I'm passionate about technology, gadgets, environment and open source software and how these can be used in everyday life, or for businesses. I also cover some alternative social media to the usual Big Tech ones. You can bookmark this channel at youtube.com/@GadgeteerZA.
I also publish daily tech blog posts at gadgeteer.co.za/blog with an RSS feed that can be subscribed to. My hosting site is entirely ad-free and 3rd party tracker free, and the little income I get from this RU-vid channel helps to subsidise those hosting costs, which I pay for myself. Hello. I can't record my PC video game screen under Windows 10. I play "War Thunder". When I start recording with this freeware it only records the Windows screen and no the in game video. How can I do this please?
Always good to hear from another War Thunder player ;-) OK I'd try switching it's video capture between fullscreen, window and area. Window for example needs focus on the window itself but the other two modes may work better. I noticed on my PC if I click on anything else, War Thunder minimises. I actually used OBS Studio last time I did some captures for War Thunder.
One thing I've found that it doesn't work if any of the device is connected to a guest network. Both of the device must be connected to a primary or non guest network to make any transfer. Or is it maybe cause my guest network doesn't have any password so it thinks it's not secure to make a transfer. There must be some kind of error message that explains what might be wrong. It took me a while to figure these. Edit: Few things yet I am not confirmed is that if it can transfer without any wifi plan thats active. Or any huge files. Or can it transfer through a network created by a mobile hotspot, etc.
No it won't know about passwords, but both devices do need to be on the same LAN or accessible between local networks. So if your guest network is isolated and only has Internet access (no visibility) of other devices on local network) then it won't be able to establish a local connection. Same goes for a mobile hotspot - those connect out to the Internet only. LocalSend keeps things local for better security. If a device connects to the local WiFi on your router, it should see other devices on your network fine. Guest networks can be setup often to see other devices, but not everyone wants that active.
hi , im in Durban, i got myself 2x Heltec devices, i upgraded their antennas to the 868mhz 5DBI antennas, i cant seem to see anyone else, do you know if anyone else in the Durban area is using meshtastic ? i have used the EU_868
OK all your settings sound right. The only way to see is if people have publish to map on then they'll appear at meshmap.net/ if they have a location set as well. Right now I'm not seeing anyone but the thing is to leave one of your nodes on so that others may see you. You'll also see them appear in your nodes list if at any time they are seen by your radio. You could also try going to any location that has a view over the city, and run your radio from there for 15 to 20 mins and see if you see any others.
It depends on what country you're in, but if in South Africa the choices are a bit limited - I put some links in my webpage at gadgeteer.co.za/hamradio/meshtastic-in-south-africa/ for SA. Just bear in mind whether you are in the Europe Africa region for 868MHz or the USA which I think is 915MHz.
Thanks, yes pretty sad about our last Spitfire that crashed in 1995. There are still attempts to get it flyable again but it has been quiet for a while - see www.key.aero/forum/historic-aviation/147151-saaf-museum-spitfire-5518-rebuild and from 2021 at www.defenceweb.co.za/military-history/spitfire-5518-restoration-progressing-despite-covid-hiccups/. I feel really privileged to have seen it actually flying.
In case anyone wonders about the barrel roll I did in the Rooivalk helicopter... it does do 360 loops etc in real life - see ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-k0v9GWlkbxM.htmlsi=pe7nHWullgrq5VCl&t=80
does it copy the contents of the mounted external library ? if so how do i know its done copying? Ive done this but I can see that the images path are still in the external library and not saved inside the immich library.
FreshRSS (which I've been using as my primary solution) has now got short text excerpts/snippets in the feed from their May 2024 update, which is really useful. See screenshot at imgur.com/QbVwin8.
youtube.com/@GadgeteerZA Thanks for the overview, we're also looking using the hardware up in the Pretoria region, would be great to get into contact to understand where and how you sourced your hardware and any advice to get up and running with a permanent gateway/node acting as a relay in the area.
