In Episode 5 of Last Chance High, Crystal is picked up for shoplifting after disappearing for almost a week - and has left her mother on the verge of a nervous breakdown. Meanwhile, Cortez prepares to head downstate to visit his father, who is serving a life sentence in prison for murder.
On Chicago's West Side, there is a school for the city's most at-risk youth - the Moses Montefiore Academy. Most of the students at Montefiore have been kicked out of other schools for aggressive behavior, and many have been diagnosed with emotional disorders.
Last Chance High takes viewers inside Montefiore's classrooms, and into the homes of students who are one mistake away from being locked up or committed to a mental hospital.

And I also believe it’s mainly due to, not knowing what to say or have a conversation with his father because there’s no relationship. And so, maybe writing the questions down for Cortez will make it feel less awkward for him if it goes silent. Then too, there are just things that he should know in case he grows older and ever faces resentment due to his fathers absent, at least he’ll have some of the answers to his questions once he begins to fully process and see the impact

My mother is single parent of 2 children, one of which is autistic and I grew up with an education and with a stable house hold. Ppl blame growing up with a single parent on everything. If the mother worked hard enough to discipline her children and have stability in their life, also growing there kid in a good environment then they would be fine. Growing up without a father will impact the child but they could still be a good person with just a mother. But I will admit having a absent father can take a toll on a child. Based on the situation. I’m extremely lucky to have such great role models in my life. There’s nothing better than having a committed support system that is and has always been there for you. I have no idea what it’s like to have daddy issues but I think the worst part of it all is when I see women that had absent fathers continuing the cycle with their kids because they don’t know how to pick a good partner/father to their kids. I used to feel bad for women like this but at this point I just find it unfortunate that they weren’t able to put the effort into getting therapy to figure out how they could select the best person to father their child

@SDALLE99

Crystal’s mother is just full of it. First she blamed the school for unable to control her daughter. Then she blamed the neighborhood for having gangs and her daughter’s friends for being a bad influence. Then she blames the absent father. And she even blamed crystal for ruining her younger child. At no point does she takes any personal responsibility and admits that she failed as a parent. If she’s so afraid of her younger daughter catching that bad behavior, then what the hell is she there for?! No wonder her daughters are in trouble.
@JCupgrade
@JCupgrade 3 года назад
Crystal has no respect for her and for good reason I lot of the comments mention the quote from her mom when she says Crystal gets what ever she wants but what I think she really wants is to get away from her mother who cares more about what people think about how she raises her children then how she actually raises her children
@dragonogre4349
@dragonogre4349 3 года назад
to be real yeah she isn't a good mother, but that's the thing that happens with children that don't have a father, they fall out of line. they have no role model to look up to. you cant dump all the blame on the mother, and the gangs are something to blame too for they influence her daughter. its hard to control a child when they're not with you especially ones growing up in dangerous communities.
@AhmedMahmoud-fb1ug
@AhmedMahmoud-fb1ug 3 года назад
How do you make this conclusion? All we've seen is whats on camera, we have no idea what their relationship is like at home. We don't know how Crystal was raised or how her mother treated her, it could very well be that Crystal is at fault. I don't know how people can just come to conclusions about a whole person's life just by a few clips of a single day in their life. Remember, these are real people, and you're no psychologist to assume the worst about someone when it very well could be that there's nothing else her mom could do.
@SoggyHotDoggy
@SoggyHotDoggy 3 года назад
It’s easy to come to this conclusion when you see 11 minutes out of a person’s entire life, but the fact of the matter is that single parenthood is waaaaay harder than you’re making it sound right now. You have a teenager in a bad neighborhood and you’re the only parent with no one to back you up? We have approximately 0 idea what all she’s done or been through outside of this, so to me, coming to the conclusion that she just isn’t doing her job seems like a stretch.

Kids like this are being reconstructed for failure
@meganp8766
@meganp8766 4 года назад
John Williams that’s what people do in America. They look to medicine as the solution. They give everyone antidepressants. They once tried to do that to one of my friends, called her dad in to say that they think she has ADHD. I think it’s also about money. Some of these drug manufacturers are monopolies. A lot of the time it’s the medicine that cause more issues like “suicidal thoughts”. So many teens know the names of antidepressants because they get put on them. You don’t know many times I’ve heard people talk their antidepressants **adderall to be specific** and how they mess them up and make them slow. People really think medicine/antidepressants is the answer when in reality it’s a heart issue. These kids have been through a lot and they have so many emotional scars. A bottle of pills/counseling can only do so much. They need to know that someone ACTUALLY cares and isn’t making money off of their illness.

well we see his mther and we dont see alot of her i suppose because he has a better relationship with his mother and the real issue he has is with his father, the only father figure he has commit a horrible crime and choose violence over a life with his son which definitely plays on his mind greatly. Crystal has a mother trying but ultimately failing to connect with her daughter whther that be through a fault of her own or also the fault or crystal being able to understand this attempt and reciprecate. We feel sympahy of cortex because he doesnt abuse his relationship with his only parental figure which can assume is generally normal considering it wasnt analysed or shown in this video but crystal doesn, crystal takes out all her spite on her mum causing her great duress while being unsympathetic towards her situation, while cortex takes out his spite on himself something that most people can relate, while creating a strong exterior to almost prove to himself and others he isnt weak over what he sees as a lost opporunity to have a father, you cant miss what you dont have but he knows he could have had a father.

