Light Meter Apps in Low Light

A year ago I tested out several light meter apps from the IOS app store and found they worked fairly well, but each had their own user interface. This video looks at low light performance using the same phone as before, an iPhone 6, and a newer iPhone 12 to see if they can keep up with a traditional light meter.

I have used the iPhone meter (myLightmeterPro) with great success in pinhole photography with relatively long exposure times (1 sek - 30 sek). No physical meter would have been better. Since I have my iPhone with me at all times, I no longer use anything other than my iPhone. I have used other apps, but MyLightmeterPro is all I use now. Great app. Nice iPhone 12. I only have used the reflective functions. i like very much the 5 settings for different lenses. My only problem is when I get a new iPhone 16. Then I will have to check if their readings are properly correlated. I have only recently come across TheNakedPhotographer, and I find this to be the best youtube ever! I will contribute (to Patreon, I think I saw ...) shortly.

Very interesting. I recently shot a roll of hp5 in 120 in an industrial area after dark. I don't have an incident meter but my minolta spot meter was doing fine until I found a very dark scene where I couldn't get a reading from it (needed a flashlight to focus). I tried my nikon f80 with a 50mm 1.4 and it was also unable to read. So I downloaded a light meter app that gives a reflected reading from the rear facing camera and it gave me something like 20s at 2.8 before reciprocity correction. The negative (box speed in xtol 1:1) was perfect. I've got no idea what the meter weighting pattern is but I had the same shadow density on that frame as the rest of the roll when contact printed. Granted hp5 is a very forgiving film, but still. This was using Samsung galaxy s8 btw. Love your channel.

I also have a Galaxy S8 and use the same lightmeter app in this video- good results in Low Light. :)

Thanks for doing this! I use this app, and I shoot in lower light situations. Though I've had decent results, I've wondered how it would compare to a quality light meter.

Ok, I have that app in pro version, I would like to know if you have proceeded to make the right calibration on both phones. Thank you!

Where did you buy the spherical diffuser phone adapter? I’ve looked but I can’t find it anywhere

It’s called Luxi For All, but I don’t know if it’s still made

@@TheNakedPhotographer The author of MyLightmeterPro suggests using an old translucent film canister and a hobby knife. Maybe I will try one day, but right now I couldn't be bothered. I have thought about using something like the canister in a Phil Davis way, but film is also forgiving to simplicicity, I hope. I go for just the iPhone, and then learning to be correlated with it.

Do you need that little attachment for the phones? I have the app but i always thought it used the rear cameras and not the selfie cams?

Reflected metering uses the rear camera, incident uses the front facing camera. The dome averages the light for incident

What’s the product name for the dome? Can you share a link to find it?

This light meter gave accurate results on my Sony phone

The app gives a means to adjust the reading up or down to match a dedicated meter, but it keeps that adjustment through the entire range. My tests here showed that at the extreme low end, it may not be consistent
