Frozen was one of the hottest movies of the decade in the USA and around the world. Or was it? Was the French version of the film (La Reine des Neiges) the same blockbuster hit that we in the US sang along to all year? Or is it just different enough to merit its own analysis? Considering what you're watching, I hope you know that answer.

In Danish she says "let it happen" and I gotta say, that's probably the one where she has given up the most. "I have no power to influence this decision, so all I can do is accept that it is happening"

It’s even worse because she also says that she can never go back and the mountain is her true home. Ironically though, it might have been more of a callback to the original story, especially considering the language itself.

In russian she says "I'm not going back. I have to forget everything" Also the chorus is "Let it go and forget" And instead of "Let it go! I'm one with the wind and sky" she says "Let go and forget about that world from your dreams" which is kinda sad

i have to say that turning a potentially uplifting message into one about crushing weight hammering your soul into a mountain is so very eastern european. it's telling that you could probably tell exactly which part of the world each version of frozen is from just from how they choose to word that single chorus line.

I want to encourage people to listen to Disney songs in various languages to see how they changed. my personal favorite is Lion King's French version of "Can you Feel the Love Tonight" because of how it changes Nala's lines "Why won't he be the king I know he is, the king I see inside." becomes "He is the king in exile, who reigns over my heart." Which I find to be a much more powerful line as it is a more complete confession of love than the English version.

My favorite one is in El Dorado, in english, in the song "it's tough to be a god", Tulio says "if they say that I am a god, that's what I am" and it becomes in the french version " if they believe that I am god, I am the right man" Which is much more interesting as they expose the whole plot of the movie in a joke. It also makes them appear more like the douches they are at the beginning, playing fool of the Incas

1:50 - I loved how you used the word "altered" soon after saying "quirk", because in the French localization of the My Hero Academia manga, the equivalent term of "quirk" is the word "alter" (Latin for "change" or "other", also used as a prefix in France, like in "alternatif" ou "altérité"). ...It's interesting for no one, I know that, but I just wanted to leave a comment anyway.🙃 Bonne continuation dans ton travail de vidéaste, c'est très intéressant. I watched the english version the first time I saw the movie, but this made me watch the song in my own language for the first time. I have to admit the German version is also very different from the american; Here she's singing about the people being exposed to her as the "true self" that she always tried to hide, but now that she failed to suppress her feelings, leaving her Kingdom of solitude behind, she can now express herself in her beautiful power. She is euphoric to explore her powers ("The cold is now a part of me", "I feel like I was reborn") without hesitation or consideration. She seems almost excessively cheerfull for her newfound independence saying how she will "let go/leave behind", "finally I am free", "smashing shut the doors behind me", "now being ready"(to move on) and how "they will not see a tear in my eyes". Listening to it in German, it sounds more upbeat, like the french version, to me. She talks about how she suffered through hiding her true self from the Kingdom's people for years. Though I got the feeling the German Elsa sees herself as something superior to the people in the Kingdom below and how almighty and unlimited her power is that she can now freely express herself with. She literally sings "This ability; its power is limitless", "I wonder what I can do with this ability", "I can feel this power that is a part of me. It (her power) flows within my soul and all the beauty around me. Just one thought and the whole world becomes ice". Not sure if its meant to be that way but it kinda gives me the chills.

In polish version the song is called "I've got the power". The whole song is about elsa moving from her past and acknowledging that "something in the cold has been pulling me in for years" and embracing that she has the power. At the begining of the song she really is sad that she had to run away as she says "the kingdom of the lost soul and I am the queen of it". Also we can see some remorse in her as she says "the gloomy wind plays the strings of the storm that in the heart plays". Then she follows"although i'm resisting. It has no use". Then she picks up her voice and says "no feelings, that's how you should live". This implies that she accepted the fact that she has to live isolated and nobody to speak to. This is confirmed by her saying "no words. No dreams. Don't let my tears get to me" In the end she says "i'm not gonna step back. Not gonna look back". And when the next part says "i've got the power. -//-. With new dawn i wake up. -//-. -//-. Old me is gone" And she finishes the song with "something in the cold has been pulling me in for years". This all shows how all the versions have different meaning with the polish one being about accepting that she has the power and she has to move on and accept the fact that she has to run away from her happiest memories and live in her solitude. Of course some soul was lost from translation but it's natural

Personally, I've grown to like the Polish version's "Mam tę Moc" over the English version's "Let it Go." One of the very few times where the original version is IMO worse than a localization. Now that's not Idina Menzel's fault in this case, rather she did the absolute best she could with the song she was given by Disney, it's just that the Polish localization team (as well as localization teams for certain other languages) were better able to work with the tempo and melody than the main (US based) song writers of the movie. While the lady who provides Elsa's singing voice in the Polish dub (if it isn't the same as the actress who provides the speaking lines, honestly I don't know) might not be quite on the level of Idina Menzel in pure ability or talent or whatever you wish to call it, but had the advantage of having better lyrics for the song (even though that is somewhat subjective, and difficult to get across to those who don't understand Polish). Though, Frozen Heart (the song performed by the Ice Cutters at the start of the movie) is better in the original English IMO.

