Liberals decided they ‘weren’t on the Tony Abbott bus’ after he made ‘catastrophic decisions’

Former defence minister Christopher Pyne says during former prime minister Tony Abbott’s time in government, there were too many people in the Liberal party room who “didn’t like” him.
This came after a disastrous 2014 budget and a few bad decisions which led to a leadership spill within the Liberal Party.
“There were too many people in the party room that didn’t like Tony,” Mr Pyne told Sky News host Chris Kenny.
“There were a couple of catastrophic decisions which caused a good third of the party room to decide they weren’t on the Tony Abbott bus.
“One of those was not giving the party room a conscience vote on same-sex marriage.”

Sour grapes from Chris Kenny! Tony Abbott showed leadership early on & called out The Voice for what it was - racist & divisive. Then a shot across the bow at (the real target?) Peta Credlin for spilling the beans on the PM's "1 pager" after her FOI research. Really petty & small-minded.

Abbott may not have been anything like as bad as the alternative but he made quite a few stupid decisions. One was his irrational and incomprehensible support of Constitutional Recognition. Another was his back down on defending free speech, claiming "the time isn't right." I repeat, he wasn't as bad as the others, but he wasn't brilliant either.

Eleven minutes 53 seconds before the the real reason is spoken. SSM. Most Aussies would have known that from the dedicated campaign from the Project. It was absolutely relentless. No one can survive when you have all of the press against you. You only have to eat an onion and you are lampooned. Until the press becomes non partisan, Australia will continue the slide.

In hindsight Abbott was a good man. He's a no BS type of guy and although I'd label him as a bit eccentric he certainly is not a fool. Those in the Liberal party that opposed him would be the ones who helped bring the party down. Turnbull was there for number 1 - no interest in the country or it's residents. It's always about Malcolm. Morrison was weak and lacked the balls when balls were needed. I would certainly love to have Abbott at the helm now instead of the failing dud, Albanese.

Apparently Albenese takes advice from Rudd. That explains a lot. "The Killing Season" documentary gives a good account of how the egomaniac Rudd conducted himself, another expose would be nice though. Just on this though, Scomo when in opposition got stuck with the tough portfolios. Health and immigration for example. I always thought he was a good PM.

PP had more initials after his name than he could count, an Australian honour was absolutely meaningless to him. But that decision destroyed Abbott's credibility.
