Unlike commercial service that store your photos in the cloud and scan/index them to train their machine learning models and collect ad targeting data on you, LibrePhotos keeps all your photos and metadata on your local machine. Your data is never sent to or stored on a 3rd party server. Get the same power as those commercial services without giving up your personal data and privacy.
In this video I contrast this service with Immich and Piwigo, looking at some of the features as well as potential shortcomings, before touring through the interface and the available menu settings.

Awesome work! That's what I call a review and comparison, wonderful! If you are into photos, self hosting and things, this actually is very useful information what system / application to test drive and maybe even avoid right from the start. I've seen some of your other videos as well, the world needs more content like you do.. o) Like + Sub, thank you and have a nice day! o)

Wow thanks! I do try keep it down to Earth to give a feel of what any user would experience when using it. Hope you have a great day too!!

I'm in the process of picking a self hosted photo storage system and your detailed analysis helps a lot to see the pros and cons of each one. Thak you!!!

So far one of the best open source I've seen. Which algorithm did you use for classification?

I'm not running it right now as I'm testing Memories photos. But I checked my config files and nothing is hard coded for classification at all. So all I can show really is what I showed in the various menu settings from 42:22 in the video.

Thank you! Yes, I know the videos can be a bit long, but I feel it is important to cover all that can be said at the time. It also saves others so much time, maybe not having to install something that does not suit them. I realised, too, that online demo sites don't really let you test everything properly.

@@GadgeteerZA it's a feature, not a bug 🙂

It's the best one I found that it could be installed without docker... if you know other better without docker, I'm open! thanks :)

I think Memories for NextCloud may also work, but I need to review it soon still.

Thanks for a great walkthrough! I am running TrueNAS where I have my photos, and right now the closest to this I have is PLEX (not really close at all!). If I want to run LibrePhotos - can I point that straight to a folder in TrueNAS and get these benefits, or should I first set up NextCloud on the NAS, and then use that integration? Thanks :)

You could point to it yes on TrueNAS as long as that location can be accessed from the LibrePhotos container - I did that for my existing Piwigo photos by mounting that remote location as a volume when creating the LibrePhotos container. Only thing is LibrePhotos seems to only have one scanphotos location (if I'm remembering correctly now) per user account. I think Immich may have allowed multiple to be added. Reason why I say this is, that if you were to upload new photos into LibrePhotos, they get physically uploaded then to the root of where you mapped into TrueNAS. I'd test it first just to see if you'd be happy with that. Photos I uploaded into LibrePhotos were on my Piwigo location, but not visible or usable by Piwigo at all.