Yeah pretty much, actually his entire argument seems pretty crap to me. It seems to amount to "blatantly delusional characters that ignore reality are better" because... reasons I guess? Now self deception can be a facet that can make a character interesting, but to seemingly imply that it's by default superior to having a character undergo self-reflection and rumination is pretty much dogshit. Actually by his own summary the American version sounds more nuanced in regard to her circumstances, while the French one just sounds like a deluded lunatic.
@puntastic78
@puntastic78 4 года назад
@@Tk3997 Precisely. The French version doesn't even fit the rest of the movie. The core message of the story is about love, so a song about going into isolation should be problematic and a little negative, even if the character is trying to put a positive spin on it. If Elsa had no problem with being alone forever, the emotional journey we see her go through makes less sense. No fear, no anxiety, no regrets, and nothing wrong with isolating ones self means that the lesson she goes on to learn later is unnecessary. It's ok to like the French version, but I reject these criticisms on the english version unless he can tie up the loose ends in the next video. (Sorry if the next video is already out, I wouldn't know since I'm behind on my subscriptions)

In one of the making-of documentaries, they explained how they had to overhaul Elsa's character from the tragic villain to a protagonist SPECIFICALLY because Let It Go was too empowering, but too good to edit or rework into the story elsewhere. Idina killed it so hard that they warped the movie around the song and the emotions it brings, but if you're right I think they may have missed the point of their song by thinking it's unironically and completely empowering, when it's actually a more nuanced version of their original point/vision.

