I love how Heather McNamara is being almost exploited for her pain, Veronica trying to reach out, and Mrs. Fleming is holding her back. It really shows that the adults have no idea of how much she was suffering, and how JD looked like he wanted to hurt Duke. It made it seem like he really did want to rid the world of cruel people like her.
The Awesome Mibby Well it's both a literal and symbolic reason. It's literal that Mrs. Flemming is holding her back because they started this event to share feelings and she holds Veronica back so Heather McNamara can have the spotlight. It's symbolic in the manner that the adults don't really know what's going on in their minds and aren't willing to understand, but will bar others from helping the situation, even though Veronica knows pretty much the situation.
I'm glad you noticed and picked up on that part :) I always find that in high school - and in this song - people and adults seem to take children's emotions lightly and don't realize the implications of their words. Like the whole "if I wear the wrong outfit" seems petty or unimportant, but it was important to Heather.
MissyAsylum I have to agree on that. I tend to have very logical reasoning and I've even written incredibly good essays and messages, yet most don't seem to think that it comes from a teenager because "they're young and all children tend to be the same". It's quite funny that most of the things we can say completely absent-mindedly can mean the world for someone else (for example, in Heathers, where J.D. fell in love with and became incredibly attached to Veronica because she reached out to him, even though he constantly moves and has trust issues).
I like that little detail towards the beginning, where JD moves towards McNamara along with Veronica. While it's up to interpretation, I feel like it shows that JD still has compassion, and hasn't yet fallen so far that he's willing to see her commit suicide.
I kind of doubt he considered McNamara a decent person, mostly because he didn’t know why Veronica wanted to stop her from killing herself and even said “One more dead Heather’s a good thing”. Duke was just a higher-priority target for him. In my headcanon he was basically thinking “what about all the people DROWNING in the ocean, how do you think they feel!?” throughout most of Lifeboat. But her story still stuck with him because up until then he’d never considered that the kids at the top of the high school social hierarchy could be just as much victims of it as the ones on the bottom. He just concluded that the only solution was to destroy the system instead of trying to create a better one.
I love how you made ms Fleming hold everyone back when H. McNamara holds the pill bottle. It really shows how she was patronizing the concept of suicide
If you pause it just in time you can see Mrs. Fleming smiling as she's (Heather) telling how she feels and Veroinca just looks terrified. Amazing detail and work, I'm telling you.

I don't understand why people complain about her weight. In all honestly, her looking chubby adds depth to song. It gives you the impression that the only thing she feels she has going for her is her charm and if people ever start disagreeing with what she says or hates what she wears, it won't be hard for them to abandon their "friend" just to protect their social life.

I think the reason most people have a problem with it is the fact that she's the captain of the cheer squad, which would imply she's more in shape. Outside of that, it's a great design choice
Anyone remember what Mcnamara said in Candy Store? "That freak's not your friend, I can tell in the end, if she had your shot, she would leave you to rot." And in Lifeboat, that's exactly what she's afraid of: everyone disliking her and leaving her to rot because she lost her social status and didn't meet their expectations, and being viewed as worthless. Heather always knew... and was always afraid. And this was her breaking point.
I love how you included the fact that everything she said was being recorded. Other than you I've never seen someone add the cameras and it really completes the whole feel of the song :3
yas! and how the teacher held Veronica back with that crazy look on her face, it really shows how much she doesn't care about the children, BUT about the way ppl are going to talking about her. Like , if she acts like she would help that "poor soul" (how she would say) , then everyone would love her (but she literally just showed how much she really cared). So in my opinion you are totally right and this animatic is one of my fave :D
Dude. DUDE. This is the most creative Lifeboat animatic I've ever seen. Like, holy heck, this is absolutely stunning, and manages to portray all the emotion I always got from this song! A++++!!
what i also really like is how the animatic shows the characters as they really are - little more than children. In clips i’ve seen of the musical they’re played by adults, which changes the perception somewhat. but when i saw this animatic i was reminded of how much peer pressure and status and such affected me when i was in high school myself
I think this is my favorite animatic for Life Boat I've seen. I love the detail of Ms. Fleming actively stopping Veronica from comforting her, just because she wants to get a good shot.
Is NOBODY going to talk about how AMAZINGLY you showed just how much Ms. Fleming let the attention get to her and try to use Heather M for success at 0:18?! LIKE JESUS MAN.
So do I. It makes sense because she has an eating disorder. I know eating disorders can go both ways but I feel like this feels better for some reason even though she makes fun of Martha for being overweight too.

