Light in August: a novel about race, gender, and alienation set during the 1930s in the Deep South.
This one is for the fans of literary modernism and Southern Gothic. Light in August might be one of the most accessible novels by Faulkner I have read, but it didn't work for me one hundred percent.

I adore Faulkner and intend to read all of his work. I've read Sound and Fury and it was really a challenge. I find it extremely interesting how Faulkner talks about the American the South in US and I, as a Brazilian, like these differences between South and North, much because of colonization is fascinating.

There is also a review of The Sound and the Fury on my channel. Faulkner is a fascinating and challenging author!

I think Faulkner's relevance is in helping us, as Americans, see where we came from, what we went through, and why certain things linger.

Thank you so much for this very thoughtful and even-handed analysis/review. I am getting ready to read LIA very soon. I am just finishing a very unique novella called The Spectre of Alexander Wolf--this has one of the most unique plots I have ever encountered--check it out if you have not already😊 I am looking forward to LIA as I have heard it is more accessible--like you, I feel the modernist experimentation is best in smaller doses. I just want to reiterate one reason I like your channel so much is the very balanced approach you have toward authors who may be "problematic" for many other reviewers. I am also looking forward to The Magus, one of my favorite novels--I may read it again. P.S. love the views of Tenirife--it reminds me so much of Southwest Florida at least in much of the foliage and trees--and hot sun! I know it is quite a different land though, as we are here in a swampy savanna. I need to catch up on your vids, have been away for a bit!

I'm so glad you enjoyed this review! It is my third review of a book by Faulkner. If you search my channel, you'll also find reviews of As I Lay Dying and The Sound and The Fury. About Tenerife, our weather is more like that of Southern California than Florida because it is quite dry, mostly this time of year. The island as a whole is not as green as lush as my local park might suggest!

@@JuanReads I will check out the other reviews of Faulkner. I started LIA and I actually like it a lot. It seems to have a straightforward narrative and is fairly intriguing so far--so glad you included this for your list in August 😁 My friend went to Tenerife last year and it reminded me yes of the southwest here, as you say the more desert-like climate. She had photos of some very interesting trees and foliage that looked unlike anything I have seen elsewhere. Well it does look pretty lush at least in some areas--yes Florida is more like Cambodia...🥵 I am happy if I can get the humidity down to 35%...

I both loved and hated the Magus, I thought it was brilliantly written and the suspense and eery atmosphere were done brilliantly but I found the ending a little confusing and anticlimactic. I had to research what the ending was about to fully appreciate it. It's a novel that still sits with me. Hope you enjoy it

Faulkner is one of my favorite writers yet it feels like he often doesn't value the reader's time or patience, almost like he wants to punish them. I think this is a reason he didn't receive much success initially. Ive noticed that modernist and post modernist writers in general seem to make things overly complicated and confusing just for the sake of it. almost like there is a belief that something straightforward cannot be profound.

Light in August was a big old "meh" for me. 😒 The southern gothic elements were sort of exaggerated I thought, lending at times an almost cartoonish air to things. I also thought that all the characters were really dumb, and the ending only reinforced that assessment. The writing veered between genuinely great and downright ridiculous, so it was an uneven experience sorta. I've still got a few Faulkner books on my shelf to read, but I've pretty much given up on getting much profundity out of them. Still, usually they're gnarly enough to at least finish reading. XD

I think I am going to take a break from Faulkner. Like you, there are still a few books by him I'd like to read but sometimes it is hard to muster the right amount of motivation to tackle Faulkner's modernist Southern Gothic.

What are you doing? You either talk about one book or a movement. I love Joyce and I love Faulkner. They have nothing in common that I can see.

Nothing at all. And Wolff isn't 1% the writer Faulkner is.