So maybe I'm wrong, but isn't Elsa not understanding the consequences of her actions the entire point of the plot? She runs away from her responsibility and builds up this entire facade for herself as this ice queen, literally creating her own castle to live in so she can just keep up appearances without having to worry about the going ons of the rest of the world while her actions are currently causing fear and panic among the people back at her old kingdom. That's why the reprise of the song is so important, it re-paints the situation Elsa has caused into one where she's forced to face the responsibilities of her actions. Basically, "You might be happy here and that's fine, but because of what you've done big shit is going down and you have a moral imperative to fix the mess you've caused", which causes Elsa to panic in disbelief. She's found a way to cope with her failures and now, all at once, she's being dragged back into the life she left behind for better or for worse. In the French version, the phrasing might be more empowering, but by changing that context then that completely changes the intent of the scene. Maybe it works better with other changes that were made, but by implying Elsa knows about what she's doing and is making more of a conscious decision to lead her life like this instead of trying to just dodge the aftermath of what she's done, then that re-shapes how events actually transpire in a way that paints her in a much more negative light. She's no longer someone who fled from her past only to be dragged back into her mistakes, she's someone who chose to run away DESPITE knowing there would be consequences. It's less "I made a new life for myself and things went wrong" and more "I created a prison for myself knowing that it would be a problem."
@Rynamony
@Rynamony 4 года назад
This is actually super interesting and now I'm thinking abt the Spanish dub because in Spanish it is also completely different... For me the Spanish version is NOT about Elsa (Spanelsa if you will) being sad about what she left behind, or trying to act like she's fine when she isn't. She IS sad about running away, but then stops to look at her past life, and realizes she had to constantly hide her own feelings and thoughts, then questions if it was worth it and decides "No, it wasn't worth it." and embraces her powers as a part of herself, even if it means people will hate her, or that she will hurt others, she won't lie to herself about who she is and instead will look towards the future, loyal to her choice no matter what awaits her. And now I'll show you that I'm right: “The snow paints the mountain today There are no footprints to follow In the solitude, a kingdom, and the queen lives in me The wind roars and there is a storm inside me A storm that came out of me... " ----Spanelsa looks around her and reflects on what her powers have caused. I find of special interest "The wind roars and there is a storm inside me. A storm that came out of me..." for me this sentence has no judgement on whether or not it was a good thing she caused the storm; she's just acknowledging she was the one responsible for this. She's pondering what she's able to do, almost in awe at the power she holds. "What's inside you, don't let it show Good girl, you always have to be You mustn't open your heart Well, it has already opened! " -----Here Spanelsa is unambiguously thinking about how she always had to hide this part of herself, and calls it "You mustn't open your heart " meaning that she sees not being allowed to show her powers as having to hide her emotions and thoughts from people. She’s going over the lessons imprinted on her and starts realizing that actually was quite cruel to put this pressure on her. "Well, it has already opened!" is a declaration of defiance. By using her powers, she’s opened her heart. She's finally showed everyone what she really is. "I am free, I am free I can't hide it anymore I am free, I am free Freedom without turning back Who cares? It doesn't matter to me now A great storm is coming... The cold is also a part of me. " -----"I am free, I am free." same as the French version, a clearly positive exclamation. However, what is really interesting is the line "The cold is also a part of me. " Not "The cold never bothered me anyway" not "The cold is the price of freedom" but "The cold is also a part of me" This is who I am, this is the person I've always been, it's a part of me and that's just a fact, I must accept what I’m able to do. I must accept myself. "Watching over the distance, so small everything is And the fears that bound me, I left them far away! I will prove what I can do, without limiting my ways Neither bad nor good, nor obey, never! " ----"Watching over the distance, so small everything is and the fears that bound me, I left them far away!" For me this sounds like she's looking at her past, everything she thought was so important, her fears, the expectations, a childhood hiding herself, and realizes none of these things were ever as important as she thought they were, not if it means sacrificing a part of her own heart. The chains that used to hold her back were not as heavy nor strong as she thought they were. "I will prove what I can do, without limiting my ways. Neither bad nor good, nor obey, never!" Here she's explicitly stating she wants to just be herself and achieve her full potential. Spanelsa is overjoyed at the prospect of facing the future and discovering what awaits her. "I am free, I am free ! The wind will hug me ! I am free, I am free ! They won't see me cry! Strong like this, I stay here ! A great storm is coming... " ----While here Spanelsa acknowledges she IS sad at the prospect of leaving everything, it's portrayed as a necessary sacrifice she will recover from. "The wind will hug me." Again, going back to how the cold is a part of her. It's not a price to pay, it's not a sacrifice, the cold is in this song a source of comfort. By saying the wind will hug her she proclaims she is finding solace in expressing this part of herself she had to hide. Even though she's sad about what she's leaving behind, she will be ok. She has something to hug her. Also "Strong like this, I stay here! " She isn't staying here because she HAS to. She has decided she will stay, because even though a part of her wants to go back, and even though it's sad to say goodbye to her kingdom, she has reflected on what her life was like before and has decided It is not worth it. “Through the wind and the ground my power will bloom My frozen soul in will break frozen fragments New ideas soon I will cristallize!” ---This is also really different from the other let it go versions. Spanelsa speaks about her potential, how her powers still have space to grow, and then with “New ideas soon I will cristallize!” expresses a positive attitude at the prospect of this self-discovery journey she’s gonna start. She doesn’t know what she will become, but it will be NEW, and she can’t wait to find out what her new life will be like. What her new self will be like. “I'm never going back, there's nothing left back! I am free, I am free I will rise like the dawn I am free, I am free The ideal girl is gone! Strong like this, in the sunlight A great storm is coming...! The cold is also a part of me.” ----Here she ends by stating she won’t go back, not because she can’t, but because there’s nothing left there for her. The life she used to have she now realizes was empty, and now that she’s free she will never go back to hide her own heart. “I will rise like the dawn” “Strong like this, in the sunlight” “A great storm is coming...!” are all statements about how she will rise from this experience stronger than before and live to be her best self. One that doesn’t have to hide herself from others. One that accepts that… the cold is also a part of her. Thank you for coming to my ted talk

Just left a comment just like this one without checking first, oops. Spanelsa/Latelsa is definitely way happier than Amelsa about this, and not in the "villain arc" sense. I didn't know what to make of the "my power will bloom and break my frozen soul into pieces" part, but I agree that it can be interpreted as rebirth, she will break it to rebuild it into something better.

In Czech the song is called "Suddenly". And is more about liberating her existence from the facade she had to put up out of fear, how she was a "locked box" but now isn't, with "I am mine" appearing frequently. Also at the liberating feeling of just expressing herself "I am blossoming in the storm" "I will try, how powerful I am, to the skies the earth itself will make me ascend". But also the fact that she isn't here in her "Kingdom of Loneliness" because she wants to and how she feels in this paradoxic moment, "The wind howls, the thunder storms, in the heart of my own." "My anger I whisper out into this silent cold." and my favourite two: "Suddenly, suddenly my tears now jewels are." "My cold soul shines with crystals like a diadem". It's pretty neat, how she goes from "amazing! liberating!" To "I AM THE RAGING STORM" but translation yeah.

