@appliancerepair420 Good content‼️....I'm a Technician here in Texas and just started doing sealed systems. I replaced a compressor in a LG a couple of days ago buy didn't update it. The compressor did not start up after the repair, could that be the reason why? I realize I need to go ahead and purchase a jig.

Couple things, you don’t need to sand anything on the compressor, you definitely don’t want grit in the system… If your 15% silver brazing wire isn’t flowing on copper then you’re using way too much heat or not enough, copper actually self cleans when it’s hot, you’ll see it turn shiny when it’s at the right temperature. The stainless lines need 45% silver and with flux… 15% won’t flow and will become brittle and leak on stainless, so you’re using the wrong wire on the stainless… 100psi is more than enough pressure for leak testing, you’re near the burst pressure of the evaporator at 250psi, this system will never have more than around 150psi on the high-side and no more than 90psi on the low-side… Another note is you really want to purge and flush the system and it’s a good idea to replace the condenser… A micron vacuum gage is really not optional, there’s no way to see your vacuum level without one so if your equipment isn’t perfect you will likely not end up with a proper vacuum, time, like running 15 or 20 minutes is no good if you want to know that it was right… I’ve seen hundreds of failures because a vacuum gage wasn’t used it’s the most common problem of overheating compressors with non condensables (air) in the system…

This was great, with only two issues, the pressure test with the nitrogen. You used much higher pressure than the low side operating pressure. The low side pressure is rated 130-140(PSI) or so on these LGs. Going up to 250(PSI) can cause the lower strength aluminum of the evaporator to explode and ruin the part causing you more work. Second, you should recharge with the refrigerant upside down so you are adding liquid. It's faster and easier for your scale to measure the liquid than the vapor state of the R134a. Edit: Oops, you overcharged the system. Slightly undercharging is okay, you lose very little efficiency, however, overcharging greatly reduces the efficiency of the system. Better to slightly undercharge than to slightly overcharge. But, the amount is so small it's probably a small thing.
@tonyp6088
@tonyp6088 2 года назад
Good pick up. The system is probably undercharged though as the hoses and manifold gauge are holding refrigerant. 👍
@robertw1871
@robertw1871 Год назад
His charge is actually low looking at the pressures, the hoses, especially the high side hold an oz or more… so he’s under by about 1.5 I’d guess… weight is where you start, it’s not right until the pressures are good… More than likely it cool ok in this case, you might end up with fan issues in the summer though with excessive frost on the evaporator… these systems actually run better being slightly overcharged… As long as you don’t have entrained liguid frosting the suction line you’re probably fine there as well…

In HVAC you can flow nitrogen because you have open ports on both liquid and suction sides. With refrigerators you can't flow nitrogen because there is only 1 port in and out, the process port. If you try to flow through the process port, the nitrogen has no where to escape and blows out your fittings. What I do is replace the compressor and force nitrogen into the new compressor expelling any air, turn off the nitrogen, and braze. There's enough nitrogen left in the system to keep it clean.

@@alejandrozometa1951 A pressure check for leaks is not what he is talking about. He's talking about flowing nitrogen to prevent oxide formation which you really can't do with refrigerators because there is typically only 1 process port. Gas can only flow in and not out. When I pressure test, I start with 25 psi and check for leaks, then 50 psi, then 100 psi max. Saves gas if you have a leaker at 25 or 50 psi and you find it early since you have to release nitrogen anyway to repair. 100 is enough for any leak to detect. 150 is overkill.

If you're replacing the problematic LG compressors, you will need the new TCA 3811706 / FLS075LANA LG universal compressor with the red vertical stripe. It replaces like 50 other compressor numbers, and needs to be programmed, but beware, if your refrigerator is 2014 or older, you'll need to replace the control board too as the pre 2015 boards won't accept the programming. Brand new control boards come pre-programmed so the program tool is not necessary when buying a new board.

@Kevin-ib4gv
@Kevin-ib4gv 2 года назад
@@cris.g4608 Not all filter driers have a Schrader valve, but if only replacing the filter drier, and it has one, yes you can flow through it. The problem is when replacing the compressor. You assemble your discharge, suction, and filter drier. Attach the nitrogen to the process port and flow, but the cap tube is so small it builds pressure no matter how slow you flow nitrogen and a) blows the fittings apart or b) the fitting stays together but nitrogen flows OUT of your fittings preventing solder from wicking into your connections. A total PIA either way. At least this is what I've experienced.

But, with the way the service industry is today, and lucking out to get someone that actually will do the job right, you are better off tossing it and buying another. You have way to much heat for such small lines. You didn’t purge with nitrogen. Now you have copper oxide scale in your system. You should not have put those access valves on the system. You now do not have a hermetically sealed system. You should have used the process tubes for purging, evacuating and charging. No need for shraeder valves, and they have been known to leak. You exceeded the low side test pressure. 100 psi is all you need. You should have just charged liquid thru the dryer. You could easily get in those few ounces without running the system. By a micron gauge. It is the only way to guarantee you don’t have a leak. Please take this as constructive advice. Hope it helps.

@sanseiryu
@sanseiryu 2 года назад
I know you must have been joking about that $75 filter drier from LG. Is it like a catalytic converter that has precious metals inside? It can't be any different than the drier I bought from Marcone parts for $3.50 wholesale. At $75 your cost, you'll have to charge a 40% markup ($30)to the customer for that drier, $105.00. You should be using a heat barrier blanket or shield when brazing to keep the torch flame from impacting any plastic or flammable components. You melted the plastic defrost water basin and the black insulating foam around the condenser fan. Luckily the condenser fan blade is sturdier plastic so it didn't look like it melted. Both the lo-side and the hi-side tubing were long enough that you could have brazed the compressor to both without having the compressor sitting fully within the compartment. That could have helped prevent the melting of the plastic you experienced. Your tip is too big on your torch. You don't need a turbo tip, blasting that huge flame that's why you melted the plastic pan.

You should have charged it thrue the liquid side. You opened the suction to scale it in. But that's going to give you a flooded start. Which can wash out the oil on the compressor.
@Kevin-ib4gv
@Kevin-ib4gv 2 года назад
It's R134a and he's charging with vapor, not liquid. Even if he did charge with liquid, the majority would vaporize before it ran the 10 feet of hose to the compressor, and the rest would vaporize inside the compressor as it equalized pressure between the high and low side.
@appliancerepair420
@appliancerepair420 2 года назад
You want to charge it in vapor through the suction line. To avoid the flooding of compressor. Some people charge liquid for but they charge it very slowly and that does risk flooding of the compressor if you do it to fast. Vapor is the way to go.
@Jake-by9ly
@Jake-by9ly 2 года назад

@appliancerepair420

Any refrigerant ending in an "a" like 134a. The "a" stands for Azeotropic. That means it's a blend of different refrigerants. The keep the blend genuine it needs to be put into the system as a liquid. All the different refrigerants have a different saturation point and will boil off at different pressures. If the throttle the manifold in short bursts the liquid will vaporise before it gets to the compressor. Good work on the video though 👍

I get these units ag a warehouse with this “new” version of compressor and software. Same thing. They break with in a 2 years even times way less than that. Frustrated customers all over. There is a way to get rid of this nuisance. But LG has found out the cheap way out and has tampered with previous diagram to throw techs off so they won’t repair that way. They want all the money yet they produce a crappy product. Do yourself a favor and buy American made products. Whirlpool fridges are the best get the simplest ones. Kitchen aid is also a great brand.
