@@ericwoodward1833 a souls game meants its made by fromsoftware only which lies of p is not , calling it a souls-like is not a disrespect or anything for you to call it a souls game
One really cool thing about this game is when you beat it and start NG+, you can understand the language some of the puppets were speaking during the boss fights
@@Dan-re2et I realized that the puppet speech was just extremely stylized text when I was still figuring out King's first stage. Blew my mind, such a cool moment for me.
Aye, the text can always be read if you really squint - yet doing that will get you killed. That said, you receive the cipher well before NG+ from Vaninni.
One of the best games to release recently. Not only did the devs release a full product (which is rare now) without needing to fix the game immediately with updates, but they took fan feedback to improve upon itself. The devs are also releasing a story expanded DLC. Edit: Fixed a slight spelling error. Damn you autocorrect.
lmao fr, hearing fascination in the hotel krat uust gives me war flashbacks from mad clown puppet, i remember being so mad when i killed him and discovered there was a stargazer behind him
@@Ghorda9 I disagree. His attacks are easy to parry and he staggers easily. Lies of P in general is easier than most souls-likes if you understand its mechanics
@@gavo7911 some don't seem as bad as others tho. Smaller streamers, relatively, have some decent stuff happening, once you hit a certain level it seems to drop significantly
The fact that a game by a company under everyone's radar developed a game in 3 years that is not only solid in gameplay, but also thematically unique really brings joy to me.
@@muhelectionwasstolen7253 keep it simple, lot of people was looking for forward to game and they're glad it was good game, not a bad one simple as that.
@@Astrqx do you need to reinvent the wheel tho? I dunno why everyone likes that argument, isn't something done well better than a new idea? New ideas can be good, but there are always kinks.
Tbh black rabbit 2 is actually a really good example of a gank fight because they take turns and only attack at once if you get close to the inactive ones.
also the other brothers will say a quote when they're about to gank you (unless you get too close to them like you said), even when you can't them you still know how to respond. It's a great gank fight but people in general don't like those fights so they just write it off. I'd say it's basically Shadows of Yharnam but better.
Did you not get hit by their throwing items? I hated their rematch since every time I was focusing on one of them the other would chuck knives, or grapple me to the other side of the arena. Was that changed after launch or something
@@couchpotato5657 they do still use the throwing items, but the thing is, like in black rabbit brotherhood fight 1, if you focus only on the guy going super aggro on you, the others tend to play quite passively. It's far better to deal with throwing items or the odd grappling hook than all 3 wailing on you. I don't think BRB 2 is an amazing fight (tbh I think it's the most disappointing boss battle in the entire game, save for maybe corrupted parade master) but it's also a very fair fight. You get the "oh s***" moment initially that you're 1v3 but nothing in that fight is really all that bad. Romeos fire combo and Laxasia's everything are way harder to deal with. Honestly the most annoying thing about black rabbit brotherhood round 2 is the rrun leading up to the fight. Edit for clarity: the reason why the fight is disappointing is because it never lives up to the "oh s***" moment. Particularly when the eldest revives, i was expecting a really difficult fight. Was super disappointed when it was just a rehash of chapter 5 eldest, except with like 2 new attacks and his weapon already broken. Very disappointing climax, and doesn't appropriately hype you up for what the alchemists are capable of.
@@catwiffhat4274 I think Shadows of Yharnam is a "better" fight because their movesets are perfectly designed to complement one another so they can all aggro on you without it feeling unfair, which is really a great technical achievement on FromSoft's part, but I really do love the BRB fights. I find them way more fun than the Shadows, or most gank fights apart from O&S. But I have to give credit where credit is due; Shadows are amazingly well-designed.
Im still wondering why more people arent playing this game. Its phenomenal. Very rare do you see an indie company dish out a triple A game with almost no glitches. You can tell the game devs put their entire heart in this project with all the small details, the music, and design. I cant wait to see more.❤
@@Gungrave123 Dog I love this game but ive beat the shura gauntlet in sekiro and had no gripes with "getting good" cause it was fair but before they nerfed lies of p it was brutal You cant just make someone walk on a tightrope in poison gas to kill a butterfly with a million health in 10 seconds while a mob of puppets throw molotovs at them in between two giant robots and a balista cannon firing at them from a mile away and say Just get good bro. Some bosses had no sound or visual Qs before they hit and sometimes the animations were the same for when they either winded up for 8 years or they hit you right away. So it was a matter of learning by death. And I still beat it by parrying. But before the nerfs alot of it was undeniably bs.
I've been waiting for this review, played LoP from the pre-order. It's an absolute GEM. Tough tough game at first but once you get through a little ways you never want it to end. Beautiful music and game design.
Given by time, there'd be a game inspired by the genre fleshing out it's rough edges and executing the formula well, and Lies of P was that game. More so surprisingly coming from an indie(AA?) Studio.