Sorry I see now your comment got held for review (no idea why). But we did get in contact. Yes definitely a high site though if possible, as it really gets all nodes in contact with each other. For example in Cape Town we have one node higher up (can't say exactly where yet as paperwork must be approved) and it connected me (on Cape Flats) to a node in Stellenbosch 32 km away. Other thing in the beginning is to maybe increase max hops to 5 or 7 so that you can reach further through some nodes until you have a few in the area and then drop it again. But I have one node above my roof and one in the house so that already uses one additional hop. I did also describe my home setup in my webpage at gadgeteer.co.za/hamradio/meshtastic-in-south-africa/ as well as some sources. The ham radio guys have been quite keen to get involved so it may be worth trying to get in contact with one or two in the area. You can reach them at www.parc.org.za/ and maybe ask they announce something about Meshtastic to their members. I wrote an article in the Radio ZS magazine for hams in the May 2024 edition about Meshtastic. We try to also at least have the MQTT uplink enabled for Channel 0 the LongFast channel, so that locations are advertised at meshmap.net/ for others to see where the nodes are.
LOL you're ahead of me here, as I've not used it on mobile yet. What I'd suggest, though, is to look at the project for the mobile version at github.com/yang991178/fluent-reader-lite. They don't discuss the UI specifically, but you can log a new issue for some guidance on the usage, and someone using it will be able to guide you a bit.
Thank you! I'm using Manjaro Linux with the KDE desktop it has various Desktop Effects and this one was called Track Mouse which you can enable or disable with a shortcut key combo. No sorry I'd not done on audio filters for OBS as I struggled a bit myself - I did do some filters for the microphone but it was pretty complex (after watching other videos) and I do find it can be a bit choppy especially if I run many other things in the background (clearly the more filters, the more processing). But I'm using the basic included filters in OBS for Noise Gate, Noise Suppression, Compressor, Expander, Gain, and Limiter.
@@GadgeteerZA thx for the reply ! I really like your newsletter btw. I’ll look into the track mouse, I’m running a vm with kali (don’t know what I’m doing tbh ) just to be “cool”. I went through about 20 audio tutorials , my fav is one called something like “make any mic sound expensive in obs | mic settings and filters 2023). “ I just finished my first recording with a poor usb mic, and recorded it with a canon m50 and rose mic, going to import into Davinci (which I still don’t know how to use hehe) and go from there. Btw, mad respect on your newsletter not accepting sponsorships bc of your open source philosophy, you’re a legend.
I really can't say, as I got rid of my iPhone a year back. I do know iOS is quite aggressive about background apps. It may be worth asking on their Discord channel at discord.com/channels/1100157156742926406/1100157157669879921 or their GitHub project.
Good point! I'm still struggling to decide and really need to re-watch all my videos about this. I love Memories actually and especially the way it sits (and accepts) the photos inside of Nextcloud, but the commenting system is horribly clunky as it uses Nextcloud's file comments. I imagine the comments are robust as it uses what works well, but if a UI could run the comments in front it could be a winner.
Good to know. Honestly, I never used the comment features much. Once in a blue moon I'll send something to my mother-in-law she'll respond back with a heart on Google photos
Then I think Memories will serve very well. The end user app also works well on a phone with album views etc, or just sending a plain link which I use for my more tech-challenged family.
@@GadgeteerZA That's what I was thinking. Thank you for all your life information! Now my hangup is the latest next cloud install on TrueNAS is having issues
Excellent video! Unfortunately I have just learned all this stuff „the hard way“ with google searches and other yt videos. Had I watched this very video earlier would have greatly shortened my journey. 🤷🏼♂️
Which photos solution if your favorite today? I'm looking for a iCloud and Google Photos replacement, but Immich ios app has issues backing up (570 items out of ~13k in two days); I can't get external library to work (windows-docker).. and the files are stored in a complicated folder structure.. overall a pain. Did not try others.. but I was really hyped about Immich.
I've honestly not made my mind up yet (and had some issues again with Piwigo's 3rd party modules being outdated and had to disable some of them). Memories looked really promising as it uses the existing photo structure in Nextcloud with virtual albums overlaid above that, but the commenting is really clunky as it uses the underlying Nextcloud file commenting. It was the next closest to Immich's look and feel otherwise. So, I'm really going to have to review all my videos again to get a better feeling across all of them.
