2012 lg refrigerator freezer. Freezer works, crisper drawer freezes, refrigerator is warm and bad ice maker. Fan location and control board. Wife left fridge plugged in while cleaning it out. Caused the freeze over. Video made august 2019. My fridge still working good April 2020

If I’m watching this video and it was made four years ago then this should tell you these fridges are trash!! Thank you so much this is the only video that showed every single problem. I hope my daughter fixes her problem.

We bought an LG French Door fridge with meat and freezer slide outs, ice and water dispenser in the door in 2016 for about $3600 it ran fine for two years then the problems started, compressor went, then the circuit board on top of the fridge that controls the ice and water went, that was caused by a broken wire in the door, they ran a bypass wire to get it working but after that the compressor went out again so they replaced it again, good thing it was a ten year warranty on it, then this week the fridge stopped working again we’ve had to thaw it out about three times a year, so last month we order a Whirlpool side by side got it two days ago and it’s working great so far, the moral of the story is they make fridges to be disposable, governments around the world don’t care because it keeps the economy going and people employed. Great video.

Staci, you went thru a lot of trouble to show how to fix that Fridge. I have a unit that just stopped cooling everything. I found the Compressor is bad. The unit is less then 5 years old. The person at Lowes told me that LG has a lot of problems with the Compressors going bad. I will never buy a LG product again. This will be the best looking refrigerator in the trash. No one in South Carolina wants to work on LG units. I had to go out and buy a new refrigerator today. I am sick to have such a nice unit that does not work. Thanks for you video....Looks really good.

Very sorry to hear. There are videos out there on how to replace compressors. It requires cutting and sweating copper lines and adding Freon. You would have to buy a compressor online. I don’t see my fridge lasting a long time.

@@chikkicarolina15 I had compressor go out on lg fridge they told at lg they would pay for new compressor, but the labor will be on me. They gave me 15 places they said would do the work. Not one would work on lg. I had to buy a compressor, dryer filter, silver rods to braze compressor, Mapp gas and torch, nitrogen and tank to purge and run through lines when brazing, fire cloth to keep from wire damage when brazing. Already had vacuum pump and a/c gauges for pulling vacuum and charge r134a plus scale to weigh r134a. You need someone to recover r134a. You can get equipment to do it yourself, but now you need a certificate on how to do it. What a mess although now I have the tools to do it. I hated to see such a good-looking refrigerator go to the dump too.

Great video👍🏼 my ice maker stopped working a week ago, followed by the freezer, then the refrigerator stopped cooling. I opened the middle back and noticed a green light flashing on and off. The generator wasn’t humming. I unplugged the refrigerator. The freezer and refrigerator coil were not frozen. But I did notice a clear plastic bag covering one of two vents in the refrigerator. I plugged the refrigerator back and noticed no green light flashing on and off and also noticed that the generator was humming normal. I hope this worked. Thanks for your motivational video bud.

Thanks for the great video. Not only helped with the problem, but taking it apart resulted in a clean fridge / fresh start. Plus I vacuumed the coils in the back. Would, like to add that to remove main freezer drawer my LG fridge has a small white Phillips screw on each side that prevented me from lifting the drawer out until they were removed. I thought I was doing something wrong until I saw those and took them out.

Thank you SO much!! My mom’s fridge is having this same issue and because of your video, I popped open the panel to investigate and voila, the entire refrigerator coil had ice build up, and was preventing the fan from circulating the cold air. Currently attempting to defrost the coil, so fingers crossed tomorrow everything goes back to working smoothly. THANK YOU for saving me and my family hundreds of dollars!

Same exact model as yours, same problem. Less and less ice being made in the ice maker, gradual loss of cooling, then Er rF code. I replaced the freezer fan 3 years ago, so thought it might be the same thing. I pulled out both the freezer and reefer back panels and the coils in both places were frozen solid. I probably had 10 pounds of ice, there was even ice build-up behind the reefer drawers in the bottom left of the inside. I let it defrost overnight and plugged it back in. so far so good, fingers crossed. Update: 3 hours after plugging back in, seems to be working! FYI, it's possible to have this issue with ice on the evap coils in BOTH the freezer and the reefer at the same time.