I have a friend that loves Bloodborne, but hated Darks Souls 1 (he blamed voice acting...) I recommended Elden Ring before. Which plays closer to BB? Lies of P or Elden Ring?
On my 2nd run of this game - definitely one of the most fun and memorable souls-like, a great way of making a childhood story relatable today :D The devs' efforts struck gold with this
I am just finishing it up but I don't understand how you can play it more than once, like it's great and all but I can't see myself playing it through more than once.
@@PBart7 I think we'll get the Lies of D(orothy) more than Oz himself. I wonder if the hotel stargazer will become a projector for Oz the great & powerful?
@@PBart7 also, I wonder if the puppet who calls us "his only friend/his first friend" will be our Woodsman/Tinman? We helped him learn emotions yet he was still stuck in place.
Seriously though these devs just dropped an absolute fucking banger souls-like game on the first try, I'd say this game is as good as all the other greats of the souls-like genre.
Gameplay wise I still prefer Sekiro but the atmosphere, story and music of Lies of P makes it better for me than fromsoft's games. Absolutely adored it and can't wait for the dlc and sequel
@@LadyStoneheart312 Sekiro is an incredibly different game in terms of core gameplay. Aside from the usage of prosthetics and tools, Sekiro's fast-paced sword clashing combat differs from Lies of P's more standardized Souls-like parry/dodge mechanics.
@@snazzyjovialwyrm3314 I'd say Lies of P is like a mix of Sekiro and Bloodborne. It's fast and you get those quick dodges but there's also a sort of Sekiro-like rhythm to the attacks as you parry them. Your deflects have to be fast and it's one after another there's no insta-stagger after a parry like in classic souls. It is closer to Bloodborne though I'll give you that, for us at least. I only really deflected when I felt like it, you can do the entire game with just dodges. Sekiro doesn't give you any room for that. I think it would be more Sekiro-like if I had committed to deflects though.
it's no doubt the best non fromsoftware souls game but something about it is missing that makes me not want to play it all the time. idk what it is, it's an amazing game, i just am not that gripped into the story maybe
i love how hard the perfect parries are in this game because it feels like the timing is really strict but you dont have to be reactive with it, you have to press it as the attack lands. idk, i feel like it makes first trying bosses reactively way more intuitive and rewarding
For me the parrying in this game makes barely any sense because you have to memorize the animations e.g. press parry when the elbow is bent "x" degrees rather than pressing it before the attack lands due to bad hitboxes and timing since I always miss the parry even if I know the attacks, so I just roll dodge like it's Elden Ring.
@@yurilopes420The parry-window is only 7 frames from what I've been told which I totally believe. Got my ass smacked so many times when I was sure I pressed correctly.
Glad to see Charlie play through and enjoy the game. A lot of people wrote it off at first and it's actually extremely solid. And props for beating Nameless Puppet - not an easy task by any means. Along with Baldur's Gate 3, this was my favorite game of 2023.
BG3 is a masterpiece but it's also a game from larian studios, so we already expected a banger. This game came from neowitz, a fucking south korean mobile game studio lmao it's insane they managed to create something like this on their first try
It's extraordinary. The first time hearing about this game, I thought it was the silliest concept. The story of Pinocchio set in a souls-like world. I thought it couldn't work. It'd be this throw-away game that gets forgotten in a sea of souls-likes. How very wrong was I.
@@Ghorda9 You don't get the thinking? Most of the general population will know Pinocchio as the character from the Disney film. Try this, google Pinocchio. Now picture that character/artstyle in a souls-game in comparison with all the other very dark souls-likes. That's the silly/absurd perspective that people are having that you can't seem to get. It's the same as if someone said to you "Cinderella souls-game". MOST people will have a "What?!" type of reaction, because what is pictured is the bibbidy boddidy boop Disney movie so they would think it's a silly concept. And then you play the game and find out oh, it has a much darker "Brother's Grimm" origin and the game is created around that.
@@Ghorda9 I know, I’ve read most of them. I just meant making dark fantasy horror games out of classic fairy tales has worked really well before and works really well now.
Lies of P is such a God tier entry in the Soulslike genre. With both DLC and a sequel already confirmed, I am very excited to see where they take the story from here.
@@Jack_InnaBox you are the reason so many people say the souls community is toxic, better to stay quiet than advertise your shitty elitism here, it's a good entry in the genre, especially for their budget.
@@Myhaay He's literally correct, currently soulsborne=dark souls 1,2,3, bloodborne, sekiro, and elden ring. They're souls-like games made by fromsoftware.
Elden Ring is such an amazing achievement, but I think I preferred the more linear nature of Lies. Every play session was just immediate and satisfying. Easily the best 'Souls' game not made by From Software and I eagerly await what the studio do next... 😀
@@adan1221 DS3 and all soulsborne from FROMSOFTWARE don't have a real music with singer and real human languahe lyrics.. all they did just opera music like Final Fantasy and other RPGs.
