Excellent demonstration. It seems like the REIN and PLHv2 both offer good balance of throw and spill, with the user's preference of color temperature being the deciding factor. They both show how far we've come from the 600DF which isn't even that old. I hope your daughter got something for being so patient with all those tests!

Like the color better than the modlite and its got a really good amount of throw with what appears to be the kind of spill that I would like in a weapon light. The CD’s warmer light has a more natural, true to color on everything it shines on as well as a defined detail. It also punches through photonic barriers better. The main reason I bought the Rein. For situational awareness the Surefire dual fuel wins so I bought that too and since I’ll shoot my Scar 17 in 6.5 Creedmore on a bipod I’m not concerned with weight and actually helps recoil. I also decided on the Rein to withstand the forward and rearward recoil impulse of the heavy Scar bolt carrier.

@thepewplace1370
@thepewplace1370 3 года назад
I would recommend against it: I took my M600DF head off my carbine and turned it into a handheld: it's just got way too much flood and not enough hot spot for a WML. My pistol light has a better hot spot than it. The M600DF is really good at lighting the area around the shooter up, which is not ideal for obvious reasons.

Great video! The REIN and OWL feel like the middle ground between the stupidly focused modlite and the spill of the Surefire. Will probably be checking one of these out on my next build. It's hard to say though if I would prefer it over the Surefire since the Surefire offers a broader situational awareness. That said the Surefire can get lost in adverse weather like fog.

As a huge fan & owner of Streamlights, SureFires & Clouds, I personally like the wider beam pattern of the SureFire. Yes the Cloud Rein 2.0 is cockdiesel & unbreakable. And the ProTac HLX is hard to beat at 1000 lumens/27,000 candela for $100-125. But for me a WML must excel both in & outdoors & the Clouds & ModLites are just too bright FOR ME indoors. I find balance to be crucial. Just my humble 2¢ as light choice is personal. Most important thing is simply having a reputable, high quality WML on your firearm period. If I were on a 2 way range, I’d go for something like the SureFire on my carbine and then have a handheld ModLite if I needed that crazy hella long beam throw with the super tight, concentrated hot spot to identify whatever at extreme distance. But I’m willing to bet that if the SureFires get the job done for SoecOps (and Streamlight for most LE) then they would for all of us Modern-day Minutemen.

Seems that the surefire still has the best for situational awareness, good wide spill. While the cloud and modlite reaches out further with a more direct or tight beam pattern, but at a cost. The beams go far but you would have to scan left and right a bit more while the surefire and even the streamlight offer a good wide field of view. Very good comparison video. If the Cloud Defensive Rein 2.0 was dual-fuel powered & had a half power toggle for indoor use, it would easily be the best WML ever made (IMO). The only 2 downsides to the Rein are the required use of rechargeable batteries (not optimum for extended, multiple day use in the field) & spitting out 1200+ lumens & 60,000+ candela for indoor use. I find anything brighter than an HL-X or TLR1-HL indoors (both 1000 lumens & 20,000+ candela) affects my eyes with the splash off walls/doors/appliances/etc… That’s why I like the Streamlight TLR9 and RM2 these days for specific defensive/indoor setups. They’re both 1000 lumens, have 10,000 candela, and have a different beam pattern (in a good way) to the “HL” Streamlight beam used in the HL-X & TLR1-HL. Hard to describe it but it maintains the intensity of the HL beam while enlarging the hot spot and getting rid of a lot of the unnecessary spill width from the HL lights. The TLR9 & RM2 are both rated to have a 200m throw but I find their beam pattern to actually be more favorable at distance over the HL’s despite having less candela & throw distance. It’s their different beam pattern that achieves this (again, my opinion only). Yes candela, lumens, & throw distance are super important but I find beam pattern to be as important if not more so than them. The TLR9 & RM2 seem to throw just as well/far as the HLX/TLR1-HL even though they have 10,000 less candela and are rated at 200m vs 300m. What’s the point of my nerdy WML rambling? Lumens, candela, and throw ratings (on the box) don’t mean much as much as ppl think from my experience. Lights are all unique tools that need to be experienced by the end user. Numbers on a box are no substitute for real world testing. I can’t explain how a light with thousands less candela & throw rating seems to outperform one with more. But it does. Like all firearms and firearm accessories, they must be tested in person to confirm or deny quality. Doesn’t matter what X company or Y influencer says. That’s why I love to try/test different gear. Ok. Essay over. And for all my fellow WML nerds, I highly recommend the Streamlight TLR9 for duty size pistols & the RM2 for any carbine/long gun. The TLR9 has become my go to on Glock 34’s, Q5 Match’s, full size Beretta’s/CZ’s/Sig’s, 5” 1911’s, etc over the TLR1-HL’s (longer, better switch, smaller W+H, fit better in all Safariland holsters, batteries in/out the bezel, etc). 👊🏼🗽⚔️

Very informative. No real winner for me as they are all good at various distances. At greater distances I think I'd go with the Cloud Defensive REIN, but overall shorter distances, the Surefire M600DF. I'm looking for a light to use with a Steyr AUG. It has some reliability issues (weak battery spring), whereas the Cloud and Modlites are hard use items that will work when you need them to. The HLX is a decent budget entry, but if you actually use your rifles at night, there is no substitute for Cloud Defensive or Modlite. This video shows a great comparison in pure darkness, but night time is rarely pure dark: the high candela numbers from the Modlites and CDs are able to overcome most photonic barriers: the HLX not so much. Also, the intensity difference means you can effectively remove someone's vision temporarily at cqb distances with the high candela of Modlite/CD. The M600DF and HLX can only do this at extremely close range.

has a ton of spill. as someone who ran it in several shoot houses, the problems you run into are trying to put light from one room to another and anytime there are environmental factors (rain, snow, lots of pollen, dust, carbon from shooting, ambient light (photons fighting photons) or shooting outside when it’s cold and the hot gases make a cloud) eat up those Lumens hard and make it very difficult to PID.

Do one over the mounts they have. I dont know what mount to get for my rein.

I have a video going over mounting it with an Arisaka. I’m using their mounts currently. Will be doing a video covering their 2 most popular options.

Modlight’s beam is so narrow. I went with a Rein.

The OKW is narrow, the PLHv2 is a good cross between hotspot and enough flood to work indoors. It's what I use on my cqb rifle at work, although I'm going to pick up a REIN and see how it compares in real world. The warmer tone of the CD light makes colors more visible to the eye.

I have the OWL, Rein and Micro. The Reins are legit, but, the mounting brackets are so weak and have damaged my rail. The OWL is solid in every regard. I don’t know what I’m going to do with the two brand new Rein lights.

Can you give more detail? The picatinny mount for the light body, or the remote, or the "Torrent" mlok pieces?

Nice to see a good comparison of the top 5. The modlites aren't that blue, but like you said, the camera can make you see what it wants. Any plans on a video covering the performance past 100 yards?

@@nbates9893 that's the awesome thing about the modlites and rein. Indoors they're a flood flight and outside they can perform as more of a thrower compared to the surefires. Why anyone would want a light for one scenario when a different light can accomplish that scenario and many more, idk
