Light but powerful electric outboard motor review | Thrustme Kicker 1kW unboxing and test | MBY

** While filming this review I made the unforgivable mistake of forgetting to attach the kill cord. Although it's only a small motor used in calm conditions, kill cords should always be worn. I apologise unreservedly for this oversight - Hugo **
We’re big fans of small electric outboards on tenders. They are so much cleaner, quieter, easier to store and less hassle to use than a petrol one. Priced at £1,250 (inc. VAT), the Thrustme Kicker is £400 cheaper than an ePropulsion Spirit 1.0 Plus and over £750 cheaper than a Torqeedo 1103C.
But perhaps the bigger surprise is how little it weighs, just 4.4kg including the battery, compared to 19.3kg for the Spirit and 17.3kg for the Torqeedo.
It’s not an entirely fair comparison because although the Thrustme Kicker features a similarly powerful 1kW motor, its built-in battery is only rated at 259kWh compared to 915Wh for the Torqeedo and 1,276Wh for the ePropulsion so it won’t last as long at full power (30 minutes is the claim).
Motor Boat & Yachting editor Hugo Andreae borrowed a 1kW Thrustme Kicker for a week over the summer to get a proper feel for what this electric outboard can do.

Two years later this motor is going strong ru-vid.comUgkxBZWgzfpS2Jj7JqIHyaSZjyVHNUgCKCBf Just uploaded a video of it after 2 years. We use it probably a dozen days each year on our small raft.-original review- We got this motor the other day and tested it out. I don't have anything to compare it to, but it seems good to me. It has all the features advertised - the motor housing is metal. We will see how it performs longer term and I will revise this review if needed. Some initial observations:- Good thrust, moves our boat around really well- It comes with a circuit breaker but no switch - so there's no way to kill the motor other than yanking the connection off the battery. I installed an inline switch.- The mount bracket is plastic and I worry it might break- There are a number of plastic parts that I worry about, but the most important ones are metal or some kind of composite

Hugo,I'm a retired boating-magazine editor here in the States, and I think you did a SUPERB job with this review. It's thorough, clear, useful. And you point out both the advantages and the drawbacks of the "Thrust-me." (What WAS their marketing director thinking?!?) This motor is light enough to "pack in" to remote lakes and rivers, which puts it alone in the increasingly competitive field of electric outboards. Thanks so much for your efforts, Chris

They need to make this so you can attach a 12v battery to it. The internal battery is way too small, I think this would probably be something I'd buy if I could attach it to my LiFePo4 12v battery.
@targetaps
@targetaps 2 года назад
Right? This would be awesome if it had the option for an external battery.
@marcrodriguez2884
@marcrodriguez2884 2 года назад
To be realistic an external battery would need to be 24 to 48 volts. At 12.8 (nominal LiFePO4) you’re pulling 80 amps at full power. That’s some heavy wires needed. Not practical.
@infesting
@infesting 2 года назад
Would not work. This is not 12 volts. You would need multiple battetys
@phillipjacobson4457
@phillipjacobson4457 2 года назад
Higher voltage = less amperage flow thru wires. A plug out the side of the unit so a person can hook in a extra battery pack is acceptable. A person can build a lithium ion pack of there own based on system voltage, and amp hours of run time, that is sized by the owners needs. The company can also sell extra battery kit . Remote control steering servo would be a great addition.

If I had one of these on a larger tender I would probably make a removable clamp on tie rod system. This would keep the light weight setup of it but would give more overall torque (lbs of thrust) to help move more weight. The props can still only turn a certain speed but it would help get the increased weight to that top speed better. Looks like a really promising product

Great little motor. I just bought one...People need to understand it is designed to be used for short trips, lightweight. It is not designed to be used for crossing the Atlantic! Yes you can have external battery to increase range etc, but you start defeating the object of the device in the first place if you need 10kg of external battery! As with all electric propulsion range is massively increased by using less power, but it takes longer to get anywhere!
@AndysEastCoastAdventures
@AndysEastCoastAdventures Год назад
I think 1 or 2 on the speed setting is rowing speed so more than ample for a small tender. I love this motor, been looking at getting an electric outboard and this fits my needs perfectly. Need it for 2 man tender plus could use on my kayak too. The fact that it's made by a Norwegian company also gives confidence this is going to be a reliable motor.

