Hi, thanks for your helpful, candid RU-vid video about the 3 newest 2018 LG dual-inverter window air conditioners! By chance, I discovered your video on 7-29-2018, after a month of searching obsessively for new “through-the -wall” air conditioners for our apartment in a 45-year-old 19-floor building in New York City. Like you, I’ve been exasperated that in 2018 most window air conditioners are noisy, inefficient, they lack “smart” wi-fi interfaces and still haven’t upgraded to the newest, efficient and environmentally friendly R32 coolant. Like you, I admire other LG products like their OLED TV’s and their appliances with new inverter technology (LG washer/dryers, microwave ovens, their refrigerators and air conditioners. But amid all the market hype about the virtues of split-mini air conditioners for homes with white picket fences, LG has not promoted their MUCH larger market for urban customers in buildings with “through-the-wall” and window A/C units. We can’t retrofit central A/C in older buildings because of costs and complex building codes, and we can’t install split mini A/C because we can’t hang a split mini A/C external venting unit outside each apartment’s windows on each floor of tall building! Similarly, we can’t install a satellite TV dish for each apartment, either! However, when I contacted LG Customer Service and I spoke at length to LG Technical Support about the 3 new 2018 dual-inverter A/C window units, their representatives told me emphatically to read the LG User Guides which were available on their LG website for each of these A/C units. The representatives warned me that these units are specifically designed WITH SIDE VENTS in order to vent properly through windows, and installation ONLY through windows is recommended. This seems to preclude my own application, which is Installation through directly through a wall of a building. Window air conditioners are not designed for installation through a wall unless manufacturers specifically design a special “through-the-wall sleeve” to allow enough air flow through the air conditioner’s side vents. Several Friedrich Kuhl window air conditioners are marketed as “through-wall-compatible,” and such air conditioners ship with the sleeve included for use in through-wall installation, though they can also be installed in windows. So when I saw your RU-vid video, I was very HAPPILY (!) surprised and delighted that you have managed to install the new LG 2018 dual inverter window A/C unit INTO YOUR WALL- exactly as I would really like to do! I am very surprised but encouraged-it sounds quiet! How deep (thickness) are your walls and of what materials are your house walls made? Are there layers of wall materials with brick behind your sheet rock room walls? When you installed your new A/C unit, does LG actually provide a “venting wall sleeve” that you install first, and then you have to slide the heavy A/C unit into this wall sleeve? Does it appear that there is enough of an air gap between the wall, the wall sleeve, and the heavy A/C unit to allow significant air to flow through side vents of the LG air conditioner? Sorry for all of these questions, but I’m excited that it works and I am just trying to figure out why! Of course, such air flow through the air gap between the wall, the wall sleeve, and the heavy A/C unit will contribute to the “laminar” airflow noise you hear in your room. Without such a sleeve- if you simply installed the A/C unit through a window, for instance (consult your installation guide), the LG A/C unit’s side vents would be free to vent into the outside air, so “laminar” air flow noise in your wall should be mitigated, although LG A/C dual inverter noise would still be present according to LG A/C engineering design specifications. I asked LG Customer Service Tech Support what would happen if I actually tried to install their new 2018 dual-inverter window A/C unit in my own through-the-wall application here. They simply re-quoted to me what is already in their LG A/C User Guides- they said that the window A/C unit’s side vents might not be able to get proper side ventilation through the wall, so the LG window A/C unit might easily overheat, malfunction, fail to cool or even quit prematurely at any time. They told me that I’d have a problem getting service or a repair if I didn’t follow their LG engineering installation guidelines to install the A/C unit in a window under the terms of LG’s A/C warranty. Since the LG A/C unit should last 5 or more years, it would be best to get a long-term A/C service contract, and definitely bring the LG A/C unit to a remote service depot to avoid having the repair personnel come to your home, where they might notice that the wall installation! I am undaunted by these issues and I am very encouraged by your installation. I’m going to purchase the same LG A/C unit for my apt!

