I followed a problematic Mormon housewife vlogger for several years. After making millions exploiting her children online, she started a life coaching cult with her son’s “therapist”. She even used some of the tactics this guy did, like having her family call out eachother’s flaws. If this poorly educated, not at all charming housewife can run a life coaching cult, anyone can. Thankfully, they are not particularly successful at recruitment, and even lost the 3 oldest members of her family. When the charming and intelligent criminals hear of the opportunities a life coaching scheme can provide, the world is in trouble.

@lloywilliams8149
@lloywilliams8149 Год назад
@@pyromaniac709 Ok, say you graduate from university at 22. You're ready to take on your first job, and you find yourself to have very marketable skills and loads of job opportunities. But then you fall in with a cult (or some charismatic person), and you are, say, 30 when you shake yourself loose. So here you are, trying to recover from the severe PTSD from being abused for years, trying to reestablish bonds with family and friends that may have not seen you for years, trying to rebuild trust with people who would have helped you back in the day. Not only do you have all that baggage to deal with that you did not have at 22, but you are now pretty old to be starting your career, trying to explain to potential employers why you have such a poor work history. I have several friends who left years-long relationships with narcissists, only then realizing that they worked for years in less than ideal jobs to support their partners instead of developing their own career paths. Because after the partner got their great degree/job, it was supposed to be "their turn" to pursue their dreams. The narcissistic partner drained my friends' savings while withholding their own money, treating themselves very nicely. Now my friends feel that years of their life, along with their money and best career possibilities, have been wasted. They are dealing with debt and dysfunction. That's not even the worst. It's terrible and sad. It's a waste of potential.

I believe narcissists are actually the most vulnerable to cults: they are seduced by the idea that finally a small community and its 'important' guru/leader figure sees views them with the same esteem with which they see themselves. Narcissists believe that their lack of achievements and interpersonal problems are due to being misunderstood or victimised; the cult affirms this and explains to them that only the cult is intelligent enough to see them as the elite person that they are.

Do you know who Larry reminds me of? Jim Jones! The way he gaslighted that kind of paranoia in his followers and moved them when he got paranoid about the government being on his tail. Only it was very fortunate that none of the poor college students got killed in the process. Psychopathy has been a special interest of mine since college (BA in Psychology) and I believe he’s much more psychopathic than narcissistic. Some psychopaths live very parasitic lives like that and tend to move through people just as quickly like that. I can’t believe that those clinicians claimed to have difficulty diagnosing him like that, either! Though some of them, unfortunately, are not immune to falling for that kind of charm. I, on the other hand, tend to think with my head way too much. One of my grandmothers was histrionic besides. So I tend to roll my eyes at that kind of charm. As for the dorm thing, my best guesses there is that he either charmed, threatened, or bribed them into letting him stay. Psychopaths are often very clever at creating shocking train wrecks when turning-or should I say foisting?-the mirror of the other person’s weakness back onto them. I know because one tried to do that to me years ago. They think that people are pieces of meat to be hunted, “eaten” and then dropped once they think that there’s nothing more of that person to “eat” on.

How does anyone have the intelligence to get into medical school, and at the same time fall for someone like this guy?!?!?! Anytime I see these stories about people in cults, I try to imagine myself in a simple conversation with one of these cult leaders! Lol I laugh at loud thinking how upset they would be to meet ME! I picture myself looking at them crazy or laughing at them with their attempts to talk me into something! There is no amount of "charm" Larry could use to get me to go along with this nonsense! To me, it baffles me. It doesn't make any sense at all. I say this as your everyday average type person. I view anyone in medical school as someone with high intelligence. As Dr. Grande states, that still is not enough to keep from being victim to this sort of thing. It truly leaves me stumped. I am definitely not the sharpest tool in the shed, but it would never work on me. Quite the argument for ignorance being bliss! Lol

It’s easy to think it won’t happen to you- most people do and aren’t stupid either despite common myths about those who fall into cults. I grew up in one and the majority were pretty educated people and fairly middle class… within a few months they’d sell their houses and give everything to the group. Love bombing is powerful. You never meet a “cult leader” or a “cult” - you meet interesting captivating people and don’t recognise how these nice folk are a cult until you’re far enough in. They always have a reason why they aren’t a cult in their explanations and it’ll sound plausible too. If you still wonder they’ll start joking about how if they’re a cult they’re a pretty good one to be part of. Aside from the odd leader, everyone will be incredibly genuine too… they have zero clue they’re recruiting for a cult. I was a pretty good little evangelist as a kid for the cult I was born into. I was proud of it. I didn’t even recognise it as a cult till several years out of it and it’s made the news in recent years not for anything good. There were always people calling us a cult - I just didn’t believe them.

We need to teach our children better. Especially our daughters. Our society would be 💯 better if we teach them to be more discerning with the men they allow in their lives. I put this mildly…. And frankly we need to do better with our sons. I’m sick of toxicity and red flags being ignored…and in the end these young women are left with the repercussions…one includes raising some deadbeat’s babies. Just a general observation in regards to young women and what they should be aware of. Sad stuff
@eadweard.
@eadweard. Год назад
Apart from being rather pompous, these are very confused remarks. This is like hearing about a neglectful parent staving their child and announcing, "We must do more to nourish our children!". Anyone likely to say such a thing, or to listen to it, already does so. And the sort of people liable to starve their child won't hear it or won't care.
@Notavailableatthistime
@Notavailableatthistime Год назад
@@eadweard. perhaps you are confused. Pompous was not my intention. It was simply an observation of seeing these young women in these vulnerable situations. And stating the fact we need to do better teaching our children. Now yes, this is woman-centric observation, but we need to teach our daughter to expect more and how to stand up for themselves and to prevent these type of people into their lives. We need to teach our sons to be better. Our young women are getting into these relationships and situations and are the ones who suffer the most. These poor young women were coerced into prostitution. My example was the fact that our young women are not taught to look out for themselves, (of which my example was that there is an epidemic of women having children with deadbeat fathers). Break the cycle people. Women in particular…teach your daughters to expect better. And yes, we need to teach our sons to be better.

Thank you for discussing this scourge upon college-aged youth. Cults tend to fly under the radar for many years before their destructive practices come to light. College students and recent graduates seem to get targeted by cultic recruiters more than other demographics. It’s odd how nothing proactive, legally or otherwise, can be done about them, accept for parents to warn their children about such groups, although this is not a guarantee to protect young people. In any case, the problem is huge and likely to get worse as post adolescents appear to be more and more disconnected from a loving, "normal" family structure as time goes on.