Completely agree! Absolutely loved this game and can't wait for the sequel. It really reminded me of Resi 4 in terms of tone and setting which I really didn't expect.
This reminds me of my favourite Pinocchio quote where he replies to one of his iconic friends in the critically acclaimed movie known as Shrek 2 in which they ask him to say "i am wearing women's underwear" and Pinocchio gives the most perfect reply of " IM NOT" but his nose still grows.... Extremely entertaining
Unfortunately, the Koreans who made this didn’t quite understand the cultural context of Pinocchio in the modern day and in all versions of it, which is the fact that when he lies his nose grows. Except in this game, he CAN lie. Which is stupid.
@@ferretyluv Your missing the whole point then. the devs are aware of this and made the whole goal of the game aimed at humanity. P is a puppet, and puppets can't lie because they're not humans, they're programmed. P is one of the few puppets who have free will and his journey is to become human and feel emotions, lying is a big part of it. Also the more he lies the more his nose grows which is valid, but i won't spoil in which way it is depicted in the game.
@ferretyluv even tho pinnocio isn't supposed to lie. I do think it makes sense here cause every other puppet can't lie and that's what makes it different from pinnocio cause he's more like half human half puppet
Charlie talking about holding in a poop causing him to not need to poop is totally a thing. Your body has a certain window in which it is “prepared” to poop. If you hold it in then that window passes, and you’ll no longer have to poop. People only have a few of these windows per days

Mine too. I have been loving it and the story is really fantastic. So much tragedy but some true redemption moments as well. I have enjoyed watching some lore/theory videos as well.
I want to take a moment to appreciate the editors, he finished this playthrough yesterday and there's already a well edited video of his entire playthrough.
I am near the end of my NG+6 playthrough and it is just such a well made game. Once you get used to the mechanics then it just opens up to you in so many ways especially once you find the build that works for you. Glad that you had fun with it Charlie
Bloodborne has been my favourite game since it came out and this is a close second. Really excited to see where they go with Dorothy and potential other characters. Shit is going to be crazy when they have a Phat budget for the next game😀
Man I played bloodborne for many hours but it kicked my ass. Never played a souls game or anything like it, I'm going to start it again and look up some tips this time. There was little to no info when it released but I know that's changed.

It's crazy we got an amazing, solid full content game from a Korean Dev. They arent exactly known for not nickel and diming. Lies of P deserved to be nominated for goty way more than Spier-Mid 2
I'm genuinely surprised to learn Charlie hasn't finished Lies of P, I saw the moist meter( or was it a mini one?) and assumed he had played start to finish. Lies of P isn't 100% without flaws, but goddang is it certainly a masterpiece in my eyes. Its so lovingly crafted, and its also the most underrated overrated underrated game, I love it.

This game was my personal GOTY. LoP truly is a masterpiece. Neowiz understood the assignment better than ANYONE that isn't Fromsoft and executed it FLAWLESSLY. The combat is perfect, it feels amazing. This is coming from someone who never parries, and beat the game multiple times both pre and post patch.
Never heard of it before I watched Charles play it for 5 seconds in October. I was one of the ones saying "play lies of p, play lies of p" until I bought it & beat it twice in like a couple weeks it was so good. I can't believe he never finished it when it came out.
as i get farther and farther into this game it’s becoming my favorite soulslike/fromsoft game. i hope the devs that made it keep doing stuff like this.
I watched Charlie doing this live. It was fun watching him having fun with this game. A Korean company making the souls-like for the first time and you can tell that all of the people involved in the production had actually played all FromSoft originals as they took the widely acclaimed parts of those games together in their own game. Many souls-like games falter because those games are made by majority of people that didn't play FromSoft games, and only going through the checklist of things instead of coming from genuine appreciation for FromSoft games. No wonder this game succeeded where others faltered majorly.
Barely on-topic, but Charlie saying "tan-gel-ah" surprised me. I always assumed that Pokemon was pronounced "tangle-ah" because it's a tangle of vines. Now I'm questioning my entire life.
Dude I went into this game thinking it was gonna be another bad souls copy but after playing through the whole game it has to be in my top souls games ever made it's so good
It's a souls copy in the sense that it mimics the style and design philosophy of Fromsoft and their souls-like games, but it's completely unique in it's own way, the same way Darksouls is different from Bloodborne. If you handed me this game and told me Fromsoft made it I would absolutely be convinced of it from start to finish.
