I’ve only ever watched his interviews with prior reality show casts but watching this exposes a hint of privilege in my opinion. it’s basic ethics to provide adequate food and water and compensate people for their time because half the people on LIB for example aren’t even shown. just my honest opinion

Was kind of disturbed at Nick’s takes in this one. “Why does it need to be dignified?” Yikes. Just because you’re on a reality show doesn’t mean you don’t deserve dignity. Just because the contestants signed a contract doesn’t make it right-why wouldn’t you want to improve the conditions??Especially when producers probably know damn well their contestant’s aren’t going to be able to decode the legal jargon within the contracts.

I think Zack’s “receipts” were more so a symbol rather than anything he was trying to recieve attention for. Mental health matters and his story was able to influence others in a positive way rather than calling someone out with actual accusatrory receipts.

I love me some Nick Viall and I've been riding with his podcast for some time now, but man I can’t help but notice a recent shift in his disposition when providing his perspective on certain topics. Him saying he doesn't care about criticism he receives for his commentary rubs me the wrong way. He cares to some degree if he's bringing it up. Nick is gonna Nick, but in his older episodes, there was a sense of understated humility and respect he had when being called out or presented with a perspective he didn’t necessarily agree with.

Here is my issue with reality tv contestants not getting paid: what kind of people are actually able to take off weeks or months of work to go on the show? Mainly people coming from wealthy families, or people who are really desperate. If it’s a show where people are looking for love, that is already narrowing down the pool by A LOT. This conversation reminds me of the conversations about unpaid internships. It sounds like Nick would say, “if people are willing to work for free, then why should we pay them to intern?” Well, it creates a cycle where only people from wealthy families are able to take the internship that doesn’t have a salary but is a better opportunity in the long run, and the rich get richer and the poor get poorer

Denied access to food and water is very different from "this isn't an all-inclusive resort" People seem to just be asking for better working conditions/basic rights and those speaking out have started a foundation to help others joining or thinking of joining a show get access to lawyers (to review contracts) and mental health care --- I appreciate that people always have some self-serving motivations but this take seems overly cynical and patronizing.

I just finished the Dave Neal video on this. Access journalism explains it all. Nick gives shows and the literal villains on shows a pass so that the shows keep giving him access to their talent. The nepo discussion was also weird as fuck. Feel like a lot of structural oppression was overlooked in Nick’s take. All things being equal, yes maybe don’t piss and moan about the opportunities of others. But it’s hard to be pro nepo culture when that culture is rooted in patriarchy, white privilege, and more. We do not live in a meritocracy.

I get where Nick is coming from regarding the LIB lawsuit and i feel we have been conditioned to feel cringe when we hear of unhappy participants, esp on reality tv…but the suck it up and shut up mentality because you signed up for it and you’re “talentless” is problematic, and hypocritical, bc he has stated multiple times when defending others that you don’t know what you’re actually signing up for until you’re in it. And, are people not allowed to bring attention to poor conditions they had to face to see if there is overall any validity to their claims? Sometimes people aren’t looking to be a victim, they’re looking to make things better; we won’t know which one it is until a spotlight highlights and inspects it. Abusive and inappropriate events/beliefs that people have survived, wouldn’t have been changed if attention wasnt brought to it. This lawsuit could be bogus, sure, but we have to be vigilant in our critical thinking.

ouf... hard disagree with you on the lawsuit. Think about how much money Netflix makes from LIB, and think of how inconsequential it would be to pay its cast a bare minimum wage? Saying that "someone else is in line to take that spot" is a way to justify inhumane working conditions. It's something that large corporations do to justify the dangerous working conditions in manufacturing companies for illegal immigrants. I only ever come to Nicks podcast for the people he is interviewing.. But Nick himself is always so condescending. I was so pumped to jump into the shower and listen to Johnny Lowe talk about the Schwartz situation and was so disappointed when I had to listen to 30 minutes of Nick give his condescending and uneducated and obviously unresearched opinion on this love is blind stuff. Its been known that they didn't provide adequate food and water in the past and pushed alchohol on the contestants.. Poeple have talked about it right away after their season. Danielle and Nick have been speaking up about Danielles Mental health pretty much from day one. I don't think the guy that was suing was even on camera so clearly wasn't looking for clout in this situation as he never had it to begin with. Zacks message on love and forgiveness on his instagram was so beautiful and important. People who leave their homes to film a show for weeks SHOULD be compensated and paid... like WHAT? and adult or not, grooming, manipulating, fear tactics, etc do happen in television.. to say they signed a contract they should know is stupid. A lot of LIB contestants back in the day were randomally picked, probably had no idea what they were fully getting into.. it isn't the well oiled machine the bachelor is. His takes are so off.

The LIB take was really hard to watch. I usually like nicks take but this was so cringe and such a disregard to human decency. It feels like an old person shaking their fist and going "back in my day". The networks should be held accountable to give people a dignified working environment. Sometimes when people go through a traumatic situation and are told "it's normal" and it's "what they signed up for" they think it should be fine for others to suffer through it as well. There is for sure a psychological term for this.. but no matter their "talent" if we know better we should do better. Just because he was subjected to that doesn't mean it should continue into the future.

There's a HUGE difference between being open to the possibilities of reality tv vs. specifically being there for fame. You should not go on dating shows like the bachelor/lib with the intention of being famous. More so with LIB, you HAVE to be engaged to get screen time. Even fully engaged couples don't make it in the cut. You have to present as emotionally invested in someone else who IS there for the possibility of love. It's entirely cruel to do so knowing you are only there to be famous. People like Jackie (and Irina) who said they "couldn't picture being married anytime soon." Then wtf are you here for? Enagaged for? Its a horrible thing to do to someone I can't believe this even has to be explained.

Bottom line is the cast members make the production company and Netflix a lot of money and they deserve to be fairly compensated. This is quickly moving to the top of my favorite podcasts, and this episode epitomizes why: Of all the Bach-related pods, the Viall Files has the best production quality, the best team, and the best guests. Nick, Amanda and the other regulars know how to ask questions and then STOP TALKING to allow their callers and guests to speak. They move this along at a great pace -- excellent pace. They know how to gracefully interject when a conversation goes on too long (and maybe this is attributable to good editing as well), and you can tell they come highly prepared to ask great, relevant questions. I have been a LONG TIME Bachelor viewer (since season 1). It's my guilty pleasure. Thanks to you all for putting together such a great program. I don't know if this is the right place to put this review, but I just wanted to thank you all for doing such a great job and spending TIME preparing yourselves so you can give us QUALITY content. Nick, thank you for bringing reality to reality TV. I know tons of actors and RU-vidrs who'd kill to get on a reality tv show. Everyone wants a short cut to fame and fortune. There is nothing wrong with that, but there is no guarantee. If it doesn't turn out the way you wanted, stop looking for someone to blame. When did America become a country of whiney victims?

Lots of the comments make Nick sound like a bad guy. I don’t think he is by nature. But he sure has fallen into the success trap that’s so seductive. He comes off too “full of himself”. That’s the turn off for me.
