Lifted Avalanche Offroader Tow Rig Gets a Transmission Cooler

I've been needing to add a transmission cooler to my 2004 Chevy Avalanche, and since I lifted it and put it on 35's, it's even more imperative that I put a transmission cooler on it to try to prolong the 4l60e's life. I went with a Derale 8000 Plate-Fin style cooler.

I have an Avalanche and was talking to a transmission tech about this recently. Apparently the trans cooler in the rad is more to get it up to operating temp faster. It's really a trans heater. He warned that I could have too much cooling with a towing aftermarket cooler in winter, particularly right after start up. He suggested to not bypass the rad and put the trans cooler before the rad in the flow.

That’s kinda what I was thinking about not completely bypassing the radiator. Figured it would help heat it up some when it was cold. Thanks for the insight!

This was an essential mod on my automatic JK, made a huge difference.... that and washing the fins of my radiator often.

harbor freight sells a good nut insert kit for $22.00. i have used it numerous times it really is indispensable. the only down side is they don’t sell extra nutserts separate. you have to get extras from the hardware store or on amazon.

Actually this is not true if it’s too cool you will damage your clutches you use both coolers because the one in the rad regulates the temperature but the extra cooler is there to help keep it cool in extreme conditions unless you are racing do not bypass your original cooler

I screwed up and did it right before winter and haven’t been on any long trips. Not able to get a good temperature to report back just yet

how much fluid did you add?
@dougontheotherchannel3078
@dougontheotherchannel3078 4 года назад
I always run through the rad first as it will preheat your trans fluid in the winter which is a must. Plus then you end up with a BIT more fluid in the system which is not a bad thing

Yea that all made sense which is why I did it too