At 0:18 Veronica wants to help Heather yet Mrs. Fleming is restricting her from doing so and SMILING. She felt happiness in the fact that a student was suffering and wanted to end her life. Sick yet sadly accurate to the fact that adults want to show other children what depression and loneliness can do to people through demonstration than help those who are already hurting. If anything it may scare other students not to speak up in fear of being called out in front of the people they don't want to be looked at at such a weak state.
I get why. Flemming thought that this would be good and that no one would jump McNamara. unfortunately she's too blinded by ideals to see the warning signs

This is amazing!! Most Lifeboat animatics i've seen stay strictly in the lifeboat setting, which often leads to very little action (which still works because the beginning of the song is very stagnate), but this is something else! I love the back and forth between the symbolism and the reality and how it creates a really intense atmosphere. Your interpretation and presentation for songs never cease to amaze me, and always bring amazing new ideas. I love your art
While I love your art style and designs, what has REALLY always got me about your animatics, and what sets you apart from all of the other Heathers animatic creators is your creative vision. Your Candy Store animatic is what got me hooked, and then every single one of your other videos I've watched have given me that same feeling of "holy shit, this is on a whole 'nother level from the other people who do these." Your mind must be an absolute goldmine of ideas and original concepts, you honestly would succeed in literally any creative field you entered, not just drawing and animation. And also I don't even think McNamara looks fat in this. She just t h i c c in all the right places and that's A ok with me.

My first time watching I didn't realize that JD was there with Veronica. Also, this is a really god animatic, I've never seen one where they cut back to real life
I always like how you do things in your animatics, and I really feel like this show cases the things you do that add to the effective of your work, most importantly your little details 1. Giving characters personality- you add little motions and movements that really give a read of who and what the characters are and how they feel. From Veronica trying to help but being held back because the good publicity this would give, to Heather Duke rolling her eyes, to the red heather pushing her even as she leaves "willingly" it adds to the cruelness of the world 2. A solid setting- you put them in an environment! And make them interact with it! She's on Camera in front of all her peers, she flashes to the bathroom, she reacts and touches the smoke water in the lifeboat. It grounds them and gives them weight and importance in the setting Color and effects- the smoke and muck of the water and use of red (along with being a thing in the rest of the animatics) really symbolizes strongly death, solitude and danger. It helps convey the emotions really well! And that was my, I guess, analysis of why and how you do things so right in your animatics? That got long, hope you don't mind!

Being a larger girl myself, I absolutely adore a lot of your animatics. You show a lot of body diversity and I can't help but adore it. This one, it's absolutely amazing. The way you designed it was absolutely beautiful.
This is the best animation. If anyone feels like there alone, your not. When your different, it makes you better than anyone else! You have to love you. You don't have to be popular! You just need to be you. When the people you know cast you aside, it means they aren't your friends. Don't feel alone. Love yourself, and you can love anything and anyone!

You did such an amazing job with this. All of the effort you placed into it, is something that can be seen immediately upon the transitions between the song visuals and the actual scenes occurring. This'll definitely be something I watch over and over.
I know this Is 4 years old,,, but I wanna acknowlage the fact the teacher is smiling at 0:17 as she watches yellow heather slowly break down. A ton of people probably acknowlaged this but I love the little addition of the teacher enjoying this and getting content out of it 😭 especially since veronica mentions the teacher partonizing them like rabbits right after this
This animatic is visually breathtaking-very different feel than the other renditions of Lifeboat out there. You really captured the pressure Mac faves with all the symbolism and shadows and Chandler's ghosts and it's too much for words!!!! You captured Chandler's true self and the little details you included like Ms. Fleming holding Veronica back and the record button being shown before Heather M. starts singing show how corrupt and misguided the school and Ms. Fleming are-just like Veronica later says. Showing her being pulled under and accepting it is a perfect lead into Shine a Light Reprise as well. This just flows so fluidly as an animatic and as a way to truly tell the musical's (and Heather M's) story. Her emotions and the severity I feel like I repeat myself praising your animatics all the time but it's because I can't even begin to comprehend how ingenious your work is!!! You never fail to capture and build upon the essence of the song you're working with and it astounds me every time. Your interpretation and incorporation of symbolism is amazing!! Best animatic creator on RU-vid hands down. Edit: The emphasis on the red scrunchie, the transformation of the water to the bottle, and the transitions from the sea to the school are so fluid and perfect I can't even. Your color choices are so fitting for every song too, there's too much to praise here!!!!!

