This has got to be one of the slickest fly tying tricks I have seen in over 50 years of fly tying and fishing! For a long time I used zap a gap on the thread in loo of a whip finish! This is the way to go, Most of our hatches that a light cahill would match occur late in the afternoon and into the evening I would think a bright orange post would work well for those low light hard to see times or in the foam lines!

Thank you so much for all these wonderful videos and techniques. I just started fly tying last year and I always look forward to seeing them and learning to be a better tier from them.

You are killing me! I just got efficient at your technique of whip finishing on the post, now you come up with this?! You are a wild man. Good stuff as always!

Alan Rohloff You can never have too many tricks Alan. Besides, I'm inherently lazy and tend to lose a lot of flies and anything to produce more flies quicker works for me. Tightlines.

I have used the "traditional" parachute wraps, but I wrap my post and Hackle together going up, apply a small amount of loons UV thick, wrap back down and whip finishing on the post itself. Then cure the UV. Makes a clean under profile, yet a very strong post.

Awesome technique! It was worth the 7+ min of drum machine to learn this...

Fantastic tying demo. I've been between buying the Bondic and the Loon, but after seeing the last few videos, I think I'll give the Bondic a shot. Bondic seems to be a bit cheaper to on Amazon which is a plus 👍😁 Also, I'd like to put in a video request for a hopper pattern since the season will soon be upon us. Would love to see the ol' LeTort Hopper tied by you guys 👍 Cheers

I found this fascinating, I have all the materials including the whiting hackle gauge. My question is where exactly do you measure the hackle tip to on the gauge. If you have a video showing this could you guide me to it? Brilliant tuition. Alistair

Great tying method. How does this work for patterns like an Adams using 2 different color hackles?

The bondic doesn't make the fly heavy in the front? It looks great and will be watching over time to see if it yellows. Not that it will matter too much, the most durable fly doesn't last long. I like your gumption. You'll try and usually succeed where others fail to employ different techniques. I still don't use super glue to take the place of the whip finish. I am sure the CCG could work with natural sunlight. Not trying it yet though. Bondic is expensive. I checked it out on Amazon and eBay nothing different. All the best, Sean

Sean Mooney The weight is still my biggest question and I really wish I knew. I mean, is the weight of two drops of cured Bondic greater than the weight of the thread used making two separate trips up and down the post followed by 4 to 5 turn whip finish and a drop of head cement, I just don't know. If anyone one out there has access to a really accurate scale...? The important part however is, if the fly is heavy does it affect the landing or floating performance and the answer is a resounding no. The pattern lands perfectly almost every cast and floats better than other parachutes I tie (my guess is the surface tension from the wide splayed tails has a lot to do with this).

Are there any go to midge patterns that work well in the Midwest

Are you still using UV cure adhesive for parachute flies ?
@superiorflycompany8217

with the extra weight from the uv epoxy I wonder how well it floats.
@tightlinevideo
@tightlinevideo 8 лет назад
+Superior Fly Company The pattern floats exceptionally particularly with the splayed tails. Just think about how much two tiny drops of glue weigh as compared to the amount of thread used to create a traditional parachute post fly. First you make multiple touching wraps up to post the wing and then back down. Then up the post again to lash the hackle to it. Then more wraps down to the base of the post. Follow this with a 4-5 turn whip finish at the end, and that's a lot of wraps. It would be rather interesting to see which actually weighs more, but I think you would need a very accurate balance to do so. Something that measures in .001ths of a gram.

when you say that bug bond and loon " sort of worked " what exactly was the problem with these products? Did the hackle pull away from the post because they were too soft? Reason for asking is that I have loads of bug bond and was hoping that it would work..........
@tightlinevideo
@tightlinevideo 9 лет назад
William McGuire For me anyway, the Bug Bond didn't make the post stiff enough. With it, to wrap the hackle I still had to hold the post up with one hand and wrap with the other, you know, that kind of juggling act you have to do. With the Bondic, the post is stiff enough that you simple wrap the hackle around it.
@williammcguire3426
@williammcguire3426 9 лет назад
tightlinevideo I wonder if a spot of superglue or zap a gap at the base of the post, then a twist, then bug bond over that would work. Going to try that and see what happens. Anyway up, keep sharing these wonderful new techniques!!! You do us all a great service when you do and I for one really look forward to your new posts.....

Ken Martin It's a new product called Bondic. To me, it dries harder and more tack free than other similar products.

@tightlinevideo
@tightlinevideo 9 лет назад
jasonflyfishercolorado fortcollins I haven't tried it with CCG. Bug Bond and Loon sort of worked, but not as well as the Bondic which is much harder and less flexible (it's actually sandable). In fact, I tried the process with those products almost 2 years ago and wasn't satisfied with the results and just gave up on the idea. When I got the Bondic about a month ago, I figured what the heck and gave it a shot. It worked like a champ on the very first attempt. I'm trying my best not to overuse the stuff (although it has appeared in the last 3 flies) but it just works so well for so many things.
