In Episode 6 of Last Chance High, Cortez makes an emotional trip to the prison where his father is serving a life sentence for murder. Deeply affected by the visit, Cortez begins taking his medicine regularly, and soon shocks his teachers with a new sense of self-control and openness.
On Chicago's West Side, there is a school for the city's most at-risk youth - the Moses Montefiore Academy. Most of the students at Montefiore have been kicked out of other schools for aggressive behavior, and many have been diagnosed with emotional disorders.
Last Chance High takes viewers inside Montefiore's classrooms, and into the homes of students who are one mistake away from being locked up or committed to a mental hospital.
Look out for new episodes of Last Chance High every Thursday.

WATCH NEXT: Death penalty sentences may be on the decline, but many will spend their final days behind bars with another sentence - life without parole. I feel like Cortez is angry about so much more than his dad and he doesn’t even realize it, neither do the adults around him. Like his little sister passing away such a brutal way, his brother also passing a very brutal way, and his dad in the situation he’s in. Life has been so unfair to Cortez.

I feel this video showed the real Cortez. He is just a scared kid. Yea, he talks the talk and get into fights, but it's because he is afraid and insecure. I come back to this every few years. The first time watching, I couldn't understand it besides "kid bad and may end up like his father", but as I mature, I feel sympathy for both Cortez and his father. People can be reformed. It's complex and some blame should be put on both, but I feel it's morally incorrect to judge people for their past actions. It's environment.

@jasonrankin9515
@jasonrankin9515 8 лет назад
I don't think he's a bad kid either, typically when kids like him lash out they're just looking for attention. It's all about establishing that dominance in the pecking order. Usually a child's parent is at the top of theirs. Some kids could care less if they go to the principle, or cops but the minute you say I'm gonna call your parents, they usually chill their ass out and that's ONLY when the parent is at the top of their pecking order. However, if they have no dominate figure then they lash out.

Generally, white men do not have such disadvantages in life as I am sure you do not have such disadvantages in life. You have no reason to be offended, why does it bother you if a random stranger on the internet doesn’t pray for you? She is a black woman and is more likely to feel empathy for these poor young black men who are so disadvantaged. Just because she said she’s praying for them doesn’t mean she automatically doesn’t care about any other race. Grow up and stop being a cry baby.

Precious Lopez what I meant was emotionally disconnected. It could be the editing of the video, not knowing how long it took him to compose himself, but also the way they greeted each other, a quick little "street greet" or whatever... Serial killers: No, since they obviously have a mental illness which prison will not help, they should be in a maximum security mental institution to try and find a cure. Repeated sex offenders: Repeaters, no, but sex offence is a wide gambit of crimes, which range from a mistake someone made when they were in their 20s with a 17 year old to a child molester. It is hardly a blanket crime. Terrorists: Again, tricky, since terrorism is a very wide range of possible crimes. Someone who commits genocide obviously deserves the highest possible punishment, which would be death. Terrorists typically have a political agenda and believe they are waging a war against their oppressors. Whether they are right or not, war is always ugly. I never said prison was useless. I just said that they system is broken if a system meant to help society destroys families and creates a terrible circle of crime.

The talk he had with his dad made me shed a tear. I remember when I went to go see my dad when he was in prison. I had went to see him with my sister and his mom and dad for one of those visits where you get to eat and talk with the face to face. Family day event it was. I cried when it was time to leave. Seeing the walls close every foot step you take to get in and out is a crazy and unreal feeling even though it's all real. I remember me and my dad would write letters to one another, he'd always say that when he was gonna get out that he was gonna be there for me and my sister and my mom. But he never kept his word. It's sad that I don't know him like that, and when we run into each other it's always awkward. I seen him yesterday walking home and he gave me a hug and kiss, we chatted for like 5 minutes, and I went on my way. But what's sad is he told that same lie he always tells when he sees me or my sister, he always says "I'll be around the house Saturday, tell your mom I'm coming to see her." He said that yesterday and I shrugged my shoulders with a smirk. But I thank God that I had a mom who raised me right. Never been to jail, never been in any type of fights, never was one to run with the crowd. I've always stayed to myself even now as a 24 year old. All I needed was my mom, and she did the best she could, and I turned out great. I am forever thankful for her.

This was extremely sad! My heart goes out to young men like Cortez. It's so unfortunate, because he didn't ask to be born into a dysfunctional situation. I pray that he makes a turn around!

This is incredibly sad, yo. However I LOVE the optimism in Mrs. Aguirre's voice. You can tell she has a way to have people open up to her. That's who we need more of in our school systems, but also in our parents. It all starts at home.

im happy for him. he gets to see his dad after a long time. my dad left me when i was 7 and i havent had contact with him since. good on the father for caring so much update: i drove 15 hours to my dads old house not knowing if he was there or not and he cried since i found him

This was extremely sad and hard to watch, with him and his father talking. They're so disconnected the first few minutes with them only with each other was complete silence. From watching the father and the way he talks seems like it doesn't matter that he is not in his childs life. This young man needs a father figure but his dad isn't one. And why was he laughing about having murder and attempted murder charges, I hope Cortez doesn't follow in his dad footsteps.
@TwoFiveSoulja
@TwoFiveSoulja 10 лет назад
It's not that he doesnt care hes not in his child's life...he just doesnt know how to show it very well. if he didnt care..he wouldnt have cried. the whole time i was watching it..i could clearly tell neither of them are good with expressing their emotions..they did the best they could. And he laughed cuz it probably caught him completely off guard or he was hoping that that question wouldn't come up that day..so when cortez did ask it, he was probably thinking "damn i was hoping he wouldnt ask that"
@SuperJBrowne
@SuperJBrowne 10 лет назад
I think his dad cares it's just that when you're locked up it makes you hard, any sign of emotion is perceived as weakness by other inmates. It would be a bit difficult to change that mind-set within one meeting with a son he hasn't seen nor heard from in 8 years.

I think his Dad was trying to connect but Cortez is so nervous and knocked out on those meds that it made him slow to speak - I think they need to lower his dosage.
@UndeadBed

BayAreaTre Exactly what I was thinking. What are you supposed to say when you see your son for the first time in 8 years, especially under these circumstances? I know if I was in the father's place I would feel ashamed and full of guilt, knowing that I (1) killed a man and (2) have to somehow face my son after my poor decisions. And I agree about the laughing, it's a very common nervous reaction, it doesn't mean he necessarily found the act of attempted murder to be hilarious. I fell out of my kayak one time far out from shore, and I laughed to tears, but I can assure you I was scared shitless. I digress.

The two parents at least need to be civil though. Growing up terrified of one parent due to abuse can wreck a child too. Many men and a lot of women are still children emotionally. If they can't talk about what they feel, they take it out with anger.

I actually feel really bad for Cortez. It seems like he's a decent kid he's just in a shitty environment. Poor kid. And living where he does doesn't help....it's a vicious cycle that unfortunately he'll probably never get out of.
@USSLIBERTYREMEMBERER
@USSLIBERTYREMEMBERER 10 лет назад
Cortez is far from a "Decent kid". In the first episode he explicitly says "I always try to hurt 'em real bad or make 'em not breathe or somethin'", and is shown starting countless fights. That's no decent child.
@UndeadBed

YEAH, "I feel really bad," "poor kid," your sympathy just bursts with sincerity! As you said it's a vicious cycle, luckily VICE and countless others will always be their to film it for your entertainment.

The Ocelot It's not that he's a "decent kid." It's more like he has the potential to be a decent kid. I mean, two of his siblings got killed in gang fights and his dad is incarcerated. It doesn't justify his action but it just goes to show that he isn't doing this shit for nothing.
