In today's episode, Dave and I load (2) cargo loaders weighing approximately 67,000lbs each. Dave is in our 75ton rotator, Big Flipper while I operate Hulk, my 2020 50ton rotator. We are joined by Statewide Towing's Landolls for the actual transport of the cargo loaders.
We frequently do these lifts at not only LAX, but Long Beach Airport, Ontario Airport and even San Diego Airport. I normally don't record these because they are so common to me, but I always enjoy lifting these heavier ones and decided to show you guys this one to demonstrate the importance of proper truck placement and rigging. You can quickly see how one side can jump from a couple hundred pounds to over 26,000lbs in a matter of seconds.
►All footage was shot with my GoPro Hero 9/GoPro 9. My company logo and intro/outro graphics were created by / sa.creations
►I purchase my rigging equipment from: baileystowingi...

As you saw, the unit weighs almsot 70,000lbs. My lines are rated at 30,000 each in Hulk with a snatchblock. Off the side I would not be able to do it, it would be past my tip limit. I'd have to back up to it, and even then I would be pushing it hardcore. Flipper could do it easier but still I'd be pushing it. Then how would I move it inch by inch on each individual corner to put it on the Landoll to their liking.

Even though I never did heavy duty towing, I do find it very interesting. Minor point, you say the GVW of the loaders is 67,000. I believe that is the combined weight rating for the loader and it's load, not the empty weight.

I got to play with a load cell when I was picking up a larger hilift forklift off a jobsite recently with my tilt tray, which was close to my trucks weight limits anyway- it is actually an eyeopener just how close to our rigging limits we can be without even realizing it... it scared me enough to invest in some heavier rigging for these jobs- I was using my standard chains and shackles to do a sling to the two lift points to tow it on (dead motor)- which were 4x the machines weight- tons of excess right???- yeah- right up until I was winching up, and the back wheels hit a dip in the ground- which gave a brief spike twice the max ratings on my chains and shackles... only for less than a second and still under the theoretic max before breakage- but far less 'headroom' than I thought I had.... I'd love one to put on there permanently after seeing that one time just how much more 'shock loads' can add to a pull.... maybe when I get a few spare $$$ I will invest in one...
@PepesTowingService
@PepesTowingService 3 года назад
That's exactly why I got mine, it's a real eye opener isn't it? Crazy how easily you can over load your equipment within seconds and never realize it. That's why guys doing heavy roll overs without snatch blocks or 1/2" chain scare me. I make sure to always over rig and do my best to be within my safe working load limits
@steved2136
@steved2136 3 года назад
@@PepesTowingService I been running tilttrays here in Australia since about 2014, and I always 'overig' which is why I suspect I haven't had issues- but it seems that my 'over rigging' gave me far less headroom than I thought I had (and makes me wonder about how close the guys who laughed at my 'overigging' are coming to having a major hurt one of these days....) The mob I had to pick up the hilifter from had just got this loadcell and were keen to try it on anything that moved (and a few things that didn't lol)- boys with a new toy LOL- shows all sorts of stuff right on your phone- max peaks, average pull, very illuminating exactly what and where the loads fought.... not always where you expect the high points to be...

More towing companies need to switch to straps. Not only just the strength of the strap, but the weight savings on your unit compared to the weight of chains. Hulk and Big Flipper looking good. Be safe to all of your crews.
@PepesTowingService
@PepesTowingService 3 года назад
While I do love straps, the absolute least compelling factor is weight savings. These trucks weigh every bit over 60,000lbs, eliminating chains would net zero difference

Say you have a sling lifting a box. Put one end of the sling on your boom, and another in the top middle of the box and lift. That's a vertical. @PepesTowingService
@PepesTowingService 3 года назад
You always want the load in the throat of your snatch block. Putting multiple straps in your block doesn't allow this, they go to one side or overlap. Also, have you ever felt the inside of a snatch block? It's not smooth. Going to a shackle protects them. It's the proper way to do it, takes mere seconds to do. Everyone should do it this way

I seen on big flippers end of that, whatever the hell,, that thing is y'all are loading had what appeared to be steer tires possibly but where was any other types of wheels or rollers or whatever that machine moves on, on the hulks lifting end of it? Also what exactly is that machine designed to be used for around those airports and you may have said what it was used for but I just don't remember and it's fairly heavy at practically 70,000 lb.... We run triaxial tractor trailers out here on the east coast and Haul bridge beams up to 128 ft long with remote control five axle and 6 axle steerable dollys and those beans are heavy as hell too for having a styrofoam core and piles and piles of crisscrossed rebar inside of them some grade 8 some pot metal but they vary anywhere from 92,000 lb up to 231,000 pounds a piece

Answered this multiple times already, but because you always want the load in the throat of the snatchblock. Having a shackle allows this so the strap doesn't ride or when you connect two ends, they don't overlap or slide. Plus, have you ever felt the inside of a snatchblock? They are rough and not smooth. You missed the entire point of using two trucks. I've done these with big flipper solo, that's a 75ton. But what happens when you want to literally scoot just one corner over inches? It's a lot more difficult with one truck married to it. Two trucks has 100% full control on each corner to get these loaded pin point precise. I'm not sure what your point with containers is. When you load cargo loaders on trailers, you have to be insanely precise for weight reasons on their axles and because they are over width. Uprighting a container is completely irrelevant, I'm confused why mention that. I've done, and uploaded, plenty of heavy lift jobs where I only used one truck. I've lifted over 80,000lbs with big flipper like nothing alone. I literally have a video I uploaded where I did a tractor trailer rollover with just big flipper alone.