This is why I rushed this video out! I knew people like you would be looking, given the time of year. I can't speak to the 120 volt model, but the 230 volt models are definitely the sleeve type. You do mount the sleeve, then slide in the heavier unit. Seems to me like it was designed for wall installations. I used 2.5" wood deck screws through the sleeve, (4 on the top, 3 on each side and 4 on the bottom) into the 2x4's that were installed for the previous AC. I felt no need for any further angle supports underneath, as it was very stable, but I would be extra careful given your distance to the ground. If mine falls out, it's only a 4 foot drop, and nobody is likely to be under it! I doubt mine will ever actually fall out, it's in very solid, but I don't want to say that what's right for me is right for you. That said, the way I have it mounted, my wall is 6 inches thick including drywall and exterior stucco, so typical 2x4 wood construction. As I have it mounted, the vents still have 4" from the wall, so I'd say your wall would need to be over 9" before it obstructed the vents, depending on how deep you install it. Again, it seems like it was designed for wall mounting. I was sure to have it angled so if it drips water, it drips outside. I like LG, but they can be overly cautious, and not as well informed on the tech specs of their equipment. I wasn't able to get all of the answers I wanted because I was asking some pretty in depth questions. Due to the variable speed of the compressor, there should be a range of BTU, but they only had the max numbers. It's new, I'm not going to pick on them too much. So far, my electric bill already reflects a difference. I averaged 56 KWH per day in June-July, and now, even though it's hotter, the average has been 42 KWH. I haven't had a full bill yet, but I'm projected to be $206 for the month at this pace, $84 less than last year, and we just had a price hike. I have discounts due to medical equipment, thankfully. A CPAP, qualifies btw. So even if it died at the end of next summer, it essentially would have been free, due to the savings on my bill, if things continue as they are. Granted my old AC could have been really bad, but I'm very happy with the LG so far. Funny, I watched a video about the NYC window AC issues just the other day, and I feel for your plight. Really too bad you can't go with Mini Splits, such a great solution, as you could cool and heat interior rooms with separate air handlers. One outdoor unit can operate 3-4 indoor units. I think this LG is a good unit, probably the best solution outside of a mini split. It's still pretty noisy on high, but I rarely need it higher than Fan 1 anyway (low fan), and I have left it on energy saver 24/7. Sleep mode is VERY quiet, just annoying that you can't leave it on that mode indefinitely, because I absolutely would! Having the compressor on all of the time (but at varied speeds for demand) means the temperature regulation is awesome. Always a cool breeze if it's running. I now run it at 73-74 vs 69 on the old unit. On the old unit, 70-71 would let it get too warm before the compressor kicked back on. I get chilly with the LG on 72. If it's no trouble, and you were planning on getting it through Amazon, please use the link in the description. Oh, and the LG does alert you to clean the filter more often, I've had 2 alerts to clean the filter already since the 7th of this month, so every 1-2 weeks or so. Better to keep it clean anyway. The first alert I just ignored it because it was still pretty clean, but the light was red which induced a little panic, lol. Orange would be a more appropriate color I think, seeing the red made me think something serious was wrong! The app is pretty good too, and connecting allows for updates. Being able to change temperature when away from home is a nice perk.

@@Subwoofer101 Hmm, it seems the unit really isn't intended for wall mounting, and I just realized it has to stick so far out the back that I don't think it'll work in my situation (the back encroaches into a walkway, and the 12" minimum stickout cited in the manual is probably too much).

Too much noise just kills the experience. Summertime, up to this point, has been a time when I didn't like getting new gear to test. Couldn't hear as much detail. This thing isn't completely silent, but wow, what an improvement! Too much noise also fatigues the ears. Thanks for the feedback, always appreciated!!

Excellent unit. 5 out of 5 stars. It cools great. And my favorite feature of all is how quiet it is. The fan runs quiet and you can't even hear the compressor unless you get real close to the unit. The first time in a long time I have given anything a top rating. The price was comparable to others in it's class. I got mine on sale at home depot. I would recommend this unit to anyone.

