Sensory overload is a real thing in the 21st century.Everything is amped up beyond necessary.Distraction has become a constant.Most are numb to it all.But the few who notice run to solitude...the only home for ones soul.

A monk told me Monastic life is like a rock polisher: a bunch of rocks with rough edges are thrown together into a bin and rolled around together so they hone down each others sharp edges, and in the end they become smooth and beautifully shiny and polished. That can apply to parish life too, and workplace, family..... Learning to love others even when its difficult is a huge blessing. Thank you SR. Natalia!

This just described my life. I just went from being socially detached after two years of no in-person school to being at a university with 40,000 undergraduate students. All the purity and self-control I thought I had developed vanished in the past few weeks. What a sharp wake up.

What do you mean by purity and self control vanishing? Like did you start doing vices or do you just mean you realized nobody else in society thought like you? I live as a hermit and am finishing up university and when I go back after that summer I always realize how nobody else really thinks like me. I was raised old fashioned. There is the exception to this rule though. St Benedict became a hermit before starting his order. St Anthony of the Desert was a hermit almost the whole time. And some people who are not eligible to join religious communities have found great solace in living as a hermit. But I definitely agree that it does not work as an escape from temptation. Not only would you be tempted by yourself, but also the demons would double and triple down.

@@thehermit761 I think the thing to remember when it comes to a godly vocation, is that we should go where we feel the most attraction. We will find temptation everywhere. But we also don't want to place ourselves into an unbearable temptation. I suppose that is where discernment comes in. I think someone would realize fairly quickly after trying life as a Christian hermit if he was called to it or not.

@@keithmayhewhammond5357 Not so sure, I met a former monk at a beach resort. Looked like a wealthy fella, he’s was puffing an expensive cigar and sipping expensive bourbon. 🥃 he spent nearly three decades as a monk, vow of poverty and two years as a hermit. He’s only in his 50’s and definitely seemed to regret losing 25 plus years praying, pledging and then two years as a hermit. Half his life gone before he woke up. He’s now married, seemed very happy and comfortable doing what he really does best. Indulging in earthly pleasures. 😉🙏🏆

@@gregthomas2448 If the story you present is sincere, I would argue it does not part of the same context. I was speaking of a vocation being realized or not realized within a short time. Your example is not someone who realized he had no vocation as a monk, but rather a story of someone who left the practice of religion entirely for heathenism. Regardless of whether someone becomes a monk or married or remains single, there are many examples of people losing their way. The part I find disturbing about the story you present is that you claim the time spent in prayer was a waste. Rather it is the time spent in heathenistic living that is a waste. Nothing comes of it in this life or the next. That being said, there are a lot of questions that come up from the story you give. How did someone who only started a career in his 50's become wealthy? Why would he brag about leaving religious life if he was ashamed of "wasting" 25 years? What actually made him decide to leave and how did he start a career at 50?
@gregthomas2448
@gregthomas2448 Месяц назад
@@vivacristorey4363 it’s a true story I met him yesterday in Key West at a resort while I was relaxing with a cigar. He joined me and we shared some details about ourselves. He is in his early 50’s I’m in my late 50’s. I attended Catholic school from pre-k through college. I am hedonistic. When he told me his story I found it strange that someone from such a deep religious group after 26 years would be doing what I do. He seemed sincere and shared his contact information. I’m retired LEO so I looked him up and he’s real. His wife works for a billionaire that everyone on the planet knows. I’m holding back his name out of respect, because I’m pretty sure your community is not large. The guy was polite and interesting. Perhaps since we both had a few drinks we shared to much. He really didn’t disclose why he left the vow of poverty. He certainly shared that he is now happier as a married man. I think he’s a good guy. However, we all have demons. It’s better to know the devil you’re dealing with, than the one you don’t know. Today is 5-5-2024. My story is true and factual. I’m a raised Catholic yet I don’t attend church, I also feel a spiritual connection that doesn’t require me to restrain my earthly desires. I’m quite content. You can call me hedonistic, I call it having fun and enjoying life. Oh and helping people ? I served and protected without passion or prejudice for 30 years, so please don’t question my ethics or morality.

The best thing I've found about the recent enforced hermeticism of the recent pandemic, is how much more I love being around people. It's like the fact that food tastes so much better, and regular food can be had with so much more gratitude, after you've been fasting. I can't help but wonder sometimes, if this helped spur Christian hermits' love for their neighbors.

I was a RC nun in a contemplative monastery with papal enclosure & 4th vow ( enclosure). I converted to the Russian Orthodox Church & studied 5 years with a Russian Orthodox bishop & 2 years with a Russian Orthodox hermit monk. I am 75 & a recluse. The 8 passions were originally identified & described by the Ancient Greek Philosophers. St. John Cassian wrote about the 8 passions & their corresponding virtues in his 2 famous books CONFERENCES & INSTITUTES. St. Mary of Egypt could not live in society because of her draw to sexual immorality. She chose a hermit life in the desert, a life of repentance, prayer, & asceticism. This solitude & silence benefited her struggle against the passions. Such a life away from society is not for everyone but for those who can use it to reach the goal of union with God.
@IONov990

I remember reading about Saint Mary of Egypt and I thought she lived her life in extremes - extreme worldliness to extreme holiness. It is easy to think quiet means holy or solitude means piety. It seems like religious life is a continuous effort of refinement. No one ever reaches perfection.

