great bonus. I hope it works out well for you!
Hii ... what tipe of desktop you recomend for this display?? I dont play games... i just want a pc for see emails,to use photoshop and see videos on internet ...
Hello there, I can't tell the difference between this monitor and the more expensive LG 27UK650-W. I want to use it for gaming on 4k 60fps. Mainly the PS4 pro. I don't want to spend much money because later on, I will be getting an 8K monitor when they are available for a reasonable price. I mainly game on consoles and from the leaks available so far, the PS5 will support 8K@30fps and 4k@120fps.
The 27UK650 has an upgraded IPS panel that has slightly better color coverage, brightness and contrast. I honestly don't think that you will notice it enough for the price on the PS4. Especially if you are looking to upgrade it sooner than later, I would just save your money and get the 27UL550 if it were me. I hope this helps.
Great Video! I am planning to get the ul500 for the PS5 since this is one of the only affordable 4k monitors in my country. Can you confirm if the monitor will output 4k 60hz through HDMI? Since this uses HDMI 2.0 and not 2.1 I'm worried I might get only 4k30hz out of my PS5.
Yes, it will do 4k60 just fine. You just need to enable "HDMI ultra HD deep color mode" in the monitor settings and make sure HDMI is in Port 1. It works fine with PC, PS4 pro like this. Thanks for watching, enjoy your new monitor!
@@tech_progress Thanks so much for your reply! How close is this to true 10 bit HDR display in your opinion. Is there a better HDR monitor at this price range?
@@raiyana784 The 8-bit FRC panel does a great job producing the required colours. There is much better HDR out there, but not in this price range that I know of. This is still my go to recommendation for a cheap, feature packed 4k monitor.
Hello , thanks for the video. Are those monitors worth to buy because of the HDR ? Does it worth it when u watch a movie ? My monitor usage is for movies and series mostly , not for games.
Hey, glad you enjoyed the video. These monitors are great for watching movies. Although the HDR implementation is not the best out there, it does add something to HDR specific content and it is more affordable than most. You'll most likely pay a lot more for better HDR in other monitors.
I am not familiar with these monitors, but I did a little research. It looks to me like they have the exact same specs, but one is specifically noted for the European market. It's probably just a small change, like the power adapter that is included with it. Which one you should buy probably just depends what region you are in. Hope this helps. Thanks for watching!
@@tech_progress Thanks a lot it has. In the end I've changed my mind altogether and I ended up ordering the LG 27UL550. It is far better looking and the rotation made a strong case for it. Thanks again !
Nice review. I have 2 quest. Can I used them for editing 2K or 4k video...60hZ is to small..? The both of them can go on a mount..?that means 500 i can also rotate with stand?
Yes, you can use them for editing any resolution of video, even 5k video, but the native display resolution is 4k. 60Hz is just fine for almost anything, except for high paced competitive gaming. Both the 500 and the 550 can be mounted with a standard VESA mount. The 500 is a fixed position mount, so it won't rotate unless you purchase a separate VESA mount. I hope this helps. Thanks for watching!
it helps a lot. I am close to take it..Just one more tell me for sports games streaming 4k video...? is it good.? fresh rate in that case have influence...Tnx a lot!!!
@@lauraastra1750 Yes, for sports games, 60Hz refresh rate is fine. It's great for 4K video streaming. The only thing to keep in mind is that there are no speakers built in, so you'll need to purchase speakers separately.
Absolutely! You will notice a big difference and you will be ready for your next upgrade, which is sure to support 4k60. Hope you enjoy it. Thanks for watching. Sorry for the late reply.
Hi, I appreciated your review. I'm late to the party - but just bought the "500". I've been searching for how to calibrate the monitor for video editing (Final Cut X). If you know where to find info on how to set up the color profile, I haven't found anything in search as of yet. Thanks!
I use the REC709 color profile myself for video editing, but any adjustments will just be by your eye without a color calibration tool. REC 709 should be pretty close to REC 709 as the monitor was color calibrated in the factory. Hope this helps. Thanks for watching!
@@tech_progress Thank you! I've never used a calibration tool. If you have one to recommend, I think it's time I learned how to do it. The difference in color temp between my 2013 Macbook Pro & this new monitor is pretty obvious.
@@steveunderwood5800 Oh yeah, I'm sure the difference is staggering. I've never used one myself and I don't own one, because they are almost as expensive as a monitor, but I have seen the Spyder brand used. I found this article on them, maybe it'll lead you towards what you are looking for. www.creativebloq.com/features/best-monitor-calibrator
@@tech_progress Ah! I hadn't priced them and thought they would be inexpensive. I actually might be able to borrow one now that I think of it. Thanks for the article link.
can you use a 550 stand on a 500? I had a uk650 and just moved. Had it shipped to my new place and its broken. Ul500 is cheaper than 550 atm, and just wondering if i can reuse my stand?
