I am 80 years old now but I served with the 82d from March, 1963 to Aug, 1965. I was with the 1st 505 and deployed to the Dominican Republic in May, 1965. It was a great experience.

I was 82nd 1 /505 During 911 fresh out of high school ,in my mind I was already a legend and till this day I still have very high standards set for myself by my self. You can call it narcissistic or whatever but 82nd shaped me both mentally and physically .

Wow, sounds nothing like when I was there. We were on a 3 month rotation. 1 month in the field, 1 month on various stages of readiness to deploy on alert, 1 month post support, cleaning up, gaurding the ammo dump, stockade, working at the rigging shed, mororpool, etc. Daily duty roster, KP guard duty CQ etc. PT everyday plus the run. Plus misc training when time allowed.

I was 11H1P (Dco 4/325 air, then 3/325) and spent my 4.5 years at Bragg (1992-1996). When I got to Bragg 90% of my unit had CIBs and 40% had a combat jump (Panama).

I was CSC 3/325 from 80-83. AT Platoon. 4/325 came about when they reorganized the 509th in Italy. Then, they rotated 4/325 to Bragg and 3/325 to Italy. Many of my platoon mates were still in and made that trip. Then, another reorganization happened, and the 3/325 was stood down and the 173rd Brigade was reactivated. Who knows why, I was just an enlisted man!

My son just got finished OSUT and Airborne School and was assigned to the 82nd 3rd Brigade at Bragg this week. He’s been at in processing for over a week! The 3rd is in Poland and I’m concerned for the moment he’s not doing any training. My feeling is a well trained soldier is more effective and safer.

I really don’t know the current curriculum of the 82nd but I served at Bragg, I volunteered after my AIT to go Airborne and the tough physical and educational life you can get it was pretty awesome. It molded my tough standard of evaluating myself, it gave me purpose, I took advantage of every preparedness exercise, I learned focus on mission because from 1979 on I deployed constantly and took the time to actually learn how the world around me worked (Which many people actually don’t do) and how politicians work with their respected governments. In general it gave me the tools to be a good citizen, it molded me, I don’t know why people waste their time with things that are more about being part of a pack instead of learning from it. My Two Cents.

Let me simplify it. How to be in the 82nd as your first duty station for Airborne Infantry? Just have airborne in your contract when you enlist. That's it. It's an entire Airborne city. That's exactly where you're going. Want too go somewhere else? Reenlist. It's not that complicated.
@gbell8199
@gbell8199 4 года назад
So is there a chance on going to other airborne units
@jdkgcp
@jdkgcp 4 года назад
@@gbell8199 Sure... about as much as playing the lottery. Typically either you have to have a specific skill set, it's during combat or you get lucky. Examples.... I knew one guy who's first duty station was the airborne unit in Alaska. Super random lucky as I looked at thousands upon thousands of guys who were all 82nd. Another guy went in as an E4 and was sent to the 1/73rd in Vicenza.... because he was born in Vicenza and spoke fluent Italian and ended up being like the "post translator" for HQ or something after he broke both his legs on a jump. That's about it. The "during combat" part is because Italy or Alaska needed Privates. I was there when it was only like a thousand guys "ABCT". Everyone was a Specialist and had reenlisted to get there..... untill 9/11. But it's way bigger now so who knows.....but even now mathematically you're going to the 82nd. Go buy a random scratch off lottery ticket. Did you win? Probably not. But here's the flipside to odds. Command Sergeant Major of the Army Grinston was not the first soldier to be reassigned to the reactivated 2/503rd....it was me. About 2 months I sat there by myself as the only soldier until at the time 1SG Grinston came and joined me. Don't ask me why they sent him, an Artillery MOS to temporarily start up a brand new Infantry unit that was deactivated sometime after Viet Nam....but that's what happened. But then again don't ask me why they sent me....probably because I was an asshole. Guess that's why he's CSM of the Army now. They had got rid of 11 Hotels and turned us all 11 Bravo right after I got back from ILRRPS and I was all like "man screw that" so they promoted me and sent me to the 2/503rd....as an 11 Bravo. Helped start it back up and then once we had a full company went back to the line as an Alpha team leader. Good luck! I got out maybe 6-8 months before the documentary Restrepo. 1SG Caldwell was my Platoon SGT.

@@TheBenAllen. When I was 3rd BDE 1/508 in the 80's we lived in the barracks at the unit. I understand this may have changed, you live in an apartment. Thank you!
