I should have suggested to Mike when he was coming to NY that there's a decommissioned old air craft carrier parked in Manhattan called "The Intrepid" that was turned into a museum. It's small compared to modern day ones but still really cool. They keep some planes and helicopters on the deck. When I was there they had an SR-71.

Y'all asked how many: the US built 8 Wasp-class ships, 1 has retired, the successor (sort of) is the America Class, which will be 11 ships (2 have been completed). But there are larger amphibious ships (amphibious command ships - we have two: The USS Blue Ridge and the USS Mount Whitney). We also have 12 San Antonio Class amphibious transport docks - smaller than the Wasp you viewed - carries about 700 Marines each and a crew of about 360.

You can absolutely tour U.S. military ships. There's different ones around the country from Virginia to San Diego. I think the most cost is about $25. You can tour the deck on your own, then take a guided tour below deck. You'll have to Google it to see which one you're interested in. Some need a 3 week notice, no weekends, etc.
@jeffburnham6611
@jeffburnham6611 Год назад
Depending on the base, they often will have at least one ship that is their "tour" ship for the weekend, and it doesn't cost anything. I don't know of any ship that has open tours for civilians. You can't just walk on to the quarterdeck or afterbrow and tell them you want to tour the ship.

The US Marines are a Department of the US Navy. The US Marines' (November 10) birthday is 3 days shy of 1 month after the US Navy's (October 13th) birthday (same year). Amphibious Assault Ships are like smaller US Aircraft Carrier that have US Marines on them. Amphibious assault ships are where US Marines fighter planes take off from when at sea.

Hey guys, I love your videos. I toured an amphibious assault ship many years ago when it had stopped in Boston and they are pretty impressive when seen up close. What was most impressive was the huge area where they store the amphibious assault vehicles that can be launched from the huge opening rear door. Even though they are large, they’re not as huge as America’s current supercarriers. There are currently 7 Wasp class amphibious assault ships, which are 843’ long and about 40,000 tons, and 2 of the newer America class (with a 3’rd nearing completion), which are 855’ long and about 44,000 tons. America currently has 11 active aircraft carriers which are just shy of 1200’ in length and are ~100,000 tons (9 of the older Nimitz class, 2 of the new Ford class and there’s another Ford class, the USS John F Kennedy, scheduled to be commissioned in 2024). The assault ships are all conventionally powered while the aircraft carriers are all nuclear powered. While they may look similar, assault ships and aircraft carriers have entirely different purposes. The mission of an assault ship is to quickly deliver troops and equipment/vehicles to an area of conflict while the mission of an aircraft carrier is to deliver air superiority to anywhere in the world (and also to project the message not to F**k with the U.S.! 😂)

You guys asked how many of these ships the US has? Well, the WASP Class (1989 to 2021) was based on the TARAWA Class (1971 to 1980) that preceded it. The Tarawa Class had a total of 5 ships in its Class before being canceled and decommissioned by 2015 to be replaced by the AMERICA Class (2014 onwards) which currently has 2 ships with more being built. But back to the WASP Class, a total of 8 were built, but one caught fire in port a few years ago, and had to be scrapped. So we're down to 7 WASP Class vessels. For further reading on each of these Class of ships, here are the Wikipedia entries for each. en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/America-class_amphibious_assault_ship en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tarawa-class_amphibious_assault_ship en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wasp-class_amphibious_assault_ship

By using their equipment in actual combat, they are learning if they got their money's worth. Thus providing something for arms manufacturers to learn from. About Russia asking prisoners to go to the frontline for 6mos, the large majority of them are declining - which goes to show you the morale and the speculation on their livelihood if they were to be stuck out there.

There are several cruise ships bigger than the Nimitz Class Carriers. The carriers can't be any larger because they have to fit through the Panama Canal.
@MotoroidARFC
@MotoroidARFC Год назад
Nimitz carriers don't fit in the canal. They have to go around South America assuming their operations don't make them go the other way around the whole planet. When they pass Argentina they usually have an exercise where Argentine carrier planes practice touch and go landings on the flight deck.

We call these LHD's but in reality they are Medium CV's. Highly capable Platforms not unlike their big Brothers the Super Carriers. However the primary purpose is too project 2k Marines aboard too any area of the World with Air and Supply Logistics. Impressive is an understatement.

USS BONHOMME RICHARD (LHD 6) was my first ship. Sadly, an arsonist destroyed her two years ago. I have many memories of that deployment to include providing tsunami relief to Indonesia and a wonderful port visit to Australia. Funny about the 12 hour work day comment. As a department head, my Commodore once told us that if we were not out of our racks before reveille (0600) and not up until after taps (2200), we were not meeting his expectations. All of us were already far exceeding that expectation.

The amazing thing is you think that super carriers are massive, until you compare them to both the largest cruise ships and cargo ships. Don't get me wrong, super carriers are amazing and are enormous, but when you do a size comparison to something like Royal Caribbean's Allure of the Sea or the Seawise Giant, these amphibious ships are to super carriers as super carriers are to those larger ships. It's mind blowing.

When you guys were talking about the F-35, we do sell those outside the US but of course not to anyone lol. What’s interesting though, is the F-22 is NOT sold outside the US due to the level of technology on board that we need to control. I believe you guys (Brits) and maybe a couple other of our absolute closest allies are able to buy them but I could be wrong. Pretty cool though! I’m proud to be on this side of the table and not the receiving end of all our armament lol
