There's so much misinformation in this video. The mother isn't the head of the family, we're just matrilineal, we take the name of our mothers. We're not matriarchal. And men are not financially dependent on their wives. Smh The English translation is nowhere near to what they're saying.
Exactly!! I'm very disappointed with this video👎👎 people will get the wrong picture of our culture. I got irritated by the translator. I just hope this is not a" DW documentary" RU-vid channel that I use to watch
@@Aditi-mb3qm matriarchy is just like patriarchy where all the power authority and privileges are given to women and men are victim of such society where matrilineal is just like patrilineal societies where the society is equal but only the name of the father is passed on to new generation instead of mother's name, opposite of this happen is matrilineal.
Love this video! It helped a lot with an assignment I have. Also, I noticed the brooms they use to sweep are similar to the ones we use in Ghana, and even though we now also have Western brooms with the long sticks that you can use while standing, I still prefer the ones that you have to bend over to use - using it every morning to sweep the house is like yoga and cleaning all in one haha! Plus it's faster and gets into corners and under furniture much better.
I come from a matrilineal culture as well on a small pacific island called Palau 🇵🇼 although male dominated in many aspects especially with the western influences it was and always has been a very matrilineal culture. So fascinated to learn of other matrilineal cultures thank you for sharing 😁👍
She said "the tough physical work is for a man to take care of ..." But the translator said "I sell tea n snacks.....i don't earn a lot etc ...." What a shame to tarnish the image of men..in this way...just because in khasi society women has freedom to fend for themselves n their family doesn't mean a man is "financially dependent" on his wife..if that is the case all men would hv been chased out of the women's house.. in fact khasi men has to deal with the pressure of having to work whatever be the case..so that his wife's clan will not look down on him...btw All this happens only in villages....in modern khasi society ... couples are given independence with no family interferance
@Natalie Harrison but a fact is a fact friend... I agree it may not be wrong ...but the fact is that men are not 'financially dependent' on women... many young men ...put off their marriage just because they are not financially secured to start a life with his wife .. to feed his family..if a women puts off her marriage for the same reason... its just because she chose to.. inorder to be financially independent n not because she has to feed her husband..
Traditionally Khasi women are the head of the family they inherit and protect ancestral property the mother can take matters into their own hands and make decisions if need be Regarding family matters with respect to her husband and maternal uncles. Yes present day khasi people have progressively changed with the coming of times and influence from the western culture to prefer a nuclear family but it is still tradition for the khadduh youngest daughter to protect care be responsible for the the family and her elders. To safeguard her ancestral home n property and to make sure the lineage survives. Women in our tribe have more freedom and privilege compared to the women in mainland India. We dnt practice arrange marriage and it is not really mandatory fr a women to get married n have children right away. She has the freedom to chose her own partner given the fact that one comes frm a decent background and are not related or frm the same clan. When you visit a market area You will also witness that it is the women who does most of the business. Khasi women are hardworking just as the khasi men. Both contribute together fr the welfare of the family. They are equally respected and cared for
Besides owning land and passing of names, many of the women's roles expressed in this video are the same as they were in America up until recently. This includes, cleaning, doing laundry and keeping a respectful home. How some people in the modern world look down on these things I'll never understand
Women are not the head of the family..they are simply the ones who runs the family in terms of keeping its integrity ,raising the child and also maintaining a home . Mens work hard and earn for their families and they are the ones who usually drive its sustainability.. poor interpretation by dw.. what makes us different is that we inherit our mother's surname.. and girls are usually the ones who inherit the ancestral properties.. and also boys leave their homes when they start a new family but if the girl is not the last sibling or if she is an elder and has younger siblings then the man and the wife usually move out of their homes to build new homes separately on their own..