Something that I think is interesting is how Heather Duke has an ‘X’ over her mouth. It’s like she knows all about Heather McNamara’s pain and struggles, but she doesn’t, or even can’t, say anything. Which is also interesting coupled with her problems with bulimia. This was incredible.
After reading your little essay in the description, I honestly love the way you designed the characters. It's a lot difference from how they looked in the actual musical, and I love it for that. :)
The metaphor of popularity being a lifeboat is very fitting, because not only does it convey desperation and danger (of ostracism and bullying or just being insignificant) that makes the people in it willing to push others out to “survive”, only preserving their social life instead of their real one, but what’s another way to lose popularity? Defying the status quo and behaving unexpectedly; that is, rocking the boat.
This really says a lot about our society, nobody cares about helping anymore, it’s all about themselves, mrs flemming holding Veronica and JD back form helping just so she could get the camera footage. The detail in this is amazing

I think it's super interesting that you gave Mac short hair and made Chandler the "captain" that Mac talks abt. most ppl (including me) interpret it as the boat being currently living ppl so the captain is Duke. this was super cool and interesting and the use of shadows and aaaaaa I loved it

Personally, I love chubby Heather. It makes her seem bubbly and friendly, compared to the other heathers which is somewhat accurate, and it really fits her well. No one ever said you need to be thin to be a cheerleader, you just can't be on "My 500lb Life"
I love how at 1:42 you put JD right behind Veronica. They were both trying to stop her but Fleming was stopping them. When you go back to the song 17 in the beginning he said “when every asshole is dead.” Heather M is nice. Even you could see he didn’t want her dead. Sorry for the long comment.
I relate to McNamara so much through the lyrics but never before through anything else, this animatic and how she was drawn makes me love her even more that we're connected through more than sad thoughts.
This is the best Lifeboat animatic I've seen so far, I love that it doesn't focus on the lifeboat during the full duration of the video but it also pictures the feelings that HMcN experiences.
I did a lifeboat animatic too and I can really see all the hard work you put into this. Between drawing all those frames and editing it and the moving floaty magic stuff and the backgrounds, even up to the facial expressions, you put so much effort into this. I greatly respect you for this because not one frame was longer than 3 seconds and the entire thing is around 2 minutes. People don't get how hard it is to make this kinda stuff and you've blown me away with your work.
I love how you have Ms Fleming stop Veronica from trying to help Heather Mac' Ms Fleming seems to be exploiting the students' confession of pain to the media, believing this could help them, but in reality, she's only patronizing Mac and her suicide plan, making her feel worse, while Duke and the student body will soon mock her for it 😔

Omg I loved this symbolism the lifeboat is the popular kids and in the end she leaves the popular kids and joins Veronica in the sea of normal people I also love the chubby heather all the popular at my school are mostly chubby too
0:15 the fact Veronica tries to reach out but ms Fleming blocks her with an EXCITED and ANTICIPATING expression is just another reflection of how ms.Fleming never actually cared about the kids, their Suicides were just convenient for her in some way, but the point is, she didn’t actually care about them, she just wanted the suicides to get sympathy, or whatever she’s trying to get in ‘Shine a Light’. She makes a big deal and puts on a parade. Again, I don’t know WHY exactly she does this, but ti’s not because she cares. Another thing that someone pointed out, was that in ‘Beautiful’ she noticed one of her STUDENTS were THROWING UP (Heather Duke) because of THEIR SCHOOL’S shitty food, or even just throwing up in general. You’d think she’d do something about it, but no. All she cared about was trying to give them detention. But Veronica interrupted with the hall passes, and she probably didn’t like that, so I also think it could be a bit of a reflection on how she wants to stop Veronica from interfering with her ‘fantasies’ Another theory, ms. Fleming has delusional fantasies about how suicide brings the world together, so the more suicides the better! If she cared more about these fantaises, she could have actually been the main antagonist. Welp, thanks for listening to my Ted talk
This is definitely the most powerful animatic of Lifeboat I've seen. It really demonstrates how Mrs. Fleming is really blind to Heather's pain and the expressions are so real. And that last scene... Wow. Just wow. That really hit me.

