Superb idea, supporting the REAL bike maintenance enthusiasts, they need all the help they can get because obviously their advertising budgets don't exist! Keep up the good work Sir!
We really do need these motorcycle engineers. Main dealers simply want to sell bikes. My 72 beetle has always been serviced by a local chap (now retired) - you'd not get a vw dealer understand it. Its the same with classic motorcycles - you either learn to do it yourself as I do or find a good local chap. Great and important video
That was really interesting, couple of gem motorcycle repair shops there. Blue Harley was a shovelhead, and a Softail purple Harley deuce. That Suzuki was also sweet the 450 . You should grab her.
Nice one TAYM, great idea for the channel, I've always used an independent mechanic, same one for the last twenty years, certainly a lot cheaper than your dealership's, my local Triumph dealers £110 per hour plus Vat!!! Crazy prices....
You need that Suzuki 450 Taym my poor honda twin 395 dual carb just went down cause of crap fuel 1980 machines burning corn juice.😢 never a party🎉. Hope you get it. Or the Norton trail that would be the one it'd be eyeing.....
Mate you are a Legend they are only 4 minutes from me,yet another handy piece of intel I have got through Ur channel👌see u tomorrow night and thanks again 🏍️😁😎
There ARE a couple of places like this near me, but the problem is that one is so busy, you have to wait months for anything to be done. The other guy is pleasant & cheap, but not terribly reliable. He opens when he feels like it.
Any biker worthy of the name , should be able to service & repair their own bikes . It’s never been easier to get tools & info on motorcycle maintenance , repair & servicing .
My dad owned a garage and recovery business. Workshop covered in engines/gearboxes in all sorts of bits.(1960s). He taught me basic spanner’s which has saved me and my family thousands over 45 yrs. when I do maintenance I am on here or the net for tips and torque etc and that’s one or two jobs on my own cars/ bikes. I am in awe of these guys working on everything all and sundry. Glad ur covering carb probs as it’s killed carbs for me. I repair lawnmowers asa hobby now retired and exactly the same. Nearly all fuel problems caused by modern fuel and ownersignorance leaving fuel in. I used to sonically clean the jets - now chinese carb replacements for £15 on flea bay. And they work! My hat goes off to these guys. On my 2005 yamaha carbed bike I could not source the snorkels and so sold it. Also Yamaha we’re quoting 350 each snorkel. Found this fascinating and engaging. Brilliant We had a motorcycle lift at college ooooh the difference instead kneeling/crawling on floor.
Same as my dad 😁 just great growing up in that environment 😁 Yes desperate for a lift 😁 TAYM the youngest sells car lifts for a living and I keep trying to persuade him to do bike lifts too 😁 thanks Volt 😁
Good morning Taym I’m very lucky coming from a family of bikers I do all my own stuff when my bikes are out of warranty have my huge cave no bike job is to small or to big I’ve even made replica Parts on my lathe. If I was younger I’d open my own bike repair garage up everyone keeps telling me to 👍🏍️😎. But has know I like getting the miles in 👍🏍️😎
Excellent 😁 yes, I think all us old school long term riders have always fixed our own. Its the bloody warranty shit that buggers that up 🤔 and time 😁 thanks Derek 😁
They pay a fortune in the UK 🇬🇧 £90-£100/hr🤬 $180-$200nz be bankrupt in no time with our weak dollar.Luckily main dealers in NZ usually fix any bike, farm bikes etc & hourly price is the same no mater what the bike is or a Honda at a Honda main dealer etc.We do pay about $110/hr for a British Classic Motorcycle Mechanic Specialist.
Well done TAYM for bringing this subject to light. Backsteet sales and workshops can provide a very good service at a reduced rate and they do cater for older bikes that might otherwise go to the scrapyard. To be fair, a main dealer has huge overheads. Look at Orwell's costs, telephones, IT, lighting, heating, business rates, water, upkeep of the building and insurances. Wages and staff costs for workshop, parts counter sales persons, administration cleaning services so the floor is tidy and toilets are usable. When you look at what the weekly costs are and then calculate the profit margin on bike sales it is easy to see why servicing charges can appear to be high.
Absolutely 😁 and they have to have certain specialist equipment which isn’t cheap 😁 but if you have an old bike it just isn’t economical to use main dealers unless absolutely necessary 😁 thanks Dave 😁
Hello TAYM. Great to see these independents still going. Modern fuels are a curse on older machinery. I always drain the float bowls after a spin, or run the engine with the tap(s) off to ensure there's nothing left in the system. That's a Commando 750ss (street scrambler) - the rarest of the commandos !
Did you see the “Nathanthepostman” video talking about something similar - he said is this the death of motorcycles commenting on dealerships closing because the Hondas and Yamahas of this world demanding they spend a fortune redeveloping stores in line with their branding? Also the fact that nobody is training motorcycle mechanics - nowerdays mainly “old guys” like your chap in this video! But let’s be positive and not gestate to a Stuart Fillingham!!!😅
Another great video, I’m unsure of the rules in naming names but we are blessed with a similar “Old School” establishment in the railway arches not too far from Junction 25 of the M25
Mate you are a Legend they are only 4 minutes from me,yet another handy piece of intel I have got through Ur channel👌see u tomorrow night and thanks again 🏍️😁😎
Afternoon TAYM, brilliant video, you can't beat the old style workshops where the lads know their stuff , yeah buy the Suzuki! And that BSA was a beauty, and the Purple Harley was nice too ! I had one of those CB750K's in a dark maroon colour, W reg , it was an ex police bike, still had the white fairing and panniers on it which I took off at the time ,they were bloody awful ! 😅😅 Cheers Mel
These little workshops are great, I have a local guy who I entrust work on my bikes that I don't want to do. Main dealer charge would be hard to justify on my old Honda. That Norton Commando 750 is pretty sweet, I think it could be a US spec street scrambler and the Suzuki 450 would be a great winter runabout.
Handy to know taym interesting I’ve got a Honda shadow 750 1987 that doesn’t work very well I might pop over sometime and see if camellian can do anything about it and that Norton looks an interesting bike wonder if it will be for sale bye for now
Good to see the smaller workshops are still thriving TAYM a much needed service especially with this rubbish fuel they are serving nowadays important for the classic bike owners imo, There is one not far from me that does all sorts of classics always a great visit .👌👍
I have fitted fuel diamond into both my bikes and made a video about it, I got slated by some commenters saying it was snake oil but all I can say is that both my bikes a running fine, the himalayan is 5 years old now and the Vstrom is 6 years old.
Oh yeah, the Norton was my favorite, for sure! After my local H-D left town in the dark of the night I found that their top mechanic from a few years back (when I bought my Ultra Classic in 2018) had opened his own shop in town. Now I take the UC to him. The great thing is Shane is the mechanic I've always trusted the most.
Great video. I’m just round the corner from this in Hunston. I’m riding round on a Mash British Seven 125cc, first bike for nearly 40 years 😂 love your videos 💪🏻👍🏼👌🏼🙏
@daintree2455 £90-£100 oer/hr in Uk 🇬🇧 that's $180-$200nz😲🤬.In NZ 🇳🇿 a car mechanic is about $65/hr & a Bike 🏍 mechanic is $90-$95/hr but NZ is the home of low wages.We don't have E5 E10 we have 91,95,96,98 unleaded fuel.
I put a similar thing on my car back in the day.A Fuelstar Led thing on the fuel lines in my Triumph P.I 2500 overdrive in the late 90's to save skirting led additive in tank at top up like I did with other older cars.