Thanks for posting this Staci. Had the exact same problem, generated and error code E rF. After watching your video, all I needed to do was to look around the crisper drawer and see the block of ice. Only caution is to be patient removing the fan panel. The ice can build up around the corners of the panel, so don't force it or you can crack it. I would suggest to unplugging it over night with the doors open and a fan as you suggested and let nature take over.

This is a great video, now I know how to open the panels to get to the fans. I might have missed it if you mentioned it, but I would emphasize that you need to be really careful around that board on the back of the fridge. If the unit has power running to it, there are high voltage areas in there that could possibly kill you if you touch them.

Good video. Replaced freezer back panel with the upgrade a few days ago (missed out on the recall...thanks LG for not letting me know). You are right about the length of the wires. What a pain. The refrigerator coils icing up was something I didn't know about. Very helpful.

Thanks for this video! Other videos have temporary fixes using a blow dryer which can be effective, but this gets to the root of the matter and more long lasting results. Your video is also a great tutorial on dismantling and reassembling the unit.

This is identical to my fridge and your video is very helpful! However, my problem is that there were 2 giant chunks of ice under the bottom drawer of the freezer and blocked the vent that feeds the upper part. Everything worked ok after a thorough cleaning and thawing. Thanks for the great video! I'm sure that will help me in the future!

Good diy video . I will add something. Every refrigerator has a defroster element attached to the coil which is one heating element, normally comes in action periodically , what does melting the ice building in cooling coil. If you refrigerator repeat the same problem after deicing ( like the gentleman did ) you may check the heating element which it comes normally in rubber cable

Thank you so much for the video. My 2014 LG fridge has been nothing but problems. The compressor failed 6 months ago but the part was covered due to the LG lawsuit settlement, minus the service fee call ($250). Now the refrigerator compartment is 70 degrees, the ice maker stopped working, the freezer appears to be still working. I will be checking for ice buildup today.

Thank you so much for all the thorough information and video. Ice Froze the fan still in the fridge. I took the left bottom panel that the bottom drawer slides into out and there was ice in there too, taking that little Bottom left panel out made it easier to put The main back panel back in and retake out. Thank you this was helpful, we have the same fridge, but probably off by a year or so. My ice maker stopped and freezer stopped one after the other. Turns out, for the freezer, the fan in the back has a lot of lint and was not moving. Cleaning that well fixed it. The ice maker is another issue. My motor works when I press the test button, but it's not freezing or trying to dispense ice. It's always had problems. CB seems to be in good enough condition.

Mine is a 2014 with same problem. LG recommends unplugging and plugging it back in. Also, the panel on door is separating due to the ice maker spilling water onto back of door. LG calls it cosmetic damage and it is not covered which is why newer models have that section covered. I miss my 20 year old fridge.

Thank you so much for the video. I have a very similar model of fridge and it has started making a grinding sound that only stops when the fridge door is open, but not the freezer. It's likely that fridge fan hitting against the ice. At least I'm not going in blind now!

You can just leave the refrigerator unplugged for a day or so. You do not have to take it apart. Get a cooler or two and fill with ice for your food. Run a big fan on it with doors open. You should see water pooling in the base of upper and lower portions. Sop it out with sponge or rags. Should be good. Hopefully this video helps you. Please subscribe. Thank you

Going through the same thing - the freezer seems to cool well and the main section is anywhere from 45 to 52 or so. I pulled the top section apart, all looks good, defrosted it and then back on, for one day it was hanging at 36-38 but then after putting all the shelves back on it is sitting at 50. I never use the icemaker and ran a tester on voltage and amps which looks nominal for the condenser. Could be the thermistor or perhaps actual sensor in the main section. . . maybe the seals in the main section itself need to be replaced I'll start there before pulling everything apart. Bought in 2018; model LMXS30776D for $3K and another $450 for additional 5 year warranty from Home Depot but sucks for me as I'm on year 6. Coils in the back are clean and clear, will start with door seals, then look at sensors and then maybe fans and finally throw it out the window or take a bat to it

I was told through comments that temp sensors go bad. I believe my compressor went eventually. Could find anyone to work on LG. Bought a Samsung and has been good so far.