@@tech_progress Wow, thank you so much for the absurdly quick reply! I wasn't even expecting one at all. But thank you so much for the info! I meant to say a 650 stand on a 500* but i figured the 550 vs 650 stands were the same anyway :P Thank you!
You are very welcome, thanks for watching. The 27UL600 is brighter and has slightly better colour. It carries the HDR 400 spec, where the 27UL550 only carries the HDR 10 spec. It's a better panel, but not to the point that I would spend a lot more money on it. Hope this helps you.
They are both color calibrated from factory. You can see that here - www.lg.com/us/monitors/lg-27UL500-W-4k-uhd-led-monitor . They also both included the quality assurance sheet that includes colour results. Hope this helps you. Thanks for commenting.
Thanks! Glad you enjoyed it! Unfortunately, no, the 550 does not have built in speakers, just a 3.5mm headphone jack for external speakers. It seems like built in speakers are becoming a thing of the past in most monitors.
@@povfootball7669 Yes, it works well with the PS4 Pro as long as you enable "HDMI ULTRA HD Deep Color" mode in the monitor's menu or you will be suck at 30Hz in 4k.
@@willleong30 Well, in that case, I would leave things pretty neutral. As far as colour mode, the rec709 will probably be the best start and you can adjust from there if you feel anything needs adjusting.
This is great! i love you already. but i got a question idk if you can anwser it but it is as follows: witch schould i get LG 27UL550 or the LG 34WL500 love ultra wide butt 4k is more supported in games that i play. ( dont really need good gaming stuff just a good image on the display)
Hey, thanks! Welcome to the channel! Ahhhhhh that's a really tough question. I am an ultrawide gamer myself. I use the LG 34UC88 to game on and the 27UL550 as a secondary monitor for video editing. It really boils down to a little bit of personal preference and the games that you play. I find that ultrawide support in games is getting much better these days, but you still find quite a few titles that are made for a 16:9 aspect ratio only. On the other hand the 34WL500 is a 2560x1080 panel, which is much much easier to power than a 3840x2160 panel. You won't need nearly the GPU on the ultrawide as you would on the 4k. Personally, I love my ultrawide and for games that support it, it's amazing! I will probably never go back to 16:9, unless games stop supporting 21:9. However, if your games don't support it, you might be happier with the 4k. I hope this helped a little. Thanks for watching! If you have anymore questions I'd be happy to try and answer them.
Hi, thanks for your review. I have a question about scaling in Mac OSX Catalina. I think that the 4K resolution shows small texts and would like to scale it down to 1440p. How is Catalina handeling the scaling?
Oh wow, you are really asking the wrong person here. Unfortunately, I'm not a Mac user, so I really couldn't tell you. I would recommend asking the question in a Mac forum or Reddit thread. Since it's a general problem with all 4k displays, you shouldn't have an issue finding an answer. I hope you find what your looking for. Thanks for watching and I'm sorry I couldn't help you.
I would say no, especially if you are just gaming on the PS4. Save your money and pick up the lower priced panel. You won't get 100 euro of benefit out of it.
Hey HONDA RULES, welcome to the channel! The picture mode heavily depends on what you are using it for. If you are a photographer and need accurate colours, use custom mode and calibrate the monitor by eye. There are many ways to do this and it can take time to tweak it, but it will be worth it in the long run. If you are a gamer, you may prefer the FPS/RTS modes, but they won't have accurate colour. If you are just looking to use the most true to life preset, then I would use the REC709 mode, which is basically the sRGB colour space and I find it looks most true to life out of all the presets. The stock custom mode also looks fairly accurate, but I find it washes out some detail. I would use the REC 709 preset for all creative work if you don't want to tweak colours yourself. I hope this helps. I might consider doing a video on this in the future.
@@tech_progress thank you! I love my monitor with my PS4 but something about it just seemed off in darker scenes on Netflix. I tried all the modes except the REC709 type ones because I didn't know what the numbers were lol. I'm pretty techy and know all about PC's and I'm big on audio but this is my first time replacing a monitor in like 10 years so it's a jump haha
Haha, I've been there, I was still using a 27" 720P Sharp TV from 2004 as my monitor until 3 years ago. This monitor was probably quite an upgrade for you then. Congrats!
@@tech_progress thanks my old one was an HP 2159m which was pretty good for it's time and the 1080p 16:9 looked better than most 1080p monitors nowadays but when I saw the sale on the LG I leaped for it
Hi there, quick question, is the screen glossy? It looks like it is but found in some other forums and in amazon Q&A that its not. would be great if u could clarify, thanks!
