Life Of Riley - Riley's Firstborn starring Jackie Gleason ( Part 2 )
The Life of Riley, with William Bendix in the title role, is a popular American radio situation comedy series of the 1940s that was adapted into a 1949 feature film, a long-run 1950s television series (originally with Jackie Gleason as Reilly) and a 1958 Dell comic book.
The show began as a proposed Groucho Marx radio series, The Flotsam Family, but the sponsor balked at what would have been essentially a straight head-of-household role for the comedian. Then producer Irving Brecher saw Bendix as taxicab company owner Tim McGuerin in Hal Roach's The McGuerins from Brooklyn (1942). The Flotsam Family was reworked with Bendix cast as blundering Chester A. Riley, a wing riveter at the fictional Cunningham Aircraft plant in California. His frequent exclamation of indignation became one of the most famous catch phrases of the 1940s: "What a revoltin' development this is!" The radio series benefited from the immense popularity of a supporting character, Digby "Digger" O'Dell (John Brown), "the friendly undertaker."

The animation credit at the end also applied to the Pabst commercials seen during the program [although Harry Von Zell usually delivered a middle commercial around this time], courtesy of Sid Glenar's small animation studio. He created Pabst's first filmed commercials for "RILEY" (and their later "BLUE RIBBON BOUTS" series on CBS), as well as other early animated ads....

That's usually what Von Zell said when the closing credits faded, 'Hold', as the "Blue Ribbon" remained on sceen, with the "Pabst Blue Ribbon/ Finest Beer Served- Anywhere" logo superimposed in front of it. I know several original 16mm prints with commercials are floating around in collectors' circles....

"Enjoy 'THE LIFE OF RILEY' on both radio and television over NBC. Be sure to check your local newspaper for the time and station in your area. This is Harry Von Zell, speaking".

By todays American standards I guess I would be consider walking the line between young/middle aged (i'm 44) either way this show has been off the air more yrs then I've been a live so it was a nice victory when while at a town fair the question was asked who played life of riley first...this much older then me gentleman(about 65/70) said William Bendix he practically swore to it but I knew the correct answer was Jackie Glesson which of course won me the prize the older man was impressed

We grew up using Supper as our evening meal. Personally, I think Supper is more distinctive than dinner. But, other people use Dinner though. . Lloyd.

@pmb003 Excuse the delay. I am MUCH better now. Expect minor hip surgury in the spring as my bone density is improved quite a lot. Lloyd