A Mother is the head of the family but when it comes to taking decisions maternal uncles.are usually the one who take decisions. Fathers take care of the responsibilities of the family
🤣🤣🤣. But it was her expression of how happy she is because of having a girl like" A GIRL CHILD"!!!!! She was excited because she became Mother to a girl
The women in our society are not the head of the family, and she is not 'in charge' of the house and property. So many misconceptions here, it's more like we practice equality among the sexes. There is no gender discrimination and when it comes to managing the household or making decisions, both men and women have their equal say. It's just our way of honoring our women that we let our children take their surnames. And although now it has changed, it is notable to mention that although we've had this tradition for a very long time, the women were never allowed in political affairs until recent. :)
I think they are the head of the family & in-charge of houses & property as it is the youngest daughter [Khat-duh] who inherits it. That is why Uncle's [Mama] have a greater say in the future of his sister's children than the father. Political affairs in the olden times is also based on the basis of clans (kur) which is from the mother's side but yes parse they din't have any direct influence. That is why in traditional society if in case the mother dies the kids are to live with the grandparents & the father is to leave the house as he is not considered a member of the house or clan. The father is supposed to go back to his mothers house and look after his niece's & nephews. So to say there is no discrimination is wrong. Though what has changed now is that with the coming of Christianity in the region the concept of nuclear family has become more prominent & prevalent and so some tend to not follow the matrilineal rules to the core. So one can say that the society has somehow slowly evolved to the current place where both genders are treated much equally but with still a slight bias to the fairer sex. Anyways good work DW was quite surprised to see this.
@H1988for me polygamy sucks for men if you are not the top male. men in monogamous societies are happier because they all can get a wife and there is no oppression form the alpha male.
@Incorrect. Well, actually, it was said for EMPHASIS. Not redundant at all in that context. You can check this out easily on google sites concerning English grammar.
according to khasi society the father is the head of the family and only the children are getting their titles from their mothers. you have to know and learn first before you release a video like this
I am shocked to see the scripted documentary of your channel. If you come to our Land and taint our culture its no more than a scholarship or a money making research rather than facts. Sad to say that most Westerner's and their so call guide of our state don't know the concept of Inheritance in our Khasi Culture, the meaning of "Khun Khatduh" which you people just take it as the literal meaning of the last born daughter. Its a shame that you can just post and publish whatever you want. Kindly do your research and understand the Metaphor of our language first then only you'll understand our culture. Our's is a living culture, our religion is a practiced religion not a preaching religion. I don't want to sound rude but don't represent someone's identity if you don't understand it. Anyone can document but only some can live it.
You are complaining that the information isn't factual then not giving the correct information. If you want to educate, share the correct information, don't just complain.
The phrase " men are financially dependent on their wives" is not correct.. I'm a khasi n I can confirm this.. and not all men go to their wive's house..every one has a nuclear family.. except if the man marries the youngest daughter ,then he have to go and stay with the girl's family..and the Father is still the head of the family even though the family property is passed on to the women..above that the translation is so bad..
@@hackerbhau1709 Patriarchy is worse environment suffers , people suffer, higher numbers of crime, rape, discrimination and just every worse thing imaginable but Matriarchy is a more better place for everyone in Matriarchy all have rights but not in Patriarchy. Patriarchy is just the worst 👿👿
@@Aditi-mb3qm there are crime in matriarch too, in Meghalaya there are many rape case, murder etc... but people who involved in such thing are criminals .. wether patrilineal or matrilineal... we can't blame the whole society when there is a crime....
@@hackerbhau1709 One-third of the wives faces domestic abuse in the matriarchal tribes of Meghalaya. It is not a matriarchal utopia as the video shows.
A patrilineal society is one in which the lineage or ancestry of a society is traced through that of the father which most of India is but feminists demean India by labeling it as "patriarchy" to suit their narrative. India is a patrilineal society with a gynocentric mindset.
