This is from the Konservatorium Wien production of "Hoffmann's Erzaehlungen" I am portraying the role of Hoffmann. Yes most of the time the role is performed in original French but I did the German version which is a bit more difficult since the music was originally composed for the french language. It is an incredibly difficult role that I think in a couple of years I will be able to do it full justice. I was just happy to be able to get through two performances within a three day time span. Enjoy.

A wonderful rendition, an incredible voice and an extremely clear and crisp German pronunciation!

Besides this amazing, fantastic singer, Spyres is a fantastic arm wrestler! I'm in the choir of this video. We used to arm wrestler in the pauses. By that time I used to be very strong and lift a lot of weights, but I had no chance on the arm wrestling with him! Michael, I can't say how much I admire you! I have been following the development of your voice and career since this time. Your voice and technique are just a miracle! BRAVISSIMO!

I agree with a former poster that I'm also not a fan of when this opera is performed outside of the French language - usually. But this production really looks so charming and actually alot more realisitc and period than some of the more professional companies. And your voice (and acting) is just wonderful, Michael. Your voice has a nice strong, but clarity to it and yet it never sounds pushed or strain. Really is gorgeous. I can't wait to see more videos of your work. :D

Simply - WOW! I was a bit skeptical of listening to Hoffmann in German, but your beautiful and powerful voice convinced me to listen. I'm also blown away by your acting, what a great job! I'm looking forward to more videos from you and your great lyrischer tenor voice :)

Perhaps the German born composer might have been quite happy to have his work sung in what was his native tongue. Certainly, the fine young tenor in his admirable performance here does justice to the beauty of the music and the lively character of the aria. What a tuneful delight is The Tales of Hoffmann, in whatever language, when sung, as remarkably well as it is, by these talented students. Thank you fror posting this video.

Correction: I meant to say "this production looks more realistic and to the period, than some of the more professional companies on RU-vid". Sorry for the mistake. :D

Very good for a conservatory production, and surely this tenor is the star pupil. I look forward to future clips.

A great surprise because I know the performance in Liceo, which was amazing but here the song is beautiful to, of course I use to hear it in French,. Fantastic singer and actor. After les Troyens in Strasbourg, Î am anxious to see and hear la clemenzia di Tito.

I think Spyres has done himself a disservice by saying he is a baritenor. It’s fostered unjustified criticism from people saying he is neither fish nor fowl. IMO, he is a very fine tenor.

This is great! For me, the french sounds better in this aria, but even though, your voice is so beautiful and this is so well singed that I didn't care at all! You have so much talent! I bet the world will be hearing about you soon!

how old are you and where do you come from? you are amazing!! this is an incredible production and your voice is really beautiful. I have watched all of the videos posted from this show, including with the girl singer Anne, and both of you are really first-rate excellent singers/performers/actors. bravo!!!!

That's a very well done performance of this piece. I watched the whole opera last week in Cologne (this song was performed in German aswell) and it was just not very good. The singers there were mostly horrible! This "Hoffman" is so much better. And I really think that the Prologue and the Antonia act are simply beautiful in German...maybe that's cos I'm German but nevermind ;)

I think it sounds somehow... authenthic in German. Although of course it isn't. But the story's set in a German principality and the names are in German... So it doesn't sound odd to me. Apart from that, you have a great voice. I'm quite sure the world will hear from you.

beautiful voice and it looks like the aria lies very comfortably, (though we all know the real taxing thing is the duet with Julietta. ;-) ) You also look comfortable with your body and acting. however, exactly since you have this ease, it makes it all the more obvious that you just do what you are told to do at a "perfect" timing. Only the timing is too perfect. Make natural transitions... do not act every damn word... breath in your acting. Take time even if the music fleets you! It does not.

Where may I see the original baritone music sheet version?

You can find it in your copy of The Great American Book of Opera Trolls by the same author who wrote I Hate Her Because She's Not Callas. I'm sure it's somewhere under your rock.

qué lástima, la producción es bonita, pero la orquesta va un poco a su aire...