Great video, thanks! My problem is the “Er IS”. Looks like a 15 but it apparently means “Icemaker Sensor”. I replaced the icemaker unit with new LG unit. No good. Saw your video and checked the main board. Looks different as I have a different model. I found a relay labeled IC11. No apparent damage. I’m stumped now and $205 poorer for the ice maker. Sounds like I should cut my losses and buy a Samsung but this is the first problem we’ve had.

I think from what i remember, the fan in the freezer blows cold air into the ice maker through a port on the door. I never fixed that problem because i never hooked water up to it in the new house. Maybe there is a flap somewhere that gets stuck and doesn't allow air flow. Just thinking out loud. Its been awhile since i made this video.

Thanks for the video. My LG French Door had the same problem. Freezer worked great but the fridge was only reaching 50 degrees tops. I let the coils unfreeze but I'm still having the issue. Next step I'm gonna pull the back panel and test for any circuit problems. I'd hate to have to buy a new fridge. Wish me luck guys. lol

If your refrigerator seems to be running but not cooling at all, most likely LG famous linear technology compressor is shot or there is a refrigerant leak somewhere in a sealed system (compressor, evaporator, condenser). The failure typically happens in about 2-5 years after you purchased your new fridge. Whether or not it is a planned obsolescence is up for debate, but sure feels like it. Luckily, LG has a 10 year sealed system warranty on most refrigerators. They must repair it or buy-back unrepairable refrigerator. In other words, they have to give you your money back minus depreciation.

LG was not very accommodating to me. My inlaws bought a brand new house and fridge was in it so they had no receipt. They bought a different fridge a year or so later we got this one. Where or who did you call to receive your 10 year extended warranty? I am sure many frustrated people would be interested. Post a phone number and I will verify.

I could not find any company in my county who would work on an LG. Even the companies listed on their warranty page wouldn't work on LG. Crazy

There's another guy in youtube who replaced it all. Dug out the back sealed section where all the piping goes, to discover corrosion so essentially even if you replace condensers and everything else it will still leak and you'll run in circles and be out of pocket. I must have spent hours and days testing every bit so I'll get it replaced and may part this one before dumping it. 4th of July sale coming up. My brother had the same model and it went, he ended up with a Miele as those are solid and 10 year warranty with bo hassles. Pricey but in the end cheaper in the long run

I have the same model as you show here. Mine quit making ice at first, then dropped in temp. In my younger years I owned a refrigeration company but now I'm old, bad back, and about blind. I'd like to ask where the defrost timer is located because it's usually easier to get to than the defrost heater itself. Like you, I'm a big ol boy and working one handed and sideways in these freezers suck. Thanks ahead of time.

I honestly do not know. This was the first refrigerator i had to work on in this depth. I just started disassembling until i was confident of a solution. I did eventually get rid of that piece of garbage.

@@chikkicarolina15 did it break again? MIne failed about a year ago, and they put a new compressor in. Three weeks later, it started becoming intermittent and stopped cooling. Id swear im only hearing the Ice maker fan. The other three dont seem to be working even when I use a magnet to overide the door open sensors. Unfortunate for us, the company that did the work went bankrupt. I bought a new fridge to put beside it, but the POS that is broke is still here. Im debating trying to work on it myself and see where I get with it. Its either that or invest in another unit. To be honest, I am not sure I want to dump any more money into this thing. They were a couple grand when I bought it new, and its been thru 2 compressors now. I think I have like 4800 in the damn thing over the years. Crazy, and it hasnt been reliable. ITs a shame too because I really liked the design/layout.What prompted you to get rid of yours?