Solitude is not supposed to be an escape, it's supposed to be an intimate experience between you and the Lord. One never becomes a hermit to escape life but precisely because one has a great love for humanity and living like a hermit is one way to express their deep love for the Lord and for others. There may be some who are hermits for selfish reasons...but that does not take away the dignity of the vocation of the eremitical life. BTW, I love Sr. Natalia's voice! It's so calming and peaceful!!

I have often thought this before I was Christian and when I went into the wilderness to the degree I did. And a related thought - what use is it to be enlightened at the top of a mountain? At some point one such monk should come back to the world and apply it. Now I am Christian I want to hear a monastic perspective on this. I must listen to the whole interview.
@jeremysmith7176

That is often a pattern seen through the history of the Church. Also common is for Christians to seek out hermits for guidance. The Benedictine order started when men and women sought out St. Benedict to lead them.

I disagree. We are all connected. Christian hermits are not staying in the desert or the mountain to have a picnic. They are doing it for penance and prayer. It is often the case that God will bring people back into the world to teach. St Anthony of the Desert though remained a hermit his whole life. God brought others to him, but he never sought them out. St Benedict only left his hermit life because God's will demanded it of him. So it really depends. The purpose of being enlightened is to do the right thing regardless of where you are.

All Christians are called to some sort of “monasticism“ in their life. For married people our sins and rough edges bump up against our spouse and our children; we must work through charity living in such close proximity to people constantly. One type of monasticism is adults choosing to live with non-related adults. The other type of Christian life, another monasticism, is populating the earth and being purified through that relationship dynamic. If we are truly seeking Christ, he will meet us where we are at and bring us to Him. God bless this nun and may her passion FILL and take over the “Novus Ordo” 🙏🏼

Life as a hermit has its limits. If you were to live as one be sure to use your time wisely and with each moment achieve enlightenment. Once you achieve enlightenment and self understanding and awareness then you are ready to go out into the real world in peace. Nelson M. Is a great example for he had every reason to have hate within his heart but he chooses to look upon the world with love rather than hate and he was a boxer. ✊🏿💪🏿💪🏿💪🏿

I live in a quiet suburb with a train station that allows me to get into the city centre within 30 mins. Life has been incredibly hard for me, mostly due to mental health issues. I don't have many friends nearby, and finding a job after quitting last year has been difficult. Nevertheless, I am gradually learning to enjoy my solitude by giving up all lofty ideas and ideals. In the process, good and evil have finally left my mind as mere meanderings of an infantile mind. There's nothing. We should be accustomed to that. In the end, the life of a hermit is not necessary, as we can live in cheaper towns and just take walks from time to time. As our transient marches towards its final beat, we will make transient friends along the way. It is ok. We are done here!

A hermit, at least a Christian hermit, is never a monade, but open, connected, caring, and compassionate with other humans. Hermit life is no flight and no escape from life or community, and no runaway from whatever. Hermit life is a call. One of a plurality of different calls. A hermit who is an introvert only might be as wrong on the way as the monk or nun who is unable to live alone, mainly. Hermits just live out one aspect of spiritual life, while community members stress another. All strive to seek God in presence of life, as all Christians are called to, even couples and singles. Warm hearted greetings from a Catholic hermit sister!

Natural minds judge others and repeats. Ecclesiastes 3:15: “That which is, already has been; that which is to be, already has been; and God seeks what has been driven away.” The “natural man” cannot grasp that, for to him reality is based only on the evidence of the senses. The man of reason could justify the verse’s end, saying if it has any meaning then the writer must mean recurrence. The sun comes every day and the moon completes its cycle and the seasons come and go. If we took a picture of the universe today, the scientists can compute how long it will take to return to this point in the picture. So the intellectual man could justify the verse; but that is not what is meant, for it is addressed not to the man of reason or the man of sense, but to the man of Imagination. What is it all about? “That which is, already has been; that which is to be, already has been, and God seeks what has been driven away.”

I have no choice but to be on my own because of ostracism I sense being socially inept and don't fit in; I still speak to ppl when I am out and about Ostracism is evil and cruel and you see weak ppl ; herd mentality who dare not confront injustice and evil, but just go with the flow and shun you. Unfortunately there is zero support and spiritual guidance in the church. Over the past few yrs the person who acted far more Catholic than anyone else is President Donald J Trump................I lost more contacts, go figure

Well said ! Hermitism is unnatural. Real test and ultimate success is to be able to live and deal with people with patience and gratitude while being conscious of God's presence. Quran (I'm one of your Muslim viewers with a lot of respect for your work) informs us that God never burdened children of Adam with monasticism. This is something they invented to please Him. He does not condemn it but reminds us gently that this way of life is against human nature n we can serve and please Him better by being beneficial to His creation.