I don't think it's about Frelsa being "more interesting" or "better" at all. If anything, ExPoint seems to be trying to convey the differences in the delivery of repression because it _is_ notable. It highlights that these are different characters and that the movie as a whole, which centers around this issue, is changed pretty majorly because of the build up of these small differences. It's up to you which is better, but analyzing how Elsa's psychology contributes to that is worthwhile in conveying why you specifically like one version more or less, or even just a specific part of a version. It's also just interesting from a psychological and linguistic perspective for me, but that's neither here nor there.

I took it as an exuberant opinion Like yeah there was no evidence presented for the French version being better so It feels like just a mood setter/excited side note. the video was kinda too short to have clearly defined terms like an academic paper so it’s up to interpretation :/

I gotta agree with iamtwoawesomes on this. It's his opinion being stated, not an objective statement on the actual movies themselves. He didn't say anything in the video about "American version is worse because X" so I don't take it to mean that there's an inferior version that we can all agree upon

@@thetimewalrus7424 I'd say that that part, considering his "that's what this world has come to" line right after it, is more of a lampshading on the clickbait title he has to succumb to due to The Algorithm™ (along with the short length of this video), rather than an actual declaration of perceived fact.

Let it go is similar to Hakuna matata in that it's a fun song that out of context seems had to have a positive message but within the context of the movie is about how the character is wrong and is making the wrong choice. It's easy to interpret either of them in a positive way but context matters. The French version is just a different way for Elsa to lie to herself

Interesting to see how a movie changes when it comes to a different dub For example, in greek, The song kind of sounds like an empowering song but also a villain song she doesn't say "Let it go" she says "And I forget" as for the line: I'm never going back she says: "My hollow past, I'm telling him goodbye" And instead of "Let it go! I'm one with the wind and sky" she says "I become with the sky" The first chorus line goes like this "And I forget, I forget I'm not looking back I forget them and I go forward I'm starting my life That's enough I cut the rope, and let the world freeze The cold doesn't bother my heart" and the final chorus goes: "And I forget, I forget I'm not going back to the old stuff I forget them, and I wave at my new self Alive, like the sunrise and the world freeze! The cold doesn't bother my heart"

It's a breath of fresh air to get some analysis videos in my system again; been in a foggy sort of mental state, and going through re-runs of Eyepatch Wolf or Nerdwriter's old content didn't seem like the best idea, so I figured I'd catch up with your repertoire, dear Ex. Point. And this one's got me looking for an entry point in discussion! I've long bemoaned Frozen from a critical standpoint, and so have left it in the wastebin from an analytical standpoint. Compound this with my lack of bilingual ability and your continued investigation into dubbed works has left me with a more nuanced appreciation of the film, even if it still irritates me for the impact it's had on the Western animation industry as a whole. So thank you! On to part deux.

In Spanish the song its called "I am free". It says "you must not open your heart, but now it is already open" "my power will bloom and break my frozen soul into pieces. I will cristalize my new ideas. I will never come back, there is nothing left behind" and "the cold is also a part of me". I think it's not about how much freedom is worth the isolation and how little she cares , and more about how she can't hide her need to be free and accept herself so even if she wanted to come back she can't because she has been liberated. "The queen lives inside me" but she can't repress herself again to furfill that role. She doesn't sing "Turn away and slam the door. I don't care what they are going to say" but "Freedom with no return. what difference does it make, I don't care anymore". It's not about she not caring about them, it's about she not caring about the past in general.

In Bulgarian in "Let it go" she says "I put an end" as for the line: I'm never going back she says: "I will stop to be rob of old self" And instead of "Let it go! I'm one with the wind and sky" she says "To the sky I fly" The first chorus line goes like this "I put an end, I put an end I can't continue on I put an end, I put an end and I close that door It's late, I there's no way I can stop I call the blizzard I control the cold and I'm not afraid" and the final chorus goes: "I put an end, I put an end I knew tomorrow is rising in me I put an end, I put an end and I feel good here I stand, and there is no way I can stop I'm calling the blizzard I control the cold and I'm not afraid" Although I'm trying to figure out the meaning of the song

The latin american spanish let it go is also more possitive, "let it go" is replaced by "I'm free (now)", and "the cold never bothered me anyway" is replaced by "the cold is also a part of me", latelsa embraces her powers, and she wont let anyone tell her she is a monster because of them

In latin american spanish she says "i'm free" instead of "let it go" but she also says "the cold is a part of me too" insetad of "the cold never bothered me anyway" and instead of saying that she's one with the wind she says that the wind will be the one hugging her jusr before saying that they'll never see her cry and that sounds to me much more like she's already missing her past life but waiting for a better moment to deal with everything btw, i've been wanting to see this frozen translation essay/dissertation/thing since the dubs vs subs video tbh, i'm so hyped to be able to see it now!