I've had mine installed now THRU THE WALL in my garage for a month now and couldn't be happier.! All 3 side vents completely are exposed outside. The fan auxiliary fan has a blade that throws water up onto the evaporator to help it be more efficient, it was so easy to install and came packaged very well. The energy saver mode is nice, but you don't have constant moving air which makes a huge difference if you or in my case, my pets are in the room. In energy saver mode the fan kicks in every couple of minutes to accurately "test" the air temp and cycles on as needed. I use that overnight when they're not in there to maintain a certain temp and keep out the humidity. Then I put it in cool hold mode for while they're in there and it's hot out. The wifi app works awesome and I use that all the time without a hitch. I cannot overstate how quiet this unit it! Across the room 20 ft I can feel the air being moved, but all you hear is the air actually moving, not the unit. It takes a 6-15r wall receptacle and the remote works from at least 25ft away. My garage is 900 sq ft. And is easily cooled with the 18,000btu. I have a 14" exterior wall and all vents are exposed properly. It replaced a 1984 model, the wall size was exactly the same. Great video, great machine.

Thank you sooo much for making a video about home theater noise floor and air conditioners.........I have been searching for a quiet air conditioner for my small Sensurround theater (6,000 BTU), and even though the unit you review here is not the size I need, the company is supposedly releasing smaller models in 2019.........and it helps to get all the reviews we can on these new ultra-quiet room air conditioners. I don't want to spend the money or hassle on a split a/c, so this new quiet a/c trend by room a/c manufacturers interests me greatly. Any kind of noise in a theater is a form of distortion, in my opinion. When I worked at JL Audio "car stereo", I actually changed out mufflers on cars to more quiet, "Cadillac" like mufflers - something I've never heard anyone else talk about. When you put the a/c on the lower fan speed (low or sleep?) in your video, while you were talking, I could not hear the a/c at all - which is exactly what we are shooting for in home theater! By the way, another secret to reduce window a/c noise, is to seal all gaps after install with Dap Peel N' SEAL removable sealant. It enables you to easily uninstall the unit and won't void the warranty because the sealant is removable with your fingers, you can pull it off. It also makes the ultimate subwoofer driver/speaker driver gasket for DIY. I also find it funny that the lowest fan setting is sleep mode and lasts only 7 hours...... but that's plenty of time to watch a couple of blue-ray movies, lol! Great job ---Gary
@Subwoofer101
@Subwoofer101 6 лет назад
Thanks Gary! Yeah, you touch on a point of why I never got super into car audio. I've had subs in a car, and it's more fun than not, but it's the noise that was always the biggest issue. If I had a Tesla, Lexus GS, or an otherwise super quiet car, it would be worth it, but you just have to overcome so much noise in a car. Quieter mufflers is a brilliant way to go. A large resonator too, if you have room. They do wonders for diesels. Not only is this AC quieter, my electric bill has dropped significantly. $100 less than the year before, and it's hotter this year. Some of that is me paying closer attention to consumption, but for sure the AC is consuming less power than the previous 18,000 BTU unit. I like your Peel N' Seal tip. Also thrilled that they plan to make smaller units.

bro, ur comments echo my sentiments! I live in a hot area and when summers hit, trying to hear the home theater over the racket is tough... there are times I'll endure the heat for an hr or 2 in silence rather than turn on the ac.. sure you can crank the sound but then its too loud during the times when compressor is off..the slow ramp up that inverters can do is Great for ac units and will certainly save on electric dills.. its that surge and sudden start that take major amps with old style ac units.. multiply that happening all day and you can see why they cost more to run, that and the fact they are constant as far as compressor speeds when running.

Thank you for this review, and all of the respondents, which has given me hope of a lower sound floor and utility bills. I have an older, very reliable and most likely noisier 2015 LG 18k btu unit, installed in my living/listening room. The old old unit in the den has finally died after 30 plus years, from the oppressive Texas heat, and the 2015 LG will replace it. I have had the very same model that you reviewed here, sitting on my living room floor, waiting for installation. I will be installing a new LG 8000 btu unit in my bedroom this weekend, and then hopefully finished with the musical AC chairs before it consistently hits above 95, and most certainly before it hits the sustained over 100 degrees...like it may do here for months on end.

