Not all the work I do on the boat involves engines, most of the time I’m doing other things like cleaning, painting, plumbing, electrical, etc...
In this episode of Life as an Engineer I restore the ships barometer. A device used to detecting changes in weather.
This is the most editing I have done on a video since highschool. Hope you all enjoy!
Check out my channel for more! New video every week!

Beautiful job shipmate. Enjoyed the video Ethan. You have a lot of care in your work. That is good to see.

Ethan you can wax brass after polishing to keep it shiny longer, car wax works. Or even a spray satin clear coat, except the glass of course. The whole boat looks great!

I know this video is almost a year old but a can of NeverDull will make your life polishing brass and just about any other metal on a boat much easier. NeverDull is used by the US military all the time. If you can’t find it locally you can order it on Amazon. The Eagle One brand is less expensive than the Original NeverDull and I think works as well.

I'm still active! thanks for watching! It hadn't been done in years so it needed a little extra umph. I will check that out in the future to maintain it!

More boat life! What else is below deck? Any other maintenance work to do? What is the returning from a trip process like?

Shiny! How long before you have to do it again? Also, don't worry I use staples to fix my (work) pants.

Squeaker As long as I give it a buff every once in a while I won’t have to do it again! Whatever gets the fish on the boat! Haha

From engine mechanic to Hand Tool Rescue. Nice! Seriously, that's a nice looking piece of antique hardware. Any idea when it's from?

richkh I’m not sure. FV Silver Dolphin was built in 1965. I don’t think it’s that old but it could be!

Why not just use "Tarn X". Wouldn't that work better than grinding the corroded brass on the barometer?

George Travers I’ll give that a try next time! Neither the barometer nor the clock had been taken off the wall in years so there was some serious build up.

@@EthanLandshark US Navy uses Nevr-Dull for polishing brass. There are chemical solutions out there for removing heavier corrosion, but we just generally snagged a bottle of hot sauce from the mess decks. Wipe it on, let it sit for a while, then go after it with a wire brush. A brush with brass bristles is best, as it is soft enough to not scratch up the work as bad. Also handy in the engine room for cleaning those surfaces where you just can't have a scratch. Flare fittings in fuel lines come to mind. For a real nice set of tools and chemicals for cleaning hard-to-reach areas while working on equipment, drop by your local gun store and use your imagination in the "gun cleaning supplies" aisle. Full of stuff expressly designed to not mar machined surfaces.