Oohhh can I play too? In French she says “the past has already passed”, not “the past is in the past”, which is a tiny difference, but it shows she’s learning from her mistakes instead of ignoring them and running from them. (Think Rafiki hitting Simba with the stick in Lion King)

So It's a bright and uplifting song and when you read the lyrics the mood plummets like a rock. Reminds me of the "happy songs" that tried to convince you that you were watching a happy show and then _nope!_ It was actually the main character saying goodbye to her best friend because they won't see each other again for a _literal eternity._ (distinct from "will never see each other again", by the way.) P.S. The version of Let It Go that I remember is the TwitchPlaysPokemon version.

I think the song is suppose to relate to how her life used to be and how it at the point when she sings the song. For example, the opening verse about 'a kingdom of isolation' is how her life was in palace while her saying 'let it go' is her realising that she has to let go of her past and embrace who she is (a powerful ice mage) if she's going to have any kind of a future. The song speaks volumes to me because I had a very unhappy childhood yet when I moved away from all that I was still unhappy and couldn't understand why. It was my flat-mate that told me that my troubled upbringing was like 'a devil on my back' and I had to let it go NOT for their sake but for my own sake or else I would spent the rest of my life miserable and bitter. She knew a lot about letting go of the past as she'd become a 'lady of the night' after her family and friends disowned her for being a lesbian. As someone who was just coming to terms with my own sexuality hearing about her getting disowned for something my parents had no issue with really put my 'troubled past' into perspective. (The line 'That perfect girl is gone' was a perfect analogy for how I viewed my sexuality)

This is a really interesting take, and I get why you prefer the French version, but personally the English version will always be the preferred one for me, for an entirely personal reason. Frozen came out towards the end of the worst year of my life, when I was struggling with undiagnosed learning disorders and mental illness, and just coming to the realization that I could no longer do certain things that I had used as the foundation for my self-esteem. The emphasis on and celebration of actively letting go of an imposed, "perfect" version of yourself, and moving on with your life regardless of what other people might say about it, was something I desperately needed to hear.

I think this speaks to how subs and dubs can be different despite having the same story trajectory. Dialogue is an intrinsic part of storytelling despite how some may downplay this aspect.

I always see this when I'm translating lyrics myself (I have this weird obsession about translating every song I like into german). So, recently I had a song about a lost relationship that the person singing the song is kinda ... trying to let go of (pun not intended) and the first chorus basically says something along the lines of "i understand that you're gone and it makes me sad, but i still wish you a happy life", but I'm always trying to not translate the song 1:1 but rather translate what feelings the song gives me (while also staying close to the message) and my translation turned into something like "i understand that you're gone and it makes me sad, so i'll give all my happiness to you, so at least you can have a happy life". Which I didn't even realized until I read through it again and it just crushed my soul. But I also kinda made the end more hopeful by replacing "don't look back" with "look forward" and "i'll have to learn how to let you go" with "i am finally choosing to let you go".

Your video was so interesting, it motivated me to go to the Hungarian version, my mother language. In it the title is 'Let it be snow' Also the whole song is more like about Elsa feeling guilty for disapointing everyone and regrets the stuff she did , but convinces herself that it will be better far away from the castle. But 'cold never bothered me anyway' is translated as 'there is ice sitting on my heart' and i hate the implications of that one.

the Spanish version (at least Latin American) is even more unequivocally positive, let it go turns into Free I am! and the pat about cold being a price to pay turns to "the cold is also part of me" an amazing statement in which she accepts herself and who she is, embracing that she tried to suppress, there is literally no drawbacks this is who she is and she is happy that way.

Okay so I just heard my country's dubbed version of this song for the first time ever since this movie came out and, honestly, lyric-wise it's a villain song. Totally Start of Darkness vibe. It's called "I'm Free" [Pt-Br] and it comes with amazing phrases such as "Cover, don't feel, they'll never know; But now they will", "Time to experiment; I'll test my limits; Freedom has finally come for me" and "I'll not regret what was left behind". And, of course, the chorus: "I'm free; Can't hold back anymore/ I left to never return; It doesn't matter what they'll say/ They won't see me cry/ It's time to change" with the beautiful ending "the storm will come (and) the cold won't bother me anyway." Alternatively, "The storm will come" can be read as "Come, storm" in casual language. Honestly, I like it a lot more this way. Wish they'd kept Elsa as a villain like in the first drafts. It would have been awesome having her sing Let it Go as her backstory.