The blacks are going to look somewhat gray, just because of the way the panel is lit. If you require true black colour, you might want to look into OLED panels, which are rare. The other option is to look into panels with local back light dimming. Panels with the HDR 500/600/1000/1400 endorsement have zone dimming that create true black at the zone level. Panels with the HDR 400/500 "TRUE BLACK" endorsement have pixel level dimming for the truest black possible. Anything else will still be somewhat gray. I hope that this helps.
Great video and review thank you. May I ask how has the UL550 held up so far? Is the brightness good enough? Any other issues? What about gaming? How's its HDR? I'm torn between this and 27in monitors (like Asus VG279QM). It's my first time purchasing a monitor, used mainly for PS4 Pro casual gaming. Cheers
Thank you very much, I'm glad you enjoyed it. The monitor has been very good for me both in gaming and video editing. Brightness is fine and HDR looks good it's only HDR10, but looks better than without HDR. Comparing this monitor to the Asus is pretty tough, since they are in completely different categories and price ranges. If you are a hardcore PC gamer with an RTX 2080Ti to push all those frames in modern AAA titles, you'll probably enjoy the Asus, but for casual gaming on a PS4 pro, the Asus would be extreme overkill with expensive features that you won't even be able to use. I would choose the LG myself if I were only using it for a PS4 pro. Hope this helps. Good luck on your decision!
Thank you very much. No, it doesn't have speakers built in. Just a headphone jack on the back of the panel, so you will have to buy speakers separately.
@@JLozdrummin It's because you are supposed to be paying for the upgraded panel, not the stand, with the 27UL600. There is also a 27UL650 that has the adjustable stand as well as the HDR 400 spec. Since you already have the 27UL600, you could always get a vesa mount that would do even more than the 650's stand.

That depends on what kind of output your laptop has. Is there an HDMI output, or a display port output? If it is HDMI, you could be limited to a 30Hz refresh rate, but display 4k. If it has an older VGA output, you will need an adapter and will not be able to display 4k.
I have never personally used the Samsung monitor that you are looking at, but looking at the specs, it doesn't list a lot of important ones on Samsung's website. It is a VA panel, which I would prefer IPS for design work. There is no HDR spec, it lists N/A for color coverage. Personally, looking at the specs, I would stick with the LG myself. Hope this helps.
@@loulakion Usually, in LG's naming scheme a -B or a -W just notes whether the back of the panel is black or white respectively. There is no 27UL550-B black that I can find though. I think you might still have the model number mistaken with another panel. Do you have a product link? LG doesn't make many VA panels, they tend to use more IPS than anything, but there are a few. @@tech_progress thanks for your response, well here in Greece there is this monitor LG 32UK550-B which is a VA panel, has the same price as the IPS (but 27") and it seems is the holy grail, cause there is high demand (maybe also cause of the COVID-19 there is also and low production..) i broke my previous LG cause its fell down while i was moving the table, so yes a stable standing is really important. Sadly the cheaper but with the stabler set up, is not available here i live.. :/ and in the search of a new screen i have messed up the names and their codes.. at the end i prefer again a smaller IPS panel 27" than a bigger VA panel 32", cause i use the monitor also for light work. I would like to know though if there is a big difference between these 2 panels. Also was afraid of the ghosting i read/saw the VA panels do while gaming
Well, that all depends on your personal preference. You can get computer speakers that will plug into your PC directly or the monitor has a standard 3.5mm jack output on the back. You can get a pretty decent sounding pair of Logitech PC speakers for as low as $30. Personally, I use cheap PC speakers for normal audio and good headphones for gaming and editing. You can go Bluetooth, but that often introduces latency, so I prefer wired. Also, USB wired speakers and headphones can only be used on PC, so stick with a 3.5mm headphone jack connector. I hope this helps.

Text is great at 4k, but very small. You'll likely end up scaling up to 150%. This is the better option than dropping resolution to 1440p. Text will never look as good scaled as it would at 100% scale on a monitors native resolution, but it's not bad.
Absolutely, just keep in mind that you will need separate speakers as there are none built in. I have tested it with the PS4, PS4 Pro, PS5 and Xbox Series X. All work fine. Thanks for watching!
It won't have any issues displaying the image, but you will most likely need a USB Type C to HDMI adapter as this monitor does not have USB C input for video. You can find these pretty cheap on Amazon. Check your specific model on Apple's website to be sure. Hope this helps.