@commanderppfromsoft literally copied the combat style from monster hunter lmao, also aspects from Zelda and many other games. Copying a bunch of different things to make an “original” product isn’t any better
I really liked the weapon crafting, it makes it feel more personal. The weapon i made was a spear, it was made with the assassins dagger blade part and the signpost handle. Extreamly good.
just remember that the handles move set has an effect on the damage types of the weapon itself, so the fire axe handle is bad with the spear because it doesn't have any 'thrust' or 'pierce' animation
The type of game that curb stomps your teeth in but you still leave with a smile on your face... unless it's the green monster of the swamp that dude can smd
Amazing game. Laxasia nearly put me in a coffin as well, insane fight. The quality of this game was infinitely impressive, some of the level design wasn't my favourite but combat was so tight and the story was so much more impactful than i'd expected. Can't wait to see what they do next.
I have been hyperfixated on the damn game it isnt funny. I love it but it took me so long to beat it cause it was way out if my comfort zone. Glad you got to experience this absolute masterpiece.
I honestly loved this game running through ng+6 rn. So much fun, when an enemy is staggered and you need to heavy them throw a shotput and you can get the critical
I really like the dancer's sword handle with the starting two handed sword's blade. Your character lunges forward on every strike which lets you keep your distance a little. It also attacks fairly quickly. Some of the slower bosses i can get off 3 hits. The only problem is that you still have to be in attack range for most bosses. So you've gotta learn to perfect block or dodge but if recommend learning the perfect block. Perfect blocks contribute to fatal attacks and can break some enemies weapons which makes them do less damage.
This is the only game I've gotten 100% where I didn't start to feel bored after multiple playthroughs. I goofed one ending so I had to go through 4 times and I never got tired of it. It's the best Soulslike I've played, with the caveat that I've yet to play DS3 or Bloodborne. DS3 was crashing for some reason so I took a break and Bloodborne is PS4. I'd probably love them too.
Completely agree, every section in this game is equally interesting. Just finished new game + and I honestly had more fun playing this than I did Elden ring.
@@balazsbuki2345they took their time and put passion into it. I followed their development process on Tik Tok and they worked hard to make it a game worth playing.
The weirdest complaint I heard about this game was the amount of two phase fights. But like.. it’s more time fighting bosses and they’re usually a new spin on what you just fought
I think it's a legit complaint, when every second boss gets a second health bar it stops being unique For example Romeo having 2 bars is not a surprise, he's a very lore-important boss and the reveal cutscene adds some drama Laxasia didn't really need two health bars but she is a badass demi-god at this point, and both phases look almost cinematic so it's understandable as well BUT when a bigass swamp monster just walks away unaffected (cos you didn't kill it hard enough I guess) and somehow takes over this convinienly placed dead puppet body... it just feels lame, you know, like they had some leftover ideas and merged two into one This fight should've started at phase 2 but have movesets of both p1 and p2 IMO
@@tr4ktr4k45 I disagree on the swamp monster since it shows that the puppets can be taken over by the corpse/disease which is explore afterwards pretty much till you get to the destroyed hotel. If it just started in the second phase it probably would have worked but been less impactful than seeing it take over the puppet police officer we fought earlier on
Strongly recommend Joseph Anderson’s Lies of P critique for anyone curious on why this game feels as good as it does! Especially when we’ve had so many failed souls-likes who can’t imitate or iterate on the genre very well.
the way i see it, it takes the best attributes of souls but adds just enough spin to it to make it unique enough they cant be sued but where they really go ham is just taking an existing character, creating an overall simple theme, and performing well based on that theme. The story is good enough that if a show came out with the same basic premise i wouldn't mind watching it. I'd say narratively it certainly isn't the most amazing story but it didn't need to be. Bloodbourne had more interesting lore and themes.
Y'know I keep hearing the parry window is super tiny or it's difficult to use. Strangely Lies of P parrying felt more intuitive than Sekiro's. It actually reminded me of DS1's parries which were super easy and forgiving.
This game is so fucking intense and it is giving me shivers through all the boss fights so far (the difficult ones) it asks you for constant attention and learning, it flows so greatly honestly.
This is my favorite Ps5 game and my first physical game I’ve bought since I got my new system makes me proud it turned out so well I love it. I can’t wait for the DLC gonna be 🔥.
When I was fighting with laxasia I had mines and motivity build and I remember I one shotted second phase with full stack mines and thors hammer charged attack (it might be the wrench baton combo too).
Glad I'm not the only one who took like 15 tries on Nameless Puppet. Still, incredible fight, even after the earlier one against Laxasia. That said, Lies of P was my sleeper hit of 2023. I went expecting another boring souls clone and came out wanting more of this gem.
his fight honestly really reminds me of Maliketh from Elden ring. Fairly simple first phase but the 2nd phase literally brings out the same attacks with rotating spinning moves that has the boss spinning around like a beyblade.
I struggled with nameless puppet too, mostly because I relied for the most bosses on the summons to help me out a bit but after 3 hours or so I managed to kill it to get the well deserved true ending