Awesome work! That's what I call a review and comparison, wonderful! If you are into photos, self hosting and things, this actually is very useful information what system / application to test drive and maybe even avoid right from the start. I've seen some of your other videos as well, the world needs more content like you do.. o) Like + Sub, thank you and have a nice day! o)
Hello, what's the point of immich, I don't understand much, the BACKUP of the photos with the Android APP on the cell phone are saved on the server, in my case I use IMMICH with Unraid, but when I enter the Immich WebUI, the photos are not seen from the cell phone, from what I see they are saved in some folder, but they cannot be seen as they are on the cell phone, so how could the cell phone photos be seen in the IMMICH WebUI? Another thing, how can you recover those cell phone photos that are on the server as BACKUP to the cell phone back in case they are lost on the cell phone? Thanks!
Yes it's more a backup to self-host and view/share your photos outside of the Big Tech hosting environments. That auto-backup is more an auto-upload, as it does not actually restore as a function. The photos get sorted into albums, and you can also upload from desktop into Immich hosting etc. If you wanted to "restore" a few photos, you'd download them from Immich to your phone from inside the app. What is seen in the Immich app UI is the photos on the hosted side, not the phone. Personally I use Syncthing to sync all my phone photos/videos to my desktop, and every few days I delete them from the phone.
@@GadgeteerZA Thanks for your answer, well I think that after having tried Immich I think I'd better stay with Nextcloud for now, many thanks to the creators of Immich.
OK I don't have an iPhone or Windows PC, but on Android if I hit send button, then media button to open folder, from that list of photos or files I just touch each one to select for multiple. It adds it to a batch to send together.
Yes, not sure of the exact model but it has the voice activation too: Additionally, in Cape Town, South Africa, several Modulator sirens are installed which use their standard wail tone to alert citizens in the Melkbosstrand, Duynefontein, Blaauwberg, Table View, Robben Island, Atlantis, Philadelphia and Parklands areas in case of any emergency which can occur at the Koeberg Nuclear Power Station.] These Modulators are tested for about an hour annually on the first Wednesday of March during a so-called "Full Volume Siren Test" using a preset female voice (which reads "This is only a test; there is no need to take any action. This is only a test; there is no need to take any action. I repeat: this is only a test; there is no need to take any action. Listen to Good Hope FM or Kfm for further information") and live voice announcements (which are read by people and are often cite similar things said by the preset voice), other than the typical wail tone of the Modulator.
@@september40th471 I'm not sure specifically here but generally female voices, with a slightly higher pitch than males, are more easily distinguished from background noise.
@@september40th471 No idea - this clip was just a short clip my daughter sent me. But I would not think they would use two different voices. Most announcement systems at all airports and trains I've been in are usually a single voice. Most of these locations also want fewer announcements and noise, so all efforts are about reducing duplication and repetition.
Yes it's not the ultimate PDF editor at all, but it is great for quick and simple stuff. Not sure if I'm recalling correctly, but maybe it was Okular filling in garbage into form fill fields, I used to print the form to PDF, then open to complete in Okular.
Thank you. Yes that was the reasoning behind it. I'm planning to also do a short one on what the mobile app interface looks like, and what you can do with it. Really to give a feel of what it looks like to actually use.
On the Range Test page there is an image of a Google related tool used to help find the long distance ranges, that has an option to check for a Flat (I have to do this for censorship) Earth. Now why do you suppose they would do that if Flat (I have to do this for censorship) Earth was not a possibility? I don't see other shapes like a cylinder which is what the Mercator projection is based on. This idea of a Flat (I have to do this for censorship) Earth being given equal consideration in the tool must be pretty important.
OK not sure as my range test page in settings only has options to enable it, interval, and save in .CSV format. I'm on latest Beta so maybe you're on Alpha version? Radio frequencies tho do depend on Earth curvature as high frequencies are only straight line of sight vs lower frequencies (not Meshtastic frequencies) which are HF and can follow the curvature of the Earth by bouncing off the ionosphere. So as far as Meshtastic goes - it really only works in straight lines, unless you can reach a far mountain peak with a node on top, and then relay to nodes far on the other side. But even for 100km that is still pretty flat ground.