Oml this animation really got the message, I love that it's recording, I live the teachers expression, I love Veronica and JD and I really like how it's just so deep, the "double personalities" and that how it really let's you understand that the life of a popular person might not be that easy. Before this musical I just thought popular bad guys/girls (I mean that person that believes it's the best, or maybe that is so powerful and everyone follows and you don't get why u get what I mean?) Yup so I thought their life was easy but this made me realize that maybe not.
I can't even with this animatic, it's too beautiful and perfect. I've had this on loop for who know how long and it'll probably stay like that until Hamilton Aires tomarrow
the song in general was what got my attention for this tbh its just really pretty but depressing at the same time like you can clearly tell its sand but the music just slaps
I love this song and animatic. This song explains my whole life, including Shine a light (reprise). This reason for lifeboat/Shine a Light (Reprise) because I was a part of a group of these people who were good kids when we were young. As that group went down in size and grew up everything went wrong. The guy leader of the group and his Best Friend (which is a girl) has gone through some stuff with their family but never expressed it. But all they did was tell people to go kill themselves. The twins of the group, one of them left and the other stayed and cried every single day of her life, her parents are divorced and she has a fake boyfriend who makes her cry even though he “loves” her but she doesn’t want to break up with him because she will feel bad, she left the group. The quiet one left but now she is always alone. And me, the depressed and anxious one. I left that group and became friends with one of the most nicest guy in the world. I left that group because I was told to go kill myself, “i don’t deserve to live”, “i should just give up”, and “just run away and die.” So I ran to the most quietest and private place to go kill myself. But that nice guy came after me and as soon as I was about to put those pills in my mouth. He pushed me and saved me and gave me a whole speech about how life is hard and we will all have struggles and we shouldn’t give up no matter what, and I will never forget that day. I left that group, I felt happier. Free. God. This made me cry while writing this. I hope if anyone is stuck in bad group just leave. Find someone who can help you. Stay with you. Find someone who will love you as a friend or as a lover. Just never give up.

Duke's face throughout the whole thing just makes me wanna [punches fist] How you drew the transition between somber to terrified was absolutely awesome The way the red scratched versions of Duke and others reach for Heather. Loved it. That massive wave genuinely scared me The lightning. Enough said. How desperate Heather looked at times Heather being engulfed in darkness at the end killed me. This was amazing. I didn't realize this song could get any more heartbreaking. I love all of the symbolism in this animatic EDIT: While this is beautiful overall, it's really the details that pull it together. Like how the black sludge pulled from the water turns into the pulls, and how the others on the lifeboat go from highlighted in white to highlighted in red.
this is the most gorgeous animatic I have seen! all your animatics are amazing but this one really connected with me. the symbolism of heather duke and heather chandler coming together and how heather chandler is holding her hand as she goes over the edge really fits in with the next part, where Veronica is talking to heather chandler and the teacher saying "you promised you'd protect her!" which is something beautiful. honestly this animatic is absolute beauty and I love it so much

This was hella cool! Keep up the good work! CONSTRUCTIVE CRITICISM: for the tempo of the song, you had a few too many cuts. It works well after 0:38 (fits more with the chaos), but IMHO, it's less effective early on. It'd be neat to see a longer shot of her being recorded in the camcorder with Ms. Fleming watching, kinda like the opening of American Beauty. I think Heathers and that movie have some common themes/images, so it wouldn't be too bad to use AB for some inspiration ;)

Wow, thanks! The movie's on Netflix, but you could... um... borrow it from the Internet if needed. It's really interesting, and a lot of stuff in it ties in with Heathers (80s-90s, teen angst, teen sex, authority, murder, characters getting really nervous, suburbia, good music...).
