While shooting an episode on sponges, the Changing Seas team was given a tour of North Andros by local sponger Fritzgerald Taylor. Sponging is a tradition on the island, with three different commercially viable species collected on the Great Bahama Bank. The sponges are cleaned and dried before being sold to a wholesaler that ships them to markets all over the world.

My ancestors the Gullahs and the seminoles Indians after the Seminole war. Escaped to this locations in the Bahamas. Like 98% of African Americans are blood relatives to all Bahamians of indigenous heritage.

I'm consider myself African-American, but both my paternal grandparents are from the Bahamas. Grandma from Cat Island, grandpa from Red Bays, Andros Island. I've recently done a DNA test and I have no indigenous DNA. haha Guess I'm the 2%.

@@famliy60 They'd have to seeing as how my mother's side is 100% "FBA". That said, the blacks of the Bahamas are largely descended from the escaped slaves of the United States, so if there's any other group of black people outside the US who are close to black Americans, it'd definitely be the Bahamians.

@@tc2334 The Bahamas is a soup bowl of Natives and Americans. You ever looked up the Saltwater Railroad? 7000 Gullah Geechee was brought to the Bahamas. Denys Rolle brought 300+ slaves from Florida. 4000 Bermudians were brought over who were Native Americans. We are a stew.