@@GadgeteerZA The claim "HF and can follow the curvature of the Earth by bouncing off the ionosphere." is in interesting one in that 1st, it commits the logical fallacy of begging the question Earth is a sphere and 2, There are no known experiments in physics to validate the claim of anything bouncing off of a layer of gas in an open system where that gas fails to obey the 2nd law of thermodynamics and expand into the available volume of lower pressure. I'm a shortwave guy not a ham but I have seen hams make such claims without scientific validation. Fun fact you can look up - The idea of an ionosphere was not created (it was not discovered) until after Marconi's radio test between England and New York. It was said by the mainstream scientists of the day it would never work due to Earth being spherical. Poof, it worked. Suddenly the radio buffs needed a reason why it worked in keeping with their heliocentric belief. Thus, the Ionosphere was born.
@@DivergentDroid the ionosphere did not just appear then, it was really only discovered after radio waves were invented and could be experimented with, and it was observed how waves that travel in straight lines only, could sometimes bounce long distances. I am a radio ham so had to study all the theory of radio propagation at different frequencies as well as power and bandwidth levels. A lot of what radio hams do is experimenting with radio, so we have radio beacons, and low power signals that are sent out 24/7 and we monitor when and when they are received elsewhere on Earth. Each frequency band ha sits own characteristics in how it propagates,a nd it is quite fascinating. That experimenting also includes bouncing VHF signals (line of sight) off the moon when it is present, to reach further to locatiosn you cannot see ove rthe horison (no moon, no reach). So hence why we are interested in Meshtastic as it is straight line of sight only, but it's relay capability let's it get around all sorts of objects.
@@GadgeteerZA Do you realize all you have given me is still a never before validated claim? I have heard the explanation hundreds of times. Explanations are Not scientific evidence. I Need the Physics. If you cannot show me the physics, then all you have is a Belief not substantiated in reality. Show me - the "physics to validate the claim of anything bouncing off of a layer of gas in an open system where that gas fails to obey the 2nd law of thermodynamics and expand into the available volume of lower pressure." I want to see the physics demonstrations that prove the claim.
I think you are taking us way off the topic here, and I'm not making any claims. The video is about Meshtastic line of sight radio - it only connects to what it can see in a straight line (I never claimed anything else for this radio). You asked about the Range Test page - was that the one in the Meshtastic mobile app config settings labelled Range Test? As I said, my app's config page only shows the three settings I mentioned, and no link to anything external. The Range Test is intended to generate signals on one radio, with the other one receiving them whilst in Range Test mode. Those can be saved to a CSV file and imported into a spreadsheet to analyse. I haven't used it myself yet, but the idea is to walk around a neighbourhood, doing this test, and then seeing what the signal strengths look like at say 100m, 500, 800m etc to see where the signal works or not.
Thanks!!! Yes two ways: 1. Obviously, just adding tags in metadata and filtering on that. 2. But you mean for People View: Click on that Person with question mark icon at top right when in People View. It will highlight some faces with a green square in photos there. Select just those photos with the same face you want to ID. Then click on the icon top right that has small arrow to right saying Move to Person. If a person is not already present, then click on + to add them, and move. But that is only for faces it recognises as faces. You can't manually draw around a face and add it like Piwwigo does. You can maybe tweak the face recognition parameters under settings though to force it to recognise more faces, maybe.
Not also its recognition runs in batch jobs so object, face, etc recognition may take a while after uploads are done. Under Nextcloud Admin Settings / Recognise, you can see if face recognition has photos in the queue still.
Great video! Do you recommend meshtastic for massive industrial IoT usecases like smart metering where you need a couple thousand meters on the same mesh network?
Thank you. Mmm not sure about a few thousand, but put it this way, you can tweak how often each transmits so typically you reduce that a bit, and you can set an encrypted channel so no-one else is reading the data. The devices transmit incredibly quickly - quick short bursts. The other thing is by default they will each relay signals onwards, but Meshtastic does choose the most direct route. But again you can set a few to relay, and the rest not. So some thought and tweaking is just required. It depends on how far away they are versus concentrated in a smaller space. But you can reach those who will know more at meshtastic.org/ in the Discord or Reddit servers. I'm sure many have actually done something like this.
Glad it was helpful! Yes, I've even found a coffee vending guy interested in setting one up on top of his coffee station near a forest. I'm getting another mobile device end of this week and also hope to use it when hiking.
I've mostly been uploading from my desktop into Memories. But if you have existing photos in your time line you should be able to open them full screen, and then choose from the menu top right to add to album. Or do you mean from folders someone else shared with you?
