BIG week! I announced my PTO Comedy Tour, and tickets go on sale Friday 6/11! I’m super excited, and that’s one of the first things I dive into. My favorite thing this week is my pride shirt from… Abercrombie?! (I know, shocking). I also got the BTS meal at McDonalds this week, and I share my not-so-great experience with McFlurrys.
Then my husband and I get into the main topic of the episode, which is life after nursing school. I’m sharing my experience looking for a job after nursing school, and what it was like having my first nursing role as a new grad. Along the way I offer some advice for the new grads as you all navigate your journey as a nurse. You got this!
To provide the ultimate interview guide, I decided to let my husband Brett interview me. Why are these basic questions so hard to answer?? It was a lot of fun, and I hope you all enjoy it and take away a new interview tip or two so you can kill it in your next nursing role.
I’m going on TOUR! Tickets ON SALE 6/11

I graduated years ago. But... I do remember that after working full time nights , being a single mother and nursing school, when I graduated and only needed to work I felt like I had nothing to do. My life in nursing school had every second filled.

I graduated in 1984 and I still remember my new grad ICU classes like they were just yesterday. I have carried that foundation with me for 37 years and counting. Watching this podcast brought back so many of those memories. And, the NCLEX in July 1984... two straight days with a #2 pencil filling in bubbles and praying they were the right answers. Learning I passed is a memory that still makes me smile. Thank you for your wonderful podcast. Your message is timeless!

I took my boards in 1985. Same two day situation. I had to go to the bathroom at a non Break time and there was a proctor watching me use the restroom! They had removed the doors for the test. 😱

I took my NCLEX in March. 35 of the 75 questions were select all that apply. Then it gave me the "testing" questions after....the ones that they are trying to determine if they should add to future tests. They were so much easier to me. They were case studies and fill in the blank but you had a word bank!!
@hathortheshapeshifter
@hathortheshapeshifter 3 года назад
Omg I hope my nclex is the word bank kind or the case study kind. The case study kind seem like you could just go on and kn and miss ten things but not getting dinged for it!
@YouCanDoX
@YouCanDoX 3 года назад
I heard the test will be changing next year to case study questions, I didn't know it already changed
@kellywolfgang1517
@kellywolfgang1517 3 года назад
@@YouCanDoX it hasn't. After you finish the NCLEX now they give you questions that they are testing out for the new style of NCLEX. They do that to determine if questions are appropriate to use, too hard, or too easy. They have always had extra non scored questions mixed in on the NCLEX to use in future test banks. Now you just happen to know that they are the extra questions.
@kellywolfgang1517
@kellywolfgang1517 3 года назад
@@hathortheshapeshifter the case studies build on themselves and gave a much clearer picture of what was going on in my opinion. So you would read a paragraph about the patient, answer a question or two, then read another paragraph about the same case, a few more questions....ect. it just seemed more intuitive to me.

Absolutely love the shirt! And Brett's hat, of course! I just retired, graduated from an ADN program in 1976! Got my first job where I was doing my elective the last day of the elective (Peds) and graduated the next day - white uniform and cap with black stripe! Started on my unit as an "Interim Permitee" after I took the Nursing Boards and waited another month after that for my results. The Boards were two days of exams, went to the location with a bunch of nursing school friends. So that's how we did it in the Dawn Before Time! Keep up the amazing work, you are both wonderful.

I’m grateful for your comment on how you thrive in the higher stress environment because sometimes I question how I would function in a trauma unit when my mind wanders so much in low stress jobs. But that has been my experience too, I just do better when things move faster, I just needed that reminder that that’s a real thing that other people experience, too! 💕

I recently graduated and completed my NCLEX and Im dreading the interview for a new job mostly because I’m a military spouse. My husband is scheduled to be moved next year so I’m dreading the, “where do you see yourself in 5 years?,” question. Like you said, hospitals are investing in the individual so that’s where I feel like I’m not going to appeal to the job.

I work in a public health laboratory. Throughout the years I’ve done testing on soft serve from fast food places. Often when the machines are “down/broken” it’s actually that they tested positive for coliform or high HPC and were shut down by the health department until they clean and pass a retest of the product coming out of the machine.

Graduated in May and was offered three positions in two interviews… I choose ER days, but it is all TENTATIVE based on me passing the NCLEX! Super nervous bc I’m supposed to start soon and still don’t have my test date yet. Plus we will have to sell our house and move 7.5 hours away. Soooo stressful 😫 I really wanted to ask you something from the interview! OMG, what Disney character were you at Disney World???? Or are you allowed to say?lol 😂

Congrats flying on your own! Nerves are good! Use your seasoned nurses as your resources. Focus on your patients and their needs. Try to not obsess with documentation. If your working 12hrs, it ALWAYS gets done. And when you take a restroom break, do a little deep breathing and positive imagery. I know it sounds weird but it works. You’ll do fantastic, promise 🌈