Nice little motor. thanks for the review. I think if the make some adjustments to some things like being able to attach an external solar charger to it and make bigger versions it would do well over here in America depending on the price point. It would have to compete with Brands like Minn Kota. The very first upside I see to it is you don't have to take a big battery with you. The first down side I see for using/selling it over here is the emergency kill cord. If you're moving around a 12 or 16 foot Jon boat(or similar) as you fish you wouldn't want it to disconnect. Most people in America would use it for trolling as they fish in rivers and the bays. The prop. being protected like that will help too. Of course all of this would depend on power to price ratio.

They've compared it to the high end (Torqueedo) but not to the low end: I can get a 1hp (about 70 lb. thrust) brushless Haswing that weighs only 14 lbs. (6.3kg) and 30ah lithium battery that weighs only 7 lbs. (3kg) for total of around $500 -- vs. $1600 USD for the Kicker. Only advantage I see is stuffing the Kicker in a paddleboard backpack for remote hiking/paddling. Otherwise, you're paying nearly 3x the money for a lot less power and range. And without a folding tiller, it would be difficult to fully tilt out of water on my low paddleboard or some kayaks.

NO - it most certainly is not correct - a 980kWh battery would be amazing to have on a boat - on a house it would power a house for 3 months without being recharged (I think you meant 980Wh - just less than 1kWh !)

I dont like that the battery is integrated. Batteries die after a couple years and its a waste to throw away the entire motor when that will inevitably happen. And what if you loose or break the remote? Having no way to controll the speed directly on the unit is another thing that makes no sense in my mind.

@tinderboxcreations
@tinderboxcreations 2 года назад
It's a neat design. However, having to rely on the fixed battery pack with no option for external packs to create a bank and therefore increase range, really let's it down. But, I suspect future models may provide this option. A nice wee motor despite that. I use a Haswing Protruar 2hp brushless motor to push a 13ft GRP old 60's speed boat (now a slow cruiser) and it's no noisier than the Kicker but it is heavier. The motor itself sits submerged behind the prop' so is kept cool and I run it on 4 x 100ah AGM batteries. A fair bit of wight to be carrying around I'll admit but the run-time at half power is around 7 hours. Also, I have 450w of solar charging those batteries so on a sunny day the range is practically infinite with clear weather. So, for me, the Kicker looses out but It's a lovely design and I'll be taking not e of this Swedish company for future models.

I suppose it is caused by the very small propeller although it's a ducted fan construction (per se quite interesting; the only one, as far as I can see, used with electric outboards).

just pointing your camera at the motor with no shoreline reference there is no way to tell how fast you are going. try using the GPS on your phone to give speed

Wait... so it's a glorified trolling motor, except way more expensive, weaker, shorter range and and can't just hook up a good battery. Why would anyone buy this?

I know, I am deeply embarrassed about that as you can tell from my apology in the description. Just goes to show that we are all fallible and why I am such a champion of wireless kill cords that you can’t forget like the CoastKey and Olas Guardian systems.

I've watched the video several times now, are you sure that the motor is at the top, I could not see any shaft attachment to the prop, is the motor inside the prop hub?
@MotorBoatYachting
@MotorBoatYachting 2 года назад
No, the motor is at the bottom in the propeller hub as you rightly surmised. I don't think I ever said it was at the top but forgive me if I did

@@MotorBoatYachting You actually say "the head of the motor is up here" while pointing at it in the first 30 seconds of the video :)

The transom pivot bracket is poorly designed as was well pointed out in the video. 3 or 4 major flaws and or clearance problems. Hopefully they will develop that and other lacking features.

Like every manufacture today they always try to limit you so you always wind up coming back to that company. Here is the battery why the fu$% would you put a built-in battery? There are so many options other than built-in battery.