I have the 14k but window mount one. got it used for only 350$ Canadian. my only concern is there's already erosion in the pan at the bottom because it builds up and uses a "slinger fan" to shoot water out the side and at the coils to cool it so its more efficient. I may spray paint the bottom after next year to make sure it lasts long
@hafeexius

On sleep mode, the temperature gradually increases by a few degrees after a while (by which time you've hopefully fallen asleep) and maintains the higher temperature Reason behind that being, you won't notice the higher temperature while you're sleeping. You'll end up saving money on the resulting lower electric bill because the compressor doesn't have to work harder.

I am from the Philippines and my National Panasonic AC is sounding not so good and the cooling is getting real bad even after getting cleaned. But one thing I can say is that my old AC is one tough one, over a decade of service. I did jump on this unit becuzse it is an inverter and it has the air ducts from the top, most window ACs here in our country is on one side vertically positionex. I am still waiting mine to arrive and get it installed. I hope the fins on this lasts like my old AC, which I have no issues with ever; we have severe tropical weather. By chance, I was able to check your video after deciding to order it and thank God it sounds really quiet. I am keeping my fingers crossed that the fins last as most ACs here in the Philippines are tint treated. Well only time will tell.. On the upside this would be my first inverter unit and I hope to save a lot on our electrcity bill. Anyhow, great review! Some trivia, in our country ACs are rated in HPs.

I know the LG you have is supposed to be for a window installation, so wouldn't the slide-out chassis sleeve I have technically be beneficial? My garage window is rather small but with some disassembly I can make this work. I am highly considering chopping a giant hole in the wall to install it. $3k for the mini split or $600 for this thing, I can't loose the 5th summer's use of my garage, I've had enough! Thanks for the review

Yes it is perfectly normal. The water is left in a condensate pan to help cool down the moving parts to help it stay efficient and last longer.

@Subwoofer101
@Subwoofer101 5 лет назад
I don't know if it could keep that temperature. Depends on the weather, your house and how much space you have. I will say that I can comfortably run the thermostat 2-5 degrees higher because it runs continuously. The temperature stays more consistent. I used to run the AC at 68-70 with the regular on/off compressor. With this AC, I am pretty comfortable at 72-73. I get cold at 70, and I'm always overheated in general.

Hi, thanks for making this clear and detailed video. I have to replace my current LG 18000 BTU wall air conditioner very noisy. I have been researching a quiet wall unit with same BTU as my current one. Your LG seems to be the one I need to purchase. My current LG measures W 26" by H 17" including the sleeve. In my case, the outlet for the previous AC was an exact match, 230 volt. There are different 230 volt outlets though, and even if the voltage is right, you might need to change the outlet. The 14,000 BTU is 120 volt, which I think is a standard outlet.

I just bought the same AC and when the compressor kicks in to cool, it makes a jet engin sound (not as loud, but in the same style), slowly getting higher in pitch. So the fan is quiet, but my compressor not so much. Does your compressor also make’s that kind of sound? I am wondering if my unit is faulty, or if it is normal. To make the sound appear, I put the lowes temp possible (16C) and it start’s quickly after that. Thanks, for your answer!

@Subwoofer101
@Subwoofer101 5 лет назад
There is some compressor noise, but I don't find it intrusive. It does spin up, but it's not an ongoing whine, I would have a problem with that. Hard to judge the noise without being in the room, but I would check with LG. I can hear the compressor more in sleep mode, mainly because there is less fan noise, but given the overall quietness, it's still a major win. In most other AC units, the noise drowns out everything.

Heres the thing with your installation, with as far into the wall that you have it , "flush" set you are covering both side sets of louvers on the front cover. Basically cutting intake by 1/3. That being said its not going to be as quiet because its being forced to draw air in a smaller square inch area. Also making it less efficient.

It starts to howl like a plane that's about to take off. After a while, it also starts giving off gurgling noise from condensate build-up. LG really went over-board with making this AC fancy-shmancy with its title, Dual Inverter. That's where it ends basically. It weighs approximately 98lbs by the way. Have fun installing it.