You are confusing it. See in Meghalaya or Matrinial societies in general women do laundry cleaning and cooking etc in their house and their name is passed down justly but here in Patriarchy women do all these works in man's house and not even their name is passed down which is wrong. Even in Meghalaya some men are Malists who want rights. So you really can't judge
All the "Khar" surnames in Khasi people have close DNA to Assam and Bengal because their first Mother of their Surnames was Dkhar people from neighbor states. And true fact about matrilineal Society is ,it Create a pool of Genes from nearby environment , Since man is Universally the Carrier of seeds. But Khasi Ladies takes responsibility in carrying surnames . So what happen is the True seed That men carry with them generation to generation changes its name every generation, as the new generation takes the last name from The mother side So the Seed type remain the same , but the name for the seed and fruit changes every generation. So , basically in Khasi Society , in example an Apple tree. this apple decided to grow in other Location . So the seed needed to be Planted in new fertile area example in Bhoi. So what happen is when the tree Grow and start bearing fruits. These Apple fruits name changes to Bhoi fruit. now when the next gen decided to grow in Mylliem by carrying the seed there . this Bhoi fruit becomes Mylliem fruit. and it goes on and on. This one apple Tree , will have thousands of name for it, which is way out from the system. It can create alot of defects when unknowingly two close related seeds mixed together. They usually become Short , have mental problems like Cystic fibrosis Tay Sach’s disease Autism Growth Hormone deficiency Albinism Sickle cell anaemia. But in Patrilineal society , takes surnames from father side. so in this society an apple seed sown anywhere in the world will always be an apple seed. they will never change name. So we can tell and trace their ancestors much better. because if a French man marries a Khasi lady the kids Dna is close to Father side ancestors as they are responsible carriers of Seeds. So the kids ancestors belongs in France. we cant call the Kids as khasi . Its like calling an Eagle a Pigeon , just because the eagle egg hatch in a Pigeon nest. An Eagle will always be an eagle, a Pigeon will always be a Pigeon. no matter what name you change it to. In Gods words He has given authority to man , to Protect and bears a special burden of responsibility and accountability for leadership and provision and protection in this relationship. (Ephesians @-24) 22 Wives, submit to your own husbands, as to the Lord. 23 For the husband is the head of the wife even as Christ is the head of the church, his body, and is himself its Savior. 24 Now as the church submits to Christ, so also wives should submit in everything to their husbands. And I think giving the family his name signifies that. Both man and woman are created in the image of God, but the man bears a special responsibility before God for this union. And that is signified with putting his name on the banner that flies over the family. That's why I think Matrilineal Society is wrong and against the Lord our God. They should Stand and change it for the Love of God.
wether patrilineal or matrilineal , a mixed marriage still ruined any race or ethnic group... i seen one white lady married an Indian man.... But her son is still white with golden hair and his features also looks european or Caucasian... Because of patrilineal he is considered as Indian because his father is an Indian but his features looks european Caucasian... So that's the affect of mixed marriage wether patrilineal or matrilineal....
God created both men and Women in his image and likeness so both are equal and God give women, females the right of life, the power to give birth God sends life my female so it is natural to be a Materniel and equal society
@@Aditi-mb3qm Nope God Made Women From one of Adam's Rib, God said, “It is not good for the man to be alone. I will make a helper suitable for him.” And the Man is Responsible to carry the seeds from one Generation to the another, He will Protect his Women , He is the Alpha , and women is the Helper. Taking a Man's Surname away from him is against God's will . Its not Natural to be Maternal, its just simply Stealing a Man Legacy. Dont Say one more Word, you are doing Everything opposite what God have Told.
I hate patriarchal doing the women as slave and more bullying in all around world. If Men want patriarchal, should leave women alone, practice to men only! Matriarchal on women, not use for men! That's all, separate!
@@spark300c No , in Matrinial society both males and females have rights and in those societies crimes are very very less inequality, domestic violence human trafficking etc. Are just non existent in these societies and people there are more happy than in the patriarchy soon women and people of this world will understand it they have already begun to understand and now patriarchy is ending.