My fridge would cool to 60 and freezer to 40. I watched multiple videos and tried all the tips. All said and done, no change. Fans work, coil is clean and so on. Still won’t cool to where it should be. Everything is clean now and sounds normal but still won’t work. My LG French Door was built in 2017 and I called in my claim in Oct of 2022. Clearly out of warranty. Without an argument, LG is sending someone out this week (parts and labor included) at no charge. They will also reimburse me for food spoilage (take photos of the waist).

LG has a bad rep for their "Linear compressor", there's even a guy who made a video on it comparing a good one and a bad one, the bad one still worked but was very loud. I think the best fridge to get is the one with the fewest gimmicks ( no ice maker, water dispenser or other fancy gizmos ), sometimes the K.I.S. (keep it simple) principle couldn't be truer.

I had my compressor twice replaced for my 2015 LG. First lasted 2 years after use before the manufacturer warranty expired. And good thing I bought an extended warranty which covered the 2nd replacement. Now I'm out of warranty worried when it will break again.

My frige French 3 dooor is working just fine, but some times stops freezing and the funny part is that the cooler department is ok, the compressor keeps working fine so I pulled everything out of the freezer, later on like 2 weeks all of sudden is freezing back like if nothing had happened.any ideas out there? I thought the blower fan goes out in the freezer area, but the freezer is worm (room temperature) if you touchthe back of it where the coil is attached tou don't feel it that is cold.

I have the same fridge/freezer only my evaporator fan stopped working and no ice build up. No codes. Thinking maybe the control panel is out? Run all the tests with the test button on the control panel and everything works fine only its not working. Arrrr

Pull the circuit board out and check it. See if anything is burnt. I heard temp sensors also go bad.

That part that is burnt on that board is a bridge rectifier. Get someone at an electronic shop to replace the part or if you know how to solder you can do it yourself.

You evaporator fan is not working you need to replaced and the sensor change to, the fan work is distributed cool air all over and defroz the evaporator , wiht out fan working evaporator will get ice all over, Order the fan on amazon same serial number, good LK .

Our LG refrigerator failed so we finally found out that these units are junk after no repair person would work on them, so we were told there was this class action lawsuit and we needed to contact LG. LG customer service was a joke as they used a specific deterrence tactic to prevent LG from having to replace there poorly make refrigerators. They say their policy is that they will replace the unit after 3 documented work orders to fix it, so when you contact them after the third repair fails they just say they have not documentation of a third work order and continuously have to keep submitting work orders to have a repair person do the same repair that does not work! In the mean time, initially my family and I got very sick due to the high temps the refrigerator, we had to throw out all our food three times after the three repairs failed and now were have no refrigerator through the holidays!!!! This process has now exceeded two months and is not resolved! We will look into a lawsuit in our area as well.

Sorry to here. I have a 2nd house I renovated to rent and I purchased a new Samsung kitchen suite and washer dryer. So far so good. I am thinking compressor may go bad because coils freeze and it over heats the compressor. My grand parents had a fridge from the early 50s and they gave it away working in the 90s. I remember they unplugged it and opened the doors to air it out ever so often. They don’t make them like they used to. Sorry I couldn’t help you but please subscribe if you can. Merry Christmas 🎄

Thanks very much!! Finally found a how-to on this dreaded fridge. But, I didn't find any frost so I gotta find out what else is wrong. Taking a temp reading from the hole on the left side to the ice maker reads -5 to 20. Taking a reading on the coils on the fridge only reads 58, so definitely something is not right. Maybe thermostat or mainboard?

Did you check the compressor behind fridge at the bottom, underneath? There is also a fan and coil under there. Is coil clogged with dust or clean? Is fan working? These fridges are known for compressors going but I think a majority of them just need a defrost.