My father died when I was 9, our family was already dysfunctional and I felt like my dad was the only one of a family of 7 kids, all half siblings that actually liked me so when he died there was no grieving and I felt alone and hopeless. I remember I was on a swing and I realized I'm not a kid anymore. That set the stage for a lot of unknowingly bad decisions. I'm in my 50s now, single and just finding myself. Thank the Universe I survived and have beautiful kids and grandkids but it's no joke.

I was a substitute teacher in Chicago public school for five years and all I got was an ulcer and a hate for this city. When I would discipline the kids or call home on them the parents wanted to physically fight me. The parents were worse than the kids most times. Every school I went to was full of Cortez's and Crystals and no books, over crowded classrooms, no art or music classes. They hoarded the kids from class to class without ever giving them the tools they needed to succeed. Even the teachers who were great teachers struggled to teach with NOTHING! They pass the kids even if they weren't ready, due to the no child left behind policy. The CPS system was and remains a nightmare. Most of these kids could barely put a sentence together but they all had on Jordan's and $200 jeans. Smh

So basically her excuse for her behavior is because her father left? I never knew my father. He left my mom when he found out she was pregnant. He never payed any child support. My mom struggled for years, yet still provided with things I needed, even wanted. She goes through the worst just to keep me safe and provide me with the best. There would be nights where she wouldn't eat, just so that I could. I would never disrespect my mother. If anything, I owe her. This girl really needs to be ashamed of herself.

@John Kimber Of course you have more negative experiences than positive ones. People don't walk into the courtroom to say make a case about how few problems they're having as a pair. People go there when there's an issue that needs to be legally sorted out. I do, however, agree that men and women need to be treated equally in the courtroom, and that women have an unfair advantage in some instances.I just don't think the solution to preventing a bias in favor of women is to recreated that same bias, but in disfavor of them. Men and women need to just be viewed as people.

I’m 23 years old, the first time I saw my dad was when I was 19. As I’m writing this ,I have never gotten into any trouble with the law. And it’s not because my dad taught me from right to wrong, I just used my Common Sense. It’s easy to blame daddy or point fingers when you’re serving time or do stupid shit. Lastly, why does the mother have to suffer? She’s been supporting her through thick and thin, and all the daughter does is blatantly disrespect her mother by leaving her, while mom is forced to look for her all night. Why can’t she understand the fact that the ones who are supporting her are suffering BECAUSE of her. Nothing personal, I have no remorse for people who treat their mothers that way, especially children of single mothers like me.

You know, my father never really partook in my life when I was younger, but I didn't act like a damn fool. I loved my mother too much to be disrespectful and disappoint her. My only goal was to love her, make her proud, and always support her. These kids just need a little love and a good asskicking or two. They need to be exposed to more constructive, positive aspects of life rather than the negative influences in their neighborhoods.

It's not whether you have a father or not, it's what society you live in. Of-course you're gonna be the nice guy that comes from the nice neigbourhood, but when you're from the 'ghetto' It's not as nice as you expect it is.

That's true, Mikolai Grimsson. I was raised in the heart of Atlanta, Georgia: Bankhead, Carver Homes, and Summer Hill. Those areas were very, very tough back when I was living there. At the age of 10, I would literally go outside and find someone smoking crack or selling dope every morning. The break-ins, the shootings; it was just a war zone. 12 years old and fed up, I was determined and hopeful that me and my mother were going to escape that horrible place at once. While my mother worked full-time as a housekeeper, I discreetly started selling baked goods and junk food to the hood to help raise money for us to find a new house. We managed to save up some cash for 8 months and moved to Lithonia, Georgia; which wasn't a bad area, yet it was a little run down by ghetto kids. All I'm saying is is that everyone has a choice. Luckily, I was just a kid who had an inner strength and motivation to persevere. I was just a natural born leader who never allowed myself to be influenced by the negativity in my neighborhood, with the help of my mother. Young people just need the proper guidance and...discipline.

You didn't grow up without a father and are now sucessful? Good for you. Unfortunately, the statics show that kids who's father or mother goes to jail, are at high risk for going to jail themselves. There are some who are able to break that statistic, but most can't. They are stuck. Don't judge them because you are sucessful. Show some compassion and pity for them. Having a father uninvolved or absent is MUCH different than having a father in jail for MURDER.

Megan Parham Yea, it's much worse. The difference is one actually has the freedom to be involved with his kids while the other doesn't.. When kids get old enough to understand it HURTS so much more knowing that your father refused to be involved rather than knowing he couldn't because of his circumstance..