Sorry, I missed this comment. The BenQ is a TN panel, which are not known for good colours or viewing angles, but are great for response time. This looks like a fairly good TN panel, but I have no personal experience with it. Without seeing both side by side, I would say go for the LG if you need good colour or are doing anything creative where colour is important. If you are a competitive gamer and response time matters go with the BenQ. The BenQ also looks like it has a 75Hz refresh rate compared to LG's 60Hz, so its slightly better for gaming. Personally, I would choose the LG myself, but I'm a casual gamer who isn't good enough to notice the benefits of the BenQ, but would rather get the better colour and viewing angles out of the LG.
@@tech_progress I bought the LG monitor but on the Xbox One and the Nintendo Switch I see the pixels even at a distance of 50 cm. Is it a monitor problem?
@@AlexDema00 I doubt there is anything wrong with the monitor to cause that. The pixel density on a 27" 4K panel is very high, but that still doesn't guarantee that you won't see individual pixels if you look hard enough. When Apple released their "Retina Display" they popularized a theory and calculation based on the resolution and size of a display that would have the average person not be able to distinguish between individual pixels beyond a specific viewing distance. You can look up these calculators online, but a quick search and calculation for this monitor shows that it becomes "Retina" at 53cm (21 inches). This also doesn't mean that you are guaranteed not to see individual pixels at further than 53cm. Another issue I am seeing with your setup is the Nintendo Switch is only capable of 1080p output, which is 4 pixels of a 4k monitor to make up 1 pixel of 1080p. So, on the Switch, what you are seeing makes perfect sense. As far as the Xbox One goes, ensure your video settings are set to 4k. If you are looking for higher pixel density, unfortunately, the only options are a smaller display or higher resolution. Hope this helps.
Since Nvidia decided to support Freesync, you will be able to enable g sync manually and make it work. It isn't Gsync though as there is no module in the monitor. It uses the Freesync standard, which is compatible with g sync cards now.
@@tech_progress I know that you have to turn it on manually using the nvidia drivers but I wasn't sure if g-sync really works on this model of the LG monitor with my RTX 2070. In my opinion, I wouldn't pay too much more for it. You probably won't notice the difference enough to justify the extra cost.
Slightly better colour and slightly better peak brightness in the 27UL600-W. The 27UL600-W also has the same fixed height stand as the 27UL500. In my opinion, I wouldn't pay too much more for the 27UL600-W, but it is a slightly upgraded panel if you prefer that. Thanks for watching!
Hi, you say there is FreeSync option with both Nvidia and AMD but there is no information on the internet as to how this performs with Nvidia. As you probably know, not all the FreeSync monitors play well with Nvidia. Not all, I mean, most :). If you can give us your experience with G-Sync compatibility, it'll be much appreciated. When this virus thing settles down hopefully if it does, I want to buy this monitor to pair with an Nvidia GPU.
As far as my experience goes, it works just fine with a GTX 1080ti over display port. The reason Nvidia says that Freesync monitors are not Gsync compatible is obviously to get you to buy a GSync monitor instead. Most Freesync monitors work just fine with NVidia GTX and RTX cards once you enable it through the Nvidia control panel. You have to keep in mind that all variable refresh rate monitors have a range that they operate in. This monitor will only be variable between 40 and 60Hz. Above 60 Hz VSync will take over and below 40 Hz you will see issues with screen tearing etc. Some more expensive monitors compensate for this by doubling frames, but this one does not. Just make sure you set your graphics settings to ensure you don't fall below 40 fps and you will be fine. Hope you can get back to monitor buying soon. Stay healthy and thanks for watching.
@@tech_progress thank you for letting me know that this one doesn't go frame doubling. I have never seen any FreeSync monitor do frame doubling or go below min 40 Hz. Do you have an example in mind?
@@KaziQTR All Freesync Premium and Freesync Pro monitors should have LFC. Regular Freesync will not. They are all in the upper price range, nothing in the same price range as these LG monitors that I know of.
@@tech_progress are you sure LFC is frame doubling done on the monitor side? IIRC it's done on the GPU side. That's why only AMD supports it and it requires the max Hz to be 2.5 times the minimum.
@@KaziQTR That is correct, it's done in the GPU side, but the monitor's refresh rate range must be able to support it. Regular Freesync monitors don't support it, only Freesync 2, premium and pro do as they have an extended refresh range.
Yes, it works well with both the regular and the pro. Just keep in mind that it doesn't have built in speakers, so you will need to buy them separately. Thanks for watching!
I believe that is an error in the spec sheet for the 27UL500 saying display port 1.2. If you read the manual for the 27UL500, which is a shared manual with the 550, it requires you to set display port v1.4 to use HDR. I dug into this when I was purchasing the monitor and that is what I concluded. I could be wrong, but I'll try and look into it again.
I don't use Macs myself, but do you have HDR enabled in the OS settings? HDR mode should automatically enable once it receives an HDR signal. Make sure HDR is enabled and also that you are trying to view HDR content. Hope this helps.