I had the same issue a few years ago. The compressor went. Local repairman would not touch. Had to call LG. They send their own tech. I think it cost me about $400 hundred dollars at the time. Thought it was cheaper than buying a new refrigerator - (would not buy LG again)

Not sure, but we noticed upper shelf of the fridge had close too room temperature jars and packages and the crisper draw was frozen. It gradually over 5-6 day got warmer until I put a turkey thermometer in there and it was 70 degrees. Granted South Carolina is generally in the 90’s plus outside in August so 70 did seem hot. My wife contributes the freeze over to be her fault. We had company coming for Labor Day so so cleaned the fridge while it was still running. Doors were open for an hour or so. We have been good since I defrosted and dried ours. No more issues.

@@chikkicarolina15 I'm currently fighting a problem similar to yours. First, people should know there is, or was, a class action lawsuit against LG over faulty compressors. We had a bad one, so they came and fixed that. The repair guy said they're doing about 20 per week, so it's a serious problem. Now, it cools, but after 24 hours the refrigerator only goes down to 44 degrees. It's set to 36 degrees. The freezer goes to around 10 degrees even though it's set to 1 degree. So, I think you missed the point of Tommy's question. How long does it take to cool once everything is working? I have my own temp sensor I'm using to test this, and I have it located about halfway up inside the refrigerator cabinet. Realizing that temp stratification occurs, I moved my sensor to the bottom of the cabinet. I'm hoping then the temp will match the set point on the LG more closely. Also, I discovered there is a self-test button on the circuit board. You press it a total of 4 times. Each time you press, wait and it tests a certain function of the LG. One of those is a fan test. So when you get to that point, you can open the door and feel if air is blowing. The 5th press goes back to normal operation. Once you feel no air is blowing, you're down to a frozen coil or a bad fan. The LG compressor defect is easy to detect....the compressor will be running but the condenser coil (bottom, right, rear) won't be warm. Man, kudos to you for such a great video and being so honest about that ice maker motor shorting out your board. Many wouldn't admit they didn't do an ohm meter check on the motor to see if it was shorted. If I had $100, I'd send it to you just for being honest. Thanks!

Update: I moved my external temp sensor to adjacent to the factor temp sensor hole at the bottom. My reading dropped to 37 degrees. So now it agrees with the set temp. I think they should have placed the factory location a bit higher in the cabinet. Anyway I think it’s working correctly now (temperature-wise) yet I'm flashing error codes 22 and 33. I have to research those codes. Update: the "22" and "33" are the TEST MODES. Not the error codes. It's a coincidence that "22" is also an error code. The book cryptically says "if there's an error code, the test mode is cleared and the error code will be displayed". I did notice when I put the fridge back against the wall per the install specs, the temperature rose a few degrees. So I cut a hole in the drywall behind the fridge that lines up with the heat-escape grill on the fridge. This created a "cooling tower" to give the heat someplace to rise into. The great part is this is passive, so the heat will continue to rise out of the back even if the fridge fan isn't running. High hope on this DIY fix. I think this adventure is nearing the end. I'm going to cancel the pending service call as I think I have taken this to a level even they wouldn't have.

Thanks so much Staci! I can't for the life of me, get the freezer back panel off. Thinking ice may be holding it, I used a blow drier for an hour and lots of elbow grease, and still it's stuck! Anyone have any ideas on how to get the damn back panel off? There should be a class action lawsuit on this thing. And the one-year warranty on parts and labor is lame; I should have realized that was for a reason!

I pop the freezer panel off by first popping the sensor cover off as he shows with flathead screw drive then stick finger in to pull from the top. The bottom has small tabs so that’s the reason I don’t pull from bottom as he did. Obviously you want to make sure any ice build up has been thawed.

I have almost the same model as yours Staci, my ice maker quit working , throwing an Er IT code. Replaced the main board, the sub PCB board, the water soleniod in the door, the water solenoid to the main supply. Then I noticed the temperature inside the door icemaker never gets to Zero but stays above 6. Temperature in the freezer compartment is -3 just like its set to. Hmm could be bad fan next to the freezer fan, you think? I will try your advice and take the freezer panel apart.