@@GadgeteerZA its trying to add shared photos that you don't own to an album. I can't get it to work with either photos or memories :( tags work so thats what we have been using.
I'm not too sure of exactly what your situation looks like but remember there is a difference between Memories albums where you have to "link" photos to them in Memories or during an upload, versus Nextcloud shared folders. For the latter, Memories will have to read those photos in if it has access to those folders i the path. That happens automatically as the photos are in NC shared folders. Only thing for that is to maybe change the root folder in Memories, or else move your NC folders. But if neither Photos or Memories is doing what you expect, the problem is maybe not with them, but at the NC folder level.
Not directly as far as I know but a few ideas are: 1. Immich has a feature request open at github.com/immich-app/immich/discussions/6090 2. Memories does not either, but underlying Nextcloud does connect to S3, so that connection may be seen as a "local" connect (not sure). 3. Piwigo may have a plugin called S3Upload that may do something like this. 4. There may be ways to get Docker to create a virtual sync to S3 i.e. so photos app sees it as a locally mapped volume, with something like this at github.com/efrecon/docker-s3fs-client.
v7.1 has already fixed the focus issue within Memories for comments, a day after I posted this video - comments can be viewed as easily now within the Memories app.
I suppose a Lottt of people on Windows 11 and Windows 10 are battling to do the transfter in the direction of Mobile/Android to ==>> PC/Windows. I suppose the biggest trouble for most people is going to be the insane Windows Defender Firewall blocker. That thing can block (protect the PC) regardless of whether you choose (when launching the LocalSend application) to "Allow" BOTH outgoing AND INCOMING connections 🤕🤕 You can even try to manually go into the Defender Firewall settings and manually ALLOW (add) the LocalSend as a Windows applicaiton to use use both outgoing AND INCOMING connections but when it comes to the INCOMING direction . . . Defender Firewall will STILL "Defend" against the incoming file transfer from the phone 🤕🤕☹
Too true on that firewall. I'd be interested though to hear how it goes as LocalSend does seem to find the other device quite well over local area networks.
I'm not running it right now as I'm testing Memories photos. But I checked my config files and nothing is hard coded for classification at all. So all I can show really is what I showed in the various menu settings from 42:22 in the video.
Yes 433MHz will have "better" penetration being lower frequency, but there are some caveats such as in ITU Region 1 I recall we are limited to using only 10mW license-free (well in our country anyway), and if you go higher power as a licensed ham operator you lose the encryption. So what we're finding in our area is that 868MHz is by far the most popular.
This.is.the.video.I.was.looking.for! 👌 Okay, after watching about a dozen videos and getting nowhere near understanding the differences between virtual desktops and activities (and getting a bit frustrated), I now have a much better understanding. The OCD part of my personality appreciates the time and effort you put in. Some plusses: Clear voice, no annoying background music (a pet peeve of mine), no PTSD mouse movements (another pet peeve of mine), and a TABLE of comparison. I love comparison tables!!! Thanks for the chapter markers! Lots of info in this video. I have to watch it a couple of times. Thanks for compiling this stuff and helping me. Can you do more deep-dives like this that showcase the strengths and features of Linux? Especially from a real-world usability standpoint? I use virtual desktops on my Mac mini. Cannot name the desktops natively. Am I missing something? Anyway, I settled on KDE Neon as my daily driver after test-driving 6 distros on my mid-2014 Retina MBPro. Runs smooth and fast with 16G RAM. Waiting for Linux to run natively on Mac Silicon so I can install Linux on my Mac mini. Maybe I missed this, but is it possible to link/sync activities on one Linux computer (e.g. desktop) to another Linux computer (e.g. notebook)? So I don't have to recreate my activity settings again on another computer? Liked and subscribed. 💗
Thanks, that is much appreciated! Yes I try to convey the essence of the video and not worry with studio lighting, makeup, etc ;-) I tend to make videos though about something I learnt, tested or solved, so don't just do them for the sake of daily videos. On naming of the virtual desktops, yes I do see an option on KDE in Settings/Workspace Behaviour/Virtual Desktops. There is an edit icon on the right of each name. There is no real link between desktops but a favourite tool of mine is Syncthing for doing things like that. I did a video about Syncthing just a few videos back. It even works with my Windows laptop, Android phone, and iPad.
